Tell us about your eagles on this thread.

I was close tonight. I hit a drive and rescue wood to the 4th at Skerries to 12 feet pin high. However I was left with one of those horrible sidehill putts with about 2 feet of break. I missed it on the low side.

Anyway I doubt if I'll be troubling this thread much this year.

I had one on Sunday. Drive and a 4 iron to the 13th in Kilcock. Had about a 20ft putt direct up the hill and crawled in off the left lip. First one of the year.

Curragh GC par 4 3rd hole last thursday, Drive, 56 degree from about 30 yards dribbled into the hole, first of the year..;)

Drive and a 12 foot putt on the short Par 4 5th in
Castleknock. The putt was a double breaker so well pleased
    with that...

had 3 eagles ever. Par 4 14th Curra West, driver and pitching wedge, but never saw it as there was a small pump house in between me and the pin. Par 4 6th Oughterard 3 wood off tee and 5 iron from 156 mts, never saw that one either, there were a lot of shadows on the green and it was difficult to see flag. par 4 9th Ballinrobe drive and PW from 90 mts but thankfully I did see this one.:D

last week in roganstown, ok drive , smashed a fairway driver into the greenside bunker on the left, and a beauty of a shot that was only ever going into the hole .
    (fourth hole par 5 roganstown)

Had a good few eagles. Namely at Dublin City GC where I was a member.

Last one was 2 Monday's ago at Edmondstown on the 4th hole, 494 meters.
With the wind helping I had 195-200 meters left to the green, ripped my 16 deg hybrid iron just over the little stream just short of the green and it ran up to 15ft. Dranied the putt for eagle.

Was damn pleased with myself because I've always struggled at the 4th in the past when I used to play there regularly as a kid :pac:

Looking back about 13 years now, this is my best eagle yet...

I remember myself and my bro were playin against my uncle and his mate, and on the 2nd hole of a downhill dogleg left, my uncle hit his 2nd shot to 1 foot and began the predictable boasting and upping his shot (in a fun way ofcourse), so i had a pitch of about 50 yards to make, needed to land over a bunker and let the roll take the ball to the green.. it did this alright, then got closer and closer to the hole and dropped in.. was flippin fantastic to take him down a peg or 2 so quick :D

I'm a $hoite golfer but I've had 4 Eagles coz my home course is shortish. Holed an 8 iron on the Index 2 2nd hole from about 160 yards (slightly downhill). Green slopes right-->left so pitched about 10 feet right, checked on 2nd bounce and rolled sideways and dead-weight into the hole. You would have sworn I knew what I was doing.

2 others came on the Mickey-Mouse Par 5 16th. Drive & 5 iron to just off the green holed a downhiller of about 20 feet and then another on the same hole, drive and hybrid to 12 feet and holed the putt.

1 other came on the Par 5 14th but it was winter and forward tees, Drive and a Hybrid to 25 feet & holed the putt.

Now that I reflect, I think I've holed about 85% of every eagle putt I've had! I had a 10 foot Eagle putt on the Par 4 3rd hole before and walked off with a 5. I $hit you not.

On a good run at the moment. Eagled number 8 in kinsale with an 80 yard pitch about a month ago.
Followed by another in Killarney "Mahony's point" a week later on the fourth or 5 th a par five . Five iron to 15 feet and canned the putt. Same day lipped out for hole in one. Ball swung around hole and ended up 18 inches.

I've had one eagle - last summer at the par 5 14th at royal dublin - scuffed my second shot into rough on the right, had nearly given up on finding the ball but eventually found it. Then knocked a 7-iron into the hole from there - not a traditional eagle but memorable nontheless!

I have had quite a few this year, got myself a nice one today. Long par 5 (2nd hole) in coollattin, Big drive (down wind ) and a 6 iron 180 to front of green, caught it flush and ball got up on the wind, pitched about 6 feet from flag took one bounce and stopped a foot away for a handy tap in eagle. First time I have eagled it and was playing as easy as that hole gets but an eagle all the same !!

