Start taking a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement daily.

I'm also quite fond of Cissus for joint problems.

Just on the prevention side, do you weight train frequently? and when was the last time you took a break?

Yeah supplements won't harm you but it sounds like you have tight shoulders and hips.
Nice to see the aggregated answer to all joint pain has reared its head nice and early though.

    Hey there,

I have suffered from tedonitis in my knee for a few years now. I have managed to maintain it using anti-inflammatories and Patellar Straps when it get really bad which is generally around this time of year. I play football and running on the harder ground doesn't do me any favours.

I've just done a a quick search about this Cissus stuff and its sound pretty amazing and seems like it is something I could really benefit from!

Any idea where I can buy this stuff in Dublin? Is it expensive?

I seriously doubt supplements are your answer, if your shoulder is grinding when benching you probably need to do some should mobility work.

What shoulder prehab are you doing at the moment?

The same goes for the hip.

while cissus is very good and will help heal and treat the symptoms it won’t treat the cause.
You can get it on www.myprotein.co.uk

totally agree - the supplements are a band aid approach at best

Thanks, there only real treatment for the cause is to stop the activity but I have no plans to do that! I can play on with the discomfort at the minute. If this helps to ease that in any way then it can't be all bad!!! :)

I think I remember someone on here saying they had some good videos on youtube or something for shoulder exercises and rehabilitation. Anyone remember this? I'd like to take a look as I've similar shoulder problems

Be very careful about that shoulder, especially the way you describe it as grinding, in the past I've done what you're talking about and pushed on through it for months with fairly heavy benching, in the end I made a complete mess of my shoulder. I didn't have any dramatic single incident or injury I just kept pushing on through moderate discomfort and as a result ended up with a near useless shoulder for the best part of a year.

No one can tell you for sure over boards but long term grinding would worry me in terms of damage to the labrum or cartilage, might be worth seeing a decent physio to give you some work to loosen the shoulder and make it move more freely. It could always be I'm projecting though as a result of having horrendously fragile shoulders myself :p .

    Thanks for the comments.

I've only noticed it recently and have taken a break from the gym.
I was due a week break next week as its week 7.

Ive never had this issue before and thought I was lacking some vitamin or mineral in my joints. Has the same issue has cropped up in my leg.

Will go see a physio if the problem persists.

What do you mean by shoulder & hip prehab?

I do very little back workouts. Only really use a t bar. A friend mentioned this can cause problems for shoulders too.

    Thanks again for the comments

I am guessing that'd be the route of your shoulder problems. You really need to make sure you're balancing out all of your pushing movements with pulling moverments. If I were you I'd back off benching for a few weeks and concentrate on pull ups, deadlifts, cabel rows etc.

Here are some good vids from Transform that I've found usefull.

No that wouldn't cut it either. If the answers are going to be "take fish oils, chondriton and stop benching" then I really think this thread should be closed like the other injury ones.

Report it and it probably will.
I'm pretty sure the mods will act on a report from you Barry.

I think if you put my 2 posts together my advice is: Start doing shoulder prehab/mobility work, supplements aren't the answer, cut back the benching for a while and work on pulling, balance your workout. Don't see anything wrong with that.

Hmmm, right yeah you're right my apologies. It's hard to follow a username through the thread.

However I stand by my original statement, bad advice in the main on this thread. Word to the wise for anyone concerned about injuries, by and large those with any expertise are far too busy to post here, so go and see a professional.

    Fair enough, no bother.

You're probably right, it's the same with most threads. Bad advice and good advice come in equal measures. I honestly think there should be some form of "roundtable of experts" thread with the "experts" being nominated at the start. I am thinking of the likes of yourself, Will, Transform, G'em etc., at least that way people wandering by might have some idea who to listen to.

Well to be honest I'd disagree with what Transform and G'em say a lot of the time but I'd keep that to myself on account of the fact that some of the arguments would be ideological (in the case of weightlifting with G'em for example) and because Transform, for example, makes his living from fitness and I wouldn't like to argue the toss on certain things when they wouldn't benefit anyone in the long run.

So probably the best bet would be a standard answer of "see an expert". I know that all 'experts' are not created equal (physio standards vary for example) but at least you're not going to get the following:

Poster A: I have some knee problems
Poster B: Do *insert physio exercise they've seen once here* and that'll sort you out

Poster A: I keep pulling my hamstring
Poster B: Stretch it more. Here's a video I've watched on stretching

Poster A: My hips seem to be sore after exercise
Poster B: Fish oil is the answer!

Poster A: I've lost my keys
poster B: Take fish oil, look at this video on stretching, do this exercise my physio gave me and isolated searching will do you no good man you need to do Starting Searching.

The grinding on your shoulder is not a good sign. Be careful as you can severely damage it. MY recommendation is to do Simple Stretches, Range Of Motion and Strength Exercises. This will greatly help in strengthening your shoulder muscles and keeping it well conditioned.

The problem def seems to be the fact the my chest was more developed than my back.

I took a week off then started doing a lot of t-bar, pull ups and im going to start doing presses next week.

Def feeling better after just focusing on back and taking a break from chest exercises.

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it.
