Seeing as three of our regular posters are heading over to Brive-la-Gaillarde for the 24 hour world championships to represent Ireland (only two of them are competing, the last one is more of a runner (in the gopher/fetching sense of the word!!), I thought it might be nice to have a thread when we can wish the guys the best, and hopefully get a few updates from Lecheile on how the guys are getting on.

Some more details about the race:
    Website: www.24h-brive.fr
Date: May 13th through May 14th
    Time: 10am (CET)
Course: 1,200m Loop in the center of BRIVE - mainly flat circuit, half on asphalt half on the path in the gardens of the city.
    List of competitors: here
Live Updates: Here, but hopefully the non running runner will provide us with some real live updates!

Best of luck Enduro and woundedknee! Hope you brought a good book Lecheile!

we look forward to regular updates from LC.

WK, don't forget LC's only your 'gopher' for the 24hours of the race, but enjoy it!:)

Good luck to those competing. Having been out for a 1 hour run this morning I simply can't comprehend running for 24 hours.

Best of luck to the two lads and the rest of the team. Fully confident in some recession busting good news over the course of the event.

I'm not going to get my hopes up just yet. There's a whole 26 hours between race finish and Avonbeg :pac:

lol, not a hope. There is more to do while crewing than while running.

Team Ireland arrived safe and well in Brive. It was a long drive down from Paris extended by traffic getting around Paris, that would have made the Friday of a bank holiday on the M50 in Dublin seem like a recreational activity!!!

Everybody is in good shape and its only when you start mixing with some of the other competitors that you realise that on a scale of normal to complete nutter, anyone that we would know is a lot closer to the normal end. Talk of multi-day running events is being bandied about like confetti at a wedding, and to put things in perspective one of the guys that we picked up from the US team in Paris described his most recent 6-day event - apparently he normally only gets tired on day 2, after that tiredness is not an issue - now that's mad.

Its just over T minus 24 and today will involve technical meetings, opening ceremonies and a few last minute preparations. Its starting to get a bit exciting now :)

And by the way KC - any chance of finding time to read a book has been wiped out - there is a massive Dechathlon across the road from the hotel.

I wonder if they stock Zum muscle rub (used by some of Ireland's foremost endurance athletes (and me)). I expect they will stock it, by the time the 24 hour race is over. ;)

The list of entrants, together with - what I presume - is their record distance covered over 24h?

    Fascinating stuff

Goes to show that the Irish are very competitive in this sport (Japanese and Russians be damned!). By the way, the French use a comma as a decimal separator rather than a full-stop/period. So they don't cover in excess of 240,000 kilometers (which would make for a great spectator sport!).

Hats off to you guys , all a little nuts but in "I'd love to do that some day " sort of way. Good luck

All the briefing has been briefed, the parades complete, the event well and truly opened. Twelve hours remain and the last of the fine tuning of fueling plans and logistics continues.

The course is a very pleasant circuit through a park in the centre of Brive and each team has a tent (under an enclosed structure :) )from which they support their athletes. Food and supplies can only be delivered from the table in this tent so it will be very interesting to see how is will work out as 200 runners need to be serviced. The weather today was miserable for a lot of it with regular downpours and cold temperatures. The day finished up very nicely with bright sun and heat - hopefully it augurs well for tomorrow morning.

The bags are packed, the plans are agreed and all that remains is to get a good night's sleep and get going early in the morning. The following is a pic from the parade through the centre of town today - it was great to hear the regular shouts for the Irlandes!

A bit of an early morning discussion here in the office with my non-running colleague brought up an interesting question

While reviewing various 24hr PBs, I saw a fellow Danish guy, Christensen's (namesake!) record is 163km in 24hr. The question I was asked was do I does anyone else think this is within the realms of possibility (as opposed to the 200km + guys which I would never consider).

    The maths:
    163km = 100miles
    24hr x 4 (and a bit) = 100 miles

So it's 4.1 miles every hour. You could run 4 x 10 min miles and sleep / eat for the remaining 20 mins every hour. Now obviously you'd run for the first few hours and bank some sleeping / eating time, but to me it sounds do-able (with the correct training)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Why don't you look at it a different way: Could you run a marathon in four hours, sleep for two hours, run another marathon, sleep for two hours, another marathon, sleep for two hours, and finish off with 21.4 miles in four hours before having your final two hour nap? So just under 4 x four hour marathons. Doesn't sound so achievable when you put it like that. Even with your strategy, you're talking about spending 16 hours on your feet.

I would imagine that runner's PB was probably down to having to pull out after a certain stage in the race. The runner may not have run at a pace that would accomplish 100 miles in 24 hours, but rather set out at a 200km+ target, but had to pull out due to injury. I think that half the battle is managing to survive the 24 hours on your feet without rupturing any organs, bursting toes, or suffering the multitude of other nasty side-effects of running for such a prolonged period.

Its a perfect day for running in Brive. Nice and cool and more importantly dry:) All four guys have started off well clocking around 10km in the first hour. Its a huge setup here with very impressive displays at the food tables - the variety is amazing.

Looking at the live scoreboard, Scott Jurek has set the pace with a speed that would see him completing 330kms+ in the 24 hour period (which is not sustainable (WR=303kms). So strategy at work already.

JB - that pic was taken from the start at the Town Hall that led onto the track. Nice mixture of surfaces with only a few feet of cobble to be crossed at each lap.

All going well - still dry and perfect for running. Steady pace out of all our guys and all going to plan.

Might be useful to have a point of reference, to compare movement up/down (the real story!):
    Position/Name (Time: 12:08)
    129-TM
    144-EK
    151-EG
    178-JO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 480 ✭✭n-dawg

Position/Name (Time 13:00) Change in Position
    116-TM +13
    133-EK +11
    139-EG +12
    165-JO +13

All the Irish being remarkable consistent with there pace... Starting to move up the ranking too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

After 5 hours: Position/Name (Time 14:00) Change in Position
    96-TM +20
    120-EK +13
    135-EG +4
    163-JO +2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 480 ✭✭n-dawg

After 6 hours, Position/Name (Time 15:00) Change in Position
    91-TM +5
    109-EK +11
    132-EG +3
    158-JO +5

Enduro running perfect splits and still gaining lots of places

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭lecheile

Six hours in and all still going well and according to plan. As the times indicate the consistent pace is delivering an improvement in placings - very early days yet though!!! Weather still dry and a pleasant temperature. Leaders of the race going an impressive 30% faster than our guys - well it will be impressive if they can maintain it.

Some pics of the four at just after the 4hr 30 mark with 50km completed.

We're nearly 10 hours into the race and our guys all still going steady and strong. There are cracks beginning to show throughout the field but the performances at the front continue to be impressive. Its still bright here and the temperature is beginning to drop a little