Had a juicy eagle on the 9th in Rossmore a couple of days ago. Par 5.

3 iron off the tee about 220. Middle of the fairway. Another 3 iron about 210. Within 3ft of the hole. Easy tap in.

A 430 yard par 5? Some big hitters would use a driver and a wedge!

Depends on the hole, if I make a 430 yard par 5, with a lake in the middle that starts at 220 yards and runs to 300yards then There's no way anyone can take a driver on the hole unless their massive or very very short! Then have either a massive bunker or another water hazard just short of the green to force you to either carry the ball a minimum of 210 over water/bunker or take a lay up! Its not all about the length of a hole, its also about the layout of it!

Ah now come on...where have you ever seen a hole like this? A par 5 where you hit it either less than 220 or carry a minimum of 300? Ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,749 ✭✭✭Speak Now

I thought par 5's had to be over 450 yards, maybe it's only a guideline though.I guess a 430 yard hole could be up hill and as another poster stated have a water feature in front of the green. Of course this is all on the assumption that the poster is male.
Anything over 400 yards would probably be a par 5 for ladies.

I think the OP meant metres and not yards.

It's about 420m to 440m and has two ditches running across it.

    White - Par 5 440m Index 18
    Blue - Par 5 417m Index 18

I believe the tee-shot may be downhill so it should be a reachable par 5 in two with a good drive.

    ^ that's the one.

You could drive over the first river and pitch, or hit an iron before the river and blast it on with another.

I was putting for an eagle tonight at the 8th at Skerries. It's not an easy hole, measuring 500 yards off the members tee.

I hit a good drive and then a 5 wood onto the back right fringe.

However it's a very big green and I was left with a 25 yard putt with about a 6 foot swing. The eagle putt never came close and I ended up three putting. However it's a difficult dogleg to hit the green in 2 so I was kinda happy with that.

Had a nice one on the 18th in Rathcore last year, shortish par 5 with water around the front of the green.

Hit a drive up the right, in the rough near a bunker, not great. Had about 190 to the green, nice 19deg rescue straight in at the pin, landed 3 feet short and ended up about 4 feet past.

    CANNED the put:cool:

Had a few on my home course but one comes to mind on the par 5 4th, standard enough drive in the fairway, 3 wood ripped from about 230 out to three feet below the hole, rolling past the hole within maybe 3 inches on the way.

Ever felt ripped off when you've had an eagle?:o

Yep, total risk and reward. Lovely finisher. I'd say it's made a balls of a card or two in the past.

If I was protecting a score I think it woulda been an 8 iron to the middle of the fairway and a gap wedge, but feck it, I was protecting nothing that day!!

So it was all duck or no dinner, and happily I had duck:D

Had my first one of the year last week. Citywest 13th on Champo course, 570yds and was such a tap in Eagle that I took me a wee pic to commemorate

had 2 in one round for the first time a few weeks ago in Charlesland,5th and 15the hole, tbh after eaglein on the 5th with a 22 deg hybrid to 10 feet i then eagled the 15th thinking it was a par4,hit a 6 iron to 2 feet, couldn't beleive it was a par 5,it's actually a nice hole and would make a decent par4

Played poorly at Carlow in the midland scratch but eagled the 18th in the first round after a rescue to 3ft and hit the hole with a 100ft eagle attempt from the back of the green in R2

Won a club Bruen trial this afternoon with an eagle two on our par 4 index 2 16th. 7 iron from 170 yards. First eagle on a par 4. This hole always kills me so nice to tame it for once! (strictly speaking this wasn't my eagle, it was 'our' eagle ... but heck I holed from 170yds, I'll damn well own it if i want!!!!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

In an otherwise truly shocking round today I eagled our par 5 5th. Caught pin high right side of green. Executed a good flop over a bunker which landed softly and ran about 10 feet in for an eagle. It's important that I can find something good to say after the worst round of putting in quite some time.

After playing the game since 1995 I finally got my first Eagle today since 2003 (have had four altogether).

