Its less than a month away and i'm getting very excited about the tournament.Out of 32 teams the top 8 in the betting are the realistic winners.I'm going for two teams outright.Brazil firstly at 5/1.I think they are very strong this year.Lucio and Maicon are playing very well at the moment and dani alves is there aswell.kaka is the man and Dunga builds the team around him.It will be a great match when he comes up against Ronaldo.Fabiano and Robinho will hopefully chip in with the goals.

France are the enemy this year and i'm going to have a bet on the English. If Rooney is fit and healthy they have quality all over the pitch. They have buckled under a nations expectations in the past but this year they seem to be more consistent ans solid. They coasted through qualification and they have many players coming to the best part of their careers and they have a proven manager who will keep them focused.I,m not sure who the keeper will be but the defence is sound and a midfield that could finally click.up front they have rooney with a beanstalk in crouch who has a great goalscoring record for england.

The group stage matches offer a lot of good bets at 5/6 and holland at 1/2 against japan seems good but there seems to be loads of value in some of those group matches.

For top scorer Im going for a small bet on gillardino e/w 33/1 because they are playing against the All Whites in the group stage and they could be the worst team of the tournament.

Anyone care to offer their selections?

Stan James are refunding (as free bet) outright bets if Spain win, just to let everyone know.

My main bet is gonna be Huntelaar to top score at around 85s atm. I'm gonna hold out until the night before their first match as he could lengthen before then. I can see the Netherlands go very far this year. They have an 'easy' group and will have an easy last 16 tie aswell.

I have been backing Brazil every week since last January!!! I really fancy them, especially now that Xavi is out for Spain. He is a huge loss. The dangers are Argentina i think, and i dont give England any chance.. I think its silly backing England and Brazil by the was because they would have to meet in the QF's or SF's if my logic is correct???

I think Huntelaar will spend most of the time on the bench mate if VP stays fit.

I could be wrong but I think the coach likes VP up top with Robben and Kuyt on each side and Sneijder in behind

My dark horse for the tournament (not saying their gonna win it) are Chile. Won a bit on them in qualifying and they play an exciting brand of football and have a good manager to boot.

I've thought out a decent few bets so far, haven't placed any yet, though, here's all mine so far:

€5 on Messi Top Scorer + Spain Champions
€2 on Rooney Top Scorer + Brazil Champions
€3 on Mexico to win group
€3 on Argentina to win group
€1 on Serbia to win group
€1 on Paraguay to win group
€5 on Brazil to win group
€3 on Serbia to qualify from group
€1 on Tevez top scorer e/w
€3 on Rooney top scorer e/w
€1 on Van Persie top scorer e/w
€1 on Ivory Coast e/w to win the WC
€1 on Serbia to reach semi-finals.

    Matches

€2 double.. Germany to beat Oz. Serbia to beat Ghana.
€2 treble.. Holland to beat Denmark. Cameroon to beat Japan. Italy to beat Paraguay

Do you think? He played in every qualifier. I'll wait until the team news for the first game is announced to go for it then :)

I agree.. he could find space for VDV rather than Kuyt though, and Elia and Afellay are also going to be considered. Its a close call between VDV and Kuyt, with Van Bommel and De Jong holding and RVP definetly starting over Huntelaar, who just hasn't been at the races this season

    Done already Messi/Spain Messi/Brazil and Messi/Argentina

Gonna back Argentina once the squad is named and it isnt completely insane.

also gonna back Serbia e/w as a darkhorse (50/1 with a few bookies that pay 4 places)

Absolutely disgraceful defence, had 30 on holland and spain in Euro 2008 and was very excited by hollands group stage play. But the truth is, as soon as they came up against a team with true attacking intent they couldn't handle it. Van Bronchorst ( wrong spelling I know ) and Ooijer are too old. Boularouz isn't very good. Mathijsen is average.. Vlaar and the rest just don't stand out.

From the midfield up they are extremely good, I just think that they can be exploited.

I, myself aint yet decided on a team as I can see faults in all teams.

Have to agree with Brazil @ 5-1, looking very solid.

Groups I like Brazil @ 8-13, Holland @ 8-13 and Spain @ 1-3. You can get Holland and Brazil @ 4-6 though not with the same bookie.

    Top-scorer - Villa @ 10-1 and Fabiano @ 12-1

I will obviously be backing in some of the individual matches as well but will wait until the day.

i think holland will be meeting brazil in the q/f and i fancy brazil to beat them.van persie should be very fresh and could have a great tournament.

Well got Chile in a sweepstake in college, winner gets €230 so that's obviously my big one for it.

    Atm I'm looking at:

    Klaas-Jan Huntelaar 50/1 ew
    Oscar Cardozo 100/1 ew

New Winner of the WC 6/4

Cameroon to qualify from Group E Evens
Paraguay to qualify from Group F 1/2
Chile to qualify from Group H 4/6

Really don't know muh about them, but well gotta be confident with them as I've €230 riding on them.:D Least I didn't get Switzerland, Honduras or someone like that.

