Knee problem

    Hi lads.

Have had a coming and going dull pain in my right knee for couple of years now. 95% of time its not a problem but other 5 it can be quiet painful.

Have been to doc, physio, and get different prognosis from inflammed cartilage to strained ligament. got an x ray but nothing showed up.

I can play football on astro turf etc with a dull ache in it but it doesnt hinder me at the time but can get very sore all of a sudden couple of hours later while sitting on the couch. Where it really gets me is hopping over walls or doing leg extensions. Pain is right under my kneecap if i press my finger into the area.

Anybody else experience this. Have tried resting it, icing it and doing various exercises but no joy.

Well, normally I'd advise you to go to a physio/doctor but you've already done that.

Sometimes knee pain can be caused by hamstrings being too weak, and the quads pull more on your knee to compensate. I started a thread ages ago about it, see How to build up hamstring strength?

It's a longshot though - if you feel any pain while doing exercise, stop it. Try and rest it as much as you can. Also it wouldn't hurt going to another doctor and/or a specialist for a second opinion.

I had a similar problem a while back and after much reading, I believe it was runner's knee (or Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome). Mine used to start to hurt after just 2km of running on roads, but like you, the pain was minimal after or during field sports.

I just had my ACL reconstructed and had my tibia re-shaped (after an unrelated injury). My surgeon said he gave my knee a good tidy up and clean out while he was in there, so hopefully when I'm back to fitness I'll be ok.

Here's some more info I found on Google:

    Hope this helps.
