Is Sweet Potato okay?

    Hi,
I cooked sweet potato for the first time last night and it was gorgeous. I cut it in wedges and roast it with a chopped red pepper and a chopped red onion. I used about a tablespoon of olive oil and some herb de province, black & cayenne pepper and some mixed herbs & spice.
I'd say the sweet potato was about 220g.

Roughly how many calories would this be? is it better than eating regular spuds?
I ate it with a roast chicken breast stuffed with Light Philidelphia Chive.
Overall is this a good dinner or is it a bit too high in calories and carbs?

    Thanks.

    D

sounds like a great dinner. Again depends entirely on your eating philosophy.

Mine being low carb, high protein/fat and loadsa fruit/veggies would say it sounds like a great dinner. I might suggest a full fat cheese and possibly one less processed (ricotta or mascarpone rock. not sure how processed they are). Otherwise loadsa protein + fat + vitamins sounds good to me!

    Edit:
As per your question- sweet potatoes in a reasonable quantity are a lot better than potatoes and full of good stuff.

sounds like a great dinner to me.. but where is the green veg? its hard to answer the calorie question because we dont know how many calories your aiming for and what your other meals consist of .. and yep sweet potato is a lot better than white potato imo..

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to lose some weight. I'm doing pretty good at the moment, I'm down over 2 stone but have another 3 or 4 to go.

    My current diet is...

Breakfast: 50 to 60g of porridge made with water and a little milk with dried fruit, cranberries or blueberries. Coffee with splenda.

Mid morning: 1 small slice of wholemeal bread with light cheese spread and tomato. Coffee with splenda.

Lunch: Tuna Salad or chicken salad or chicken & veg soup with brown bread.

Dinner: Big Fish/chicken salad or baked chicken with roast or steamed veg.

Snack: Danone yoghurt 90 cals. Tea with splenda.

    I'm cycling 3 times a week for 60 to 90 minutes.

I'm doing fairly well all week but I let my hair down a little at weekends.

Well done on the weight loss so far!!! You might need to change tactics to continue your progress.

My advice would be to work in a decent source of protein and fat with your breakfast. You might also consider dumping the bread and upping the tuna or meats to fill up your meals. Without meaning to sound miserable the yoghurt is probably sugar laden (depends on the type) so you could go for a higher fat lower sugar yoghurt (maybe greek w/ fruit mixed in???).

    Keep it up!

I thought I was doing okay with protein. Maybe I should have a boiled egg for breakfast too.
Is greek yoghurt not very high in cals?

You're generally doing really well and fair play for getting plenty of meat/fish and greens in throughout the day. Again my advice was only from an optimisation point of you. Really on this one your best friends are good fats and protein and its a good idea to have plenty of them with every meal- breakfast too!

To avoid hunger you could try and have two eggs with some fruit for breakfast. This would give you plenty of good fat, good protein and clean carbs.

I don't eat yoghurt myself but if I wanted a sweet yoghurty treat I'd be aiming for a low sugar option (which probably means higher fat). The less processed the better and just add a rake of stuff to it (like you do with your porridge).

That sounds so devine, I am definitly going to try that for my dinner some night. I too love sweet potato and it's good to hear that it's a bit healthier than the white variety. I normally just roast mine with garlic, so will be trying it with the pepper and onion :).