Seems like they are very attack minded. Read Tim Vickery's opinion here.

they were entertaining in the qualifiers... i wouldn't consider them as potential winners though

On paper Ivory Coast are by far the best team in Africa but still can't win the African nations cup, I wonder are they mentally strong. I thought they would do well in 2006 but they didn't even get out of their group, Brazil will top their group this year and Portugal could cause them problems.

As for Argentina there's the Maradonna factor. The fact he is not bringing Zanetti and Cambiasso is complete lunacy in my opinion

yeah! maradona is a bit of a bolox, to be honest. maybe a rethink is needed before i part with my cash on that one. i will do the ivory coast though, their biggest enemy will be themselves.

I've been taking gradual nibbles on Germany Serbia straight FC for Group D and Serbia to win Group D.They've gone from 4/1 to 10/3 to win the group which isannoying as I never got the 4/1!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 813 ✭✭✭wiger toods

a lot of people have been have been talkin about the fact that dunga has gone very defensive with his squad selection. is this how they intend to play the tournament? i wonder will this work for brazil, as they've always been totaly unorganised at the back anyway because of the way they play. their always all out attack, with defense the last thing they worry about. just cant see them goin there and having the mentality to defend the whole time. im sure instinct wud kick in, at some point. anyone backing england?

You don't actually have 230 riding on them do you? It's a tenner?

Just saw that setantabet are refunding all losing bets on the world cup if Brazil win it. Not a bad bet if you fancy the likes of Spain / Argentina :)

The dutch must be a good value bet. They are have players that are playing on the top of their game with how many in the champs lge final....and RVP etc...cracking bet at 12/1 are they not?

l read in the paper today that RVP does'nt want kuyt in the 1st starting 11.

its the usual sort of crap that they start every tournament.

on paper yea a great bet but in reality they divide every major tournament and go out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,000 ✭✭✭IrishIrish

And their defence is terrible. They'll easily beat average teams because their midfield and attack is so good and creative making everyone think they are a great bet. But then they will be easily beaten by the top teams in the later rounds who have strong defences and good attacks that will rip the dutch apart.

Ok, tbh, I dont know enough to make the bet myself :o, it just occured to me watching the final tonight.

Whats this about RVP and Kuyt? (gonna google...)

I'm really starting to fancy Brazil atm, it's just getting too difficult to look past them. I think they are actually looking reasonably solid defensively and well, I'm sure they'll find the odd goal from somewhere as well... :pac::pac:

Brazil's main advantage is there defence for the last while, their attackers aren't bad but the quality is in the defence and thats the style they play too.

lm looking at doing all the favs to qualify from their groups.
its around 2/1 with boylesports.france is probably the dodgiest.

any1 think its a good bet or a mugs bet?

lm thinking l could have a large bet on it to give me an interest in all the group matches rather than having single bets on them

Mugs bet to be honest mate. France, Germany and Italy are too short imo.

Not the worst bet in the world. The bet only works out at about 5/4 with PP. France really should qualify. South Africa are very poor and the French should have enough quality to see off either Mexico or Uruguay.

Mexico won't make it out of the group, they can barely score a goal, they are terrible.

Mexico have only conceeded 1 goal in the last 8 games. Granted they weren't playing against great teams but what they lack in attack they make up in defense. I was going to do the -1 myself until i seen the probable England team and read that they are resting the FA cup players. I know a lot of them will be out to impress to try be included in the final squad. But just have a feeling this may be closer than is expected.

Went For France to win the world cup :P should get out of their group fairly easily and should get better as the tournament goes on.:(

south africa to finish last in their group at 7/5 looks a decent price to me, i know people will say they have home advantage but 7/5 looks good to me

Have been looking at the betting for the top African team at the world cup. Think Nigeria at 5/1 have the best chance of the African teams to get out of their group. Pretty sure a last 16 place will win this bet.

Mexico are not a bad team ffs. they scored 14 in their last 6 world cup qualifiers scored 3 goals away in Costa Rica. They've scored 13 in 9 friendly games this year, with 6 victories and 2 draws. They were missing a lot of players for the 2 drawn games. They've conceded 4 in 9, 3 of those goals coming against England. Not a bad record imo.

i dont see algeria or south africa getting out of their groups, ivory coast could meet spain in the last 16, ghana will find it tough to get out of their group and if they get 2nd england await, nigeria & cameroon both have reasonable groups and not to tough opponents waiting in the last 16

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

I dont think Spain can win the World Cup without Xavi. At the very least it lengthens their odds by 2 points in the betting. He is the heart of the great Barcelona team of the last two years while Messi has been the soul. He will be a bigger miss than if Torres missed the tournament. There is no replacement for him and Spain are not the same without him. Its a positive that Villa has signed for Barcelona - he can think clearly now without worrying about his future.

I've gone with the Dutch. It might turn out to be a (small) silly bet but I can see them performing in the climate, their players are going well and they are an attractive price.