It was last hole in Deerpark out in Howth second time played it not great course but enjoyable for such small price (hate them bunkers with not proper sand) but hit peach of wedge and landed one bounce and pop in the hole.:D

Got one a few years ago in 18th in Athenry (330m) during the 9 hole playoff for presidents prize. Drive to middle of fairway, wedge from about 120m straight into the cup. The two guys playing with me followed me in for birdie (wouldn't believe it if i didn't see it happen myself).

Waterford Senior Scratch cup first round... 2 over after 4 and looking at a very long weekend. Good drive down the middle of the 5th, and 8 iron straight at the flag. Took one bounce and disappeared, playing partner thought i was through the back, no reaction from the next tee box... i could have sworn i heard the clunk of a ball hitting the flag but was not sure... walk up, quick look in the bushes over the green and then i said feck it i'll look in the hole and there it was...

I've had a couple of hole in ones and i've held a few 2nd shots and there is nothing that beats the feeling of seeing it roll or go in the hole. its definitely not as exciting as not being 100% sure where your ball ended up and then finding it in the hole...

Happened to me when I got eagle years ago. I hit eight iron over a hill blocking the view of hole anyway walked up could not see my ball anywhere. There was tick rough all around the green so myself and playing partner were looking for good 5-7 minutes. Gave up my playing partner played on as he had bridie when he went to flag there was ball in hole. Like you it killed the excitment of the eagle feeling for some reason, still deligted but its much better when you see how you did it and how ball went in.

Just lipped out on the 7th at Grange Castle on Tuesday. Drive 285yds, 200yds 8 iron to 3ft, missed the downhiller would you believe and left if 4ft past! Got the one on the way back.

Last Tuesday,s Open at Roganstown. The 10th off the yellows, drive and a 7 iron to 2 foot, straight putt and in for eagle. Pitch mark was 2 inches from the cup, as close to an albatross as i have ever come.

    BTW, big breeze behind me

Slightly off topic but had 38 points with 23 on the back, 39 won with two more 39's in second and third. On the 8th was in the bunker short left of the green, had a wicked lie, hit the lip went over my head and hit my bag - 1 shot penalty !!! i would have won on a count back!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,231 ✭✭✭G1032

Had loads of them but the one that sticks out is one of the first eagles I had. Years ago, like 15 or so years ago, a neighbouring club asked ours for a challange match before they played a Senior Cup match - maybe provincial semi, not sure though.
Anyway I was in second match out in the challange match. 2nd hole (short par 4 of about 340-50 yards or so. Snap hooked my drive but had a 3/4 swing from edge of trees. Made good contact with a 9 iron and, bingo, went in the hole for an eagle. Dead chuffed, I walked on down near to where my opponent was, waited for his shot, and saw that disappear into the cup for a half!!

Never had an albatross and never a hole-in-one

I had an eagle putt last weekend from 10 feet.

Shortly afterwards I had a 6 foot birdie putt.

And soon after that I had a 1 foot par putt.

    Doh! Still, easy par.

Does the eagle become void if you spent more than 5 minutes looking the ball :D

    Nope!
A ball is not "lost" when it's in the hole, even if you look for it (in the rubbish) for the 5 minutes and don't find it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

I think I had my first eagle when I was about 14.

I completely duffed my drive about 150 yards then hit a fairway wood for my 2nd shot onto an elevated and out of sight green. Looked all around for my ball but eventually found it in the hole.

What happens if your ball is in the hole but you don't know it is. You look for the 5 minutes and don't find it. But then you declare your ball lost, go back and hit another and when you arrive on the green you realise your first ball was in the hole all along? Does declaring it lost when it is in the hole mean it's no longer the ball in play?

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

    Decision 1-1/2 covers that...
Player Unaware He Has Holed Out Puts Another Ball into Play
    Q. A player, unable to find his ball, puts another ball into play.
He then discovers that his original ball is in the hole. What is the ruling?
    A. The score with the original ball counts. The play of the hole was completed when the player holed that ball.
