So what have we got at the moment?

    RTE1
    RTE2
    Test channel (originally TV3)
    TG4
    RTE News
    2nd Test channel

    RTE Radio 1
    2FM
    Lyric FM
    RnaG

Is this correct for all transmitters? Would it be worth keeping a sticky in order to keep track of any changes? I'd have thought the RTE digital radio stations would make a re-appearance at some stage in the future.

The channel line up should be the same at each site, it's one stream sent to them all, unless they have an "opt" facility in the system, it's not as easy to opt from "mux" if you like, as it is from the analogue TX system.

Are any of the test channels in HD?

No, not that I know of. The PlayTV / PS3 I use automatically upscales to 720p, so I could be open to correction on this.

With the exception of RTE2 (704x576) they are less than full SD resolution - all at 544x576:( Don't know why they are saving bandwidth at this stage!

When did the 2nd test channel start? has been just a testcard or has been showing anything? I've been afraid to rescan my Sony Tv since someone said the channels weren't showing up.

It's safe to rescan with the sony's
    Just do a manual scan.

I do a scan every second day.

I think I saw reports of a test card last week. Since I scanned it in there hasn't been any video - only occasional clicking on the audio. On DVBviewer on the PC right now, no video or audio.

22.00 Update - there are two audio streams available! When I pick the second stream (NAR) I can get the associated test card which is colour bars overlaid with (RTENL Ath Cliath) and a set of moving black bars with an associated audio click when the bars meet in the middle of the screen. It's like a simplified version of the audio sync test used on BBC HD.

    Here's a screen grab:

There's no problem rescanning with Panasonics at present. I did a rescan last week and all channels were stored.

Lyric (I think it was Lyric) was playing the other 2nd audio stream on that channel the other day.

As TV3 is due to go on what is now RTENL1 would 3e be a possibility for RTENL2?

    Or BBC 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

Which is more likely - 3e or BBC1? Was there a license change recently for 3e that could facilitate it's appearance on DTT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

TV3 won't be on DTT till
    (a) DTT offically launches
    (b) TV3 actually pay RTENL.

They don't get a free ride.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,228 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

TV3 refuse to pay to go on all the relay stations at present so I do not think they will be in a rush to go on DT if it involves extra fees. If 3E has to pay the same as TV3, do not expect them anytime soon either.

However BBC1 might make it onto the DTT if the MoU is implemented the way it was launched before the sticky finger marks got on to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

RTE won't put BBC R4 on DAB, vetoed by management even though those implementing DAB keen.

Who pays the Transmission, feed and royalty costs for BBC on DTT? BBC won't. UK Government won't.

That is not clear, because it was not discussed, but I would have expected that from the wording of the MoU, the costs would be bourne where they lay. That is, for BBC broacasts on Irish DTT, no royalty would be paid, carriage costs would be bourne by RTE, with recipricol arrangements applying for NI. If it was a straight commercial arrangement, why have a MoU?

Clearly, the sticky finger marks were left by others who thought differently.

I'd have thought there would be some kind of "must carry" status?

And a 'must pay' status as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

TV3 are obligated to arrange carriage and have full coverage. They to date have only partially done this, claiming RTENL is charging too much. This claim is nonsense. TV3 are actually technically in breach of licence but are getting slack as they claim they are negotiating.

The same will apply to Digital. The onus is on TV3 to have national coverage.

The onus is on RTENL to give them it at sustainable commercial rate. RTENL would be in trouble if they subsidized TV3.

RTE Radio 1 Extra has reappeared, but with EPG data for RTE Radio 1 and no audio.

Might this see the return of all the RTE digital radio stations?

That would be the most logical step, a DTT Promo channel. (I see the RTE NL 1 Test Card has had another tweak and now says "TDT - DTT"...)

TDT - DTT = Teilifís Digiteach Trastíre - Digital Terrestrial Television

The captions in Irish appeared this date one month ago initally as Tarchur Digiteach (Digital Transmission) and few days later changed to Digiteach (Digital).

RTE Radio One Extra now has audio, but seems to be just replicating RTE Radio One.

And as pointed out in other threads, RTENL 2 is now high definition.

Different programme to Radio 1 on it at the moment, even though the EPG for R1 Extra is listing the same programme as Radio 1. (John Creedon Show).

According to the online schedule for Extra its been a collection of R1 programmes since 7pm.

It could be your TV is not HD compatible as I am still receiving a colour test card with HD 1080i and duel audio

I was receiving the test card for RTENL Test 2 up to a couple of days ago. I have a HD TV and a Sky Plus HD box and that works fine. The box i am using for RTE DTT is a Sky Line STB 40 which i bought of ebay. It' not a HD box. I am picking up RTE DTT from Maghera with a very good signal and with all other channels working fine.

Sorry, I thought you have a MPEG-4 Digital TV. Then it is your STB for your RTE digital. HD start transmitting on RTENL2 a few days back and before that it was SD.
I assume your box can not accept 1080i over the air to your Sky Line STB40

Similar problem on my Sagem Picnic box - Lyric + black screen. My Samsung HD TV is showing the 1080i test card loud and clear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,077 ✭✭✭parasite

it's not a problem with your tv, the testcard on both rtenl channels just intermittently disappears

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,868 ✭✭✭Apogee

The RTÉNL2 testcard is now transmitting in 1440x1088 resolution. It won't display on the Sagem and Skyline boxes, because they are MPEG4 SD boxes and are not MPEG4 HD compatible.

I wonder will their be any HD channels on RTE DTT when it launches or will it be a few years before we see any HD Channels on the service? I will upgrade to a new HD box when HD channels start to launch.

I can see the RTENL2 HD test card from Maghera. I have a Net gem HD DTT box and an SD telly BTW.

Roll on the world cup in HD lads :D

    Hi Guys,

Got 2 Panasonic TVs displaying all the Test channels , including the very exciting HD test channel .....

A question for ye ... Is there any way of telling what resolution is being broadcast from a standard Panasonic TV , or are ye using PC based DTT cards to work this out ?

Just worked out today how to switch between the dual audio channels using the Option Button :-))

There seems to be a lot of activity happening today with the RTE DAB stations been added and no audio on RTE News Now at the moment. Also epg information for RTENL1,RTENL2 tests and RTE News Now have disappeared.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

The changes seem to have had a bad effect on my Panasonic. No sound on RTE1 and the channel won't change from RTENL2 using the channel up and down button.... meanwhile the Playstation Play TV seems to be taking it in it's stride.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

Spoke too soon. Someone had been over-eager with the remote control and deleted channels etc. A re-scan set everything right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Mr McBoatface
