Like it or not he's the main character and as such he's going to be in most of the episodes. It's hard to like The Simpsons without liking Homer.

Moe should get a spin off show.

I hate him in the new episodes. I hate all of them in the new episodes though.

The Simpsons has been **** since 1999.

    Homer included.

Did you always hate homer or is this a new thing? I can't stand this current season, SO MANY LISA episodes. Makes me think back to how terrible S19 was. I'll need a few more crap episodes in a row to make me stop watching; it's an addiction!

Homer is best when it's himself and Bart colluding in some way.

Lenny and Carl are where it's really at though.

The newer episodes seem fresher where they are centred around characters that don't get as much air time,

I liked the one with moe and teaching the husbands a lesson, the wiggan one where he becomes friends with homer was nice too

    It was something different to

    - Homer getting a new job
    - Homer + Family + Country = Lacklustre Shennanigans
    - Lisa trying to prove she's intelligent
    - Bart showing he's not really just a trouble maker
    - Bart learning a lesson
    - 1st 14 mins of the episode being completely different to the last 7 mins

I was saddened today to have watched a new sideshow bob episode.

saddened because despite not being the worse it suffered from 2 points.

first and practically, it has continued the bane of simpsons writing over these later years in that the solution is literally thrown out in the last 20 seconds out of the blue and wraps things up.

secondly and more importantly its a SIDESHOW BOB episode. These were the highlights of the simpsons, some of the best jokes and lines in the simpsons come from the episodes where its a crazy sideshow bob plot to kill bart/make money/take over springfield/stop all tv.

And this in comparison was a meh parody of face/off.

Though I was surprised that the last few episodes of the simpsons were better then its usual rubbish these days this really confirms that as hard as they try the glory days are just out of reach.

Homer is at his best when the story isn't about him, with lean in jokes and such.

This is just one example of thousands that made Homer a great character...
Marge: Have you noticed any change in Bart?
    Homer: New glasses?
Marge: Noooo... He looks like something maybe disturbing him
Homer: Probably misses his old glasses
Marge: We could get more involved in Bart's activities, but then I'd be afraid of smothering him
Homer: Yeah, and then we'd get the chair.
Marge: That's not what I meant!
Homer: It was Marge, admit it.

    Classic!

Homer is at his best when the story isn't about him, with lean in jokes and such.

Word. Although he has amazing main stories; sometimes he's just amazing coming in with quips; my favourite example is "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Marge" (Otto marries/doesn't marry Becky the "Usurper! Usurper!")

Becky's (at the altar, in a wedding dress) has just been dumped by Otto :
Homer: (whispering loudly) In about fifteen minutes, I'd take off that wedding dress, or you're gonna look crazy.

    ========

Marge: Becky, I know you must feel awful, but at least this didn't happen after you were married.

Homer: Yes, better now than when you're too old and fat to get another man.

Homer Simpson might just work in our public sector: You don’t like your job, you don’t strike. You go in every day and do it really half-assed. That’s the American way. :)

Don't know how you can't like him. They have made him very OTT in recent years but he still has his moments more consistently than any other of the family members, and in the mid-90s heyday he was arguably the best comedic character ever written.

They have turned him into a complete moron since 1999/2000, so stupid that it's not funny any more. And that sort of loud whispering thing they have him doing in nearly every episode since 1999 is so irritating. Anyway like someone else said every character has become annoying in the new series.

Although they're was class episodes amongst it I felt maybe 12 was the last decent series and the start of the decline.

Indeed, a real shame the show has more crap episodes then good ones.

I have seasons 1-7 (or 8?) on DVD and thats where the show ends for me ...

Yeah i have that one too, that the one that the 1st ep is where they go to NYC ?

I think Season 9 is when the rot set in. That was the season with the Armin Tanzarian reveal which I hated. Also had the episode with Homer taking Lisa to the museum. I feel this is the season where Homer starts his demise.

With the armin one it wasn't a bad episode just the concept that ok the whole episode was just a cop out at the end. Ok we've rewritten history but sure it's ok we'll pretend it never happened

They did the same thing in the sugar addiction one. Shame really, I really have hope every time i see a new episode but always let down.

I used to think the same about the new seasons but I rewatched season 20 i think and I liked it.Not sure but I think I got the jokes better second time around. Its like I have seen the eariler seasons so much,I know every joke.A rewatch might be needed to truely enjoy them.

One scene I liked is when homer said to bart "Millhouse is your only friend" bart get upset and says no and homer starts sing "stand by me" and milllhouse jumps and starts singing with homer.Second time round that me laugh out loud!

How can you hate Homer Simpson? the character is historic and legendary. He's proberly the most popular character in The Simpsons by far. The newer episodes might be crap but what do you expect, the Simpsons has been on for 20 years now, it's predictable that shows that last that long will get stale. The problem is, that the show is still a big money maker and therfore the show continues proberly because Mett Groening and Cast have the best job in the world. Personally I think they should have ended Simpsons right before them Movie came out, or when they reached the 20 Year mark. But now I think it's more about trying to become the longest running show on TV IMO.

Anyway don't hate Homer for the new episodes, remember him for the old.

Oh god the loud-whispering is so , so annoying and lame. Such a pathetic, lazy attempt at humour. I do hate the new Homer as he is now just an obnoxious idiot . He was always an idiot but essentially he had heart, and that's what made him so lovable.

Having said that, all the new Simpsons characters are infuriating.
