Protein supplements???

    From wat i can see most people who are regular users of the gym seem to use some form of a protein supplement,does everyone need to use them?how much protein does a person need?i know thats a very vague question so basically if its just a supplement u shoulnt need it if u have a proper diet right?any thoughts wud be more than welcome!
    p.s.......i am new to the gym and learning as i go so sorry if the answer seems obvious to everyone else

    Depends what your goals are to be honest, so we will definitely need a bit more information from you re diet and physical aspirations before anyone can tell you what you should and shouldn't take.

    Short answer: the general guide line is 1g of protein per pound of lean mass (total weight minus bodyfat) for someone who is active (ie, regular in the gym). That's easy to get from food, but there is a window of 30-60 minutes after heavy lifting in the gym when an easily digested protein like whey will be diverted mainly to muscle repair, which is why whey is so popular with bodybuilders.

    Any protein will do the job there, it doesn't have to be whey, and the rest of the time, go for real food.

    As a general rule, the more restricted your calories, the more important it is to get enough protein.
