    Hey,

Just looking for some advice. I have started taking some protein as I was not getting enough in my diet. I read the "stickies" and some people said you should take it after your workout and when you are going to bed.

I then read that its good to take it before your workout as it increases your metabolic rate during workout.

I'm looking to lose weight more then bulk up by the way.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are or is either way good.

    Cheers,

You should consume protein through whole, nutritious foods in every meal of the day.

However, I presume you are referring to a protein supplement such as whey protein. So in short, yeah taking this after a workout and before bed are perfect times to take it.

I would advise taking it with water directly after your workout to aid quicker digestion and supply to the muscles. Then before bed it would probably be a good idea to take it with milk to allow for slower, longer-lasting supply throughout the night. However, there are more qualified and knowledgable people here on Boards than myself so they may have even better advice, so listen to them:D

thanks, yes I meant a supplement. I do eat protein which each meal now but I can't seem to eat enough for my body weight (230 lbs) , plus I cant eat straight after the gym so thought the supplement would do the job short term.

Whey protein is a supplement to your normal diet, so the only way to answer your question is for you to lay out your normal days eating.

I drink a whey shake about half an hour before working out and sometimes straight after. The post workout shake is dependant on how soon I can get a meal into me, if its straight away I don't bother with the shake.

Not to be too nit picking, but I hate the way people say they "take" protein, or "use" whey like they're a drug. No one says they use milk or take steak. That's not just aimed at the OP, but more of a general comment.

tbh I think it is more down to the fact that whey protein is a supplement to the diet, rather than being considered a 'drug'. It isn't a true foodstuff like milk and steak and is exactly what it claims to be, a supplement. You would never say 'I eat multivitamins' or 'I drink cod liver oil', you would say 'take' or 'use', so why should it be different for whey protein when its just another supplement?

I wouldn't say I eat multivitamins, but then it's a tablet. I would say I drink cod liver oil, because I do.

Whey powder is a food as far as I'm concerned, so it's eaten or drank.

This is all pendantry of the highest order of course, on my side. It just irks me when I hear people in the gym talking about "using" or "taking" whey like its something other than food.
