Sienna Miller has confirmed that she is to play Maid Marian opposite Russell Crowe’s Sheriff of Nottingham in the upcoming Robin Hood film. The actress told reporters, "It's happening. I just found out. It's the most exciting news in the world. It's ridiculous. But there's this looming actor's strike, so it's not 100% sure that it's going to be made, but it's looking pretty certain." Of working with Crowe, who won an Oscar for Gladiator, Sienna said it was "as good as it gets".

Honestly thought this was something messed up about Frank Miller.

    Who is playing Robin then?

Can't possibly top Alan Rickman in Prince of Thieves.

I thought that too, but alas, it was not to be. Disturbing though he'd be as Maid Marian, I reckon Frank would do more with the role than Miller would. ("What are you, dense? Are you retarded or something? I'm the GODDAMN Maid Marian!")

Christian Bale, Michael Fassbender, Jude Law, Gerard Butler and Hugh Dancy have all been mentioned to play Robin Hood but no one is cast yet

Christian Bale, soon to be seen as the caped crusader in The Dark Knight, is in talks about donning the jolly Lincoln Green outfit of Robin Hood, where he will be part of a menage a trois between Russell Crowe's Sheriff of Nottingham and Sienna Miller's Maid Marian.
Nothing is signed for Bale, but director Ridley Scott is exceedingly keen to cast him.

Costume fittings begin next week, so he'll be either in or out by then. Vanessa Redgrave and William Hurt are also in discussions about being in the film, which is called Nottingham.
Saoirse Ronan (who appeared with Vanessa in Joe Wright's award-winning film Atonement) will also be in the picture.

If all the casting comes off, it'll be a high-octane ensemble and Scott will be working with a big budget - good news for the British film industry.

I liked Bale in 3:10 to Yuma with Crowe

I'm kind of excited about this film. I think the whole idea could work out brilliantly (equally, it could fail miserably, but I prefer to be optimistic about it).

    Apparently so.

When I glanced at this thread I taught it said "Miller to play Iron Maiden". Now I'm disappointed :(

Nickolas Grace was better in the 80's tv show.

It'd be a good move for Bale to play Robin. If he could run this franchise in tandem with the Batman series then he'd be up there with Harrison Ford for StarWars/Indy. The advantage of playing two iconic heroes in parallel is that you avoid the risk of becoming synonymous for being either.

Plus he might be the only guy to play Batman AND Robin!

Russell Crowe is to play both of the main parts in Ridley Scott's interpretation of Robin Hood.

Previous movies have seen Kevin Costner and Erroll Flynn as the famous outlaw, while Alan Rickman has portrayed the Sheriff of Nottingham.

It was previously reported that Crowe will play the sheriff, with Sam Riley cast as Robin Hood.

However, Scott has now revealed that Crowe will take on both leading roles in Nottingham, saying: "He’s playing both! [It will be] a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes."

Crowe was recently rumoured to be in line to portray late US comedian Bill Hicks in an upcoming biopic.

Crowe as Hood and Sheriff and Sienna Miller has Marian

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

So, i wonder, is Crowe is playing 2 different distinct people?

Or is the Sheriff, in fact, Robin Hood in disguise? His 'superhero' disguise if you will.

The former would be particularly lame.

But the latter could be pretty good, esp if the real enemy is a Prince John / King Richard type played by Bale or someone.

    What do others think?

It is a role that traditionally lends itself to women on the thin side.
But after being hired to play Maid Marian in a forthcoming Robin Hood remake, Sienna Miller has now been dumped from the role.
The 26-year-old actress was reportedly too thin for the part and there were fears should would make co-star Russell Crowe look bad during some of the intimate scenes................................

    :D

I think all the press she is getting for being a homewrecker is not helping her career either

Alan Rickman was truly great in "Prince of Thieves", no question ("No more merciful beheadings, and cancel Christmas!") ;)

However I think Crowe might bring something different to the role - a more brutal Sheriff, perhaps.

(...or fighting and tug boats, who knows???!!! :D)

...seriously, though I think he'll be good in the role.

Crowe always seems to deliver when given his stage, really looking foward to this.
Master and Comander was the most bad ass film this decade.

Apparently reports on websites from "insiders" have said that Miller was dumped because of a falling out with Crowe. His infamous ego has apparently been rearing its head again, especially now playing two parts, which the idea is rumoured to have been put forward by Crowe himself.

Cate Blanchett or Samantha Morton would be a good choice for Marian now

The explanation I heard, for Miller's departure, was that Crowe is still "bulked up" from his last role, and the slender Miller looks silly standing next to him. Not sure how much weight I should give that explanation...

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Cate Blanchett has been linked to the role of Maid Marian opposite Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott's new film 'Nottingham'.
Speaking to the Telegraph, actor Mark Strong, who has been linked to the role of Sir Guy of Gisbourne, said: "I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part.
"She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it."
'Nottingham' is due out in 2010.

excellent choice if she comes on board

I prefer the wholesome curvature of Lucy Griffiths.

That said Blanchett is a much better actress than Miller.

Bereaved Vanessa Redgrave is concentrating on work following the tragic loss of her daughter Natasha Richardson - she has signed to star in Ridley Scott's 'Robin Hood' movie.

The acting great is set to play Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of the folklore hero's nemesis King John, played by Oscar Isaacs.

Redgrave will join Russell Crowe as Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett, who was drafted as Maid Marion after Sienna Miller dropped out.

It is the British actress' first major movie role since 2007's 'Atonement'.

The casting announcement comes just a week after the death of Redgrave's thespian daughter.

Natasha Richardson passed away on Wednesday after suffering a traumatic brain injury on the slopes Mont Tremblant in Montreal, Canada two days previously.

Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson, along with Natasha Richardson's widower Liam Neeson, laid the star's body to rest at St Peter's Episcopal Church in Millbrook, New York on Sunday.

another good casting choice with Blanchett

Teaser trailer out a few hours ago. Okay so the trailer isn't much to go by, and the music is a bit odd, but it's great to see Crowe bringing the pain again!

Maximus does Nottingham as it were!

Its kinda funny cos, if you didn't know it was a Robin Hood trailer at first, from the first frame you'd be thinking "wow .... its Gladiator 2: Die Harder ..... awesome! "

Looking forward to it anyway. Lots of good actors in this one.

Maximus, sure, but let's not forget Crowe's other great military leadership role: Jack Aubrey.

Rumours have it that there've been a lot of problems with production, various reshoots, etc. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe though - I have to hold out hope.

I'm not fully convinced yet, it really looks like Gladiator meets 300 meets Pathfinder IMO but time will tell, all of those films were epic so here's hoping!

Hopefully the film will be good and Ridley Scott will go off and start working on a sci-fi movie. He has been away from the genre for far too long.

I'm probably thinking about another film, but was this originally meant to be about the Sheriff of Nottingham and how he was actually the good guy in the story? I had thought it was this, but any information I find on it just seems to make it out as being a standard Robin Hood flick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

It is the same film as far as I'm know but it may have undergone some major rewrites since then. Film production was delayed several times so the story may have changed.

? Pathfinder is one of the most woefully awful, ocassionally funny films ever made.
Do you remember the avalanche scene near the end? *Shaky camer* "Wo no, Avalanche" *Cut to old national geographic footage of Avalanche*.

Terrible movie and not to be casually thrown in with Gladiator and 300!

In fairness, replacing Kevin Kostner in every scene with a cardboard cut-out of Nic Cage wouldn't make Prince of Thieves worse.
