Excellent game! I usually play an islands map and get a wall built early on, that encloses most of my island, with towers overlooking the bits that aren't walled. It's fun to watch your opponents land and get creamed!:D

Sometimes I prefer the older games, Age of Empires 2 is a classic and I still play it on my old laptop along with Champtionship Manager 2!!

always preferred aoe: rise of rome to age of kings, but i would imagine kings has aged better.

I tried paying aoe2 online a few times back in the day but could only find servers populated with a$$holes. Does anyone remember alpha centuri? I'm still playing it on my win7 gaming rig, having carefully moved the install from every machine i've owned since the win95 days!

I loved alpha centuri- it was one of the first strategy games I ever played. Sid Meier games are great and as I said I loved the game and wish I still had it. The diplomacy and interactions with the other leaders was quite good.

Even if it's a legit copy you got, log in to Hamachi. There's literally hundreds of players still there.

sometimes there can be discolouring effects if you alt tab a few times. Other than that I haven't had any issues

Age of Empires II The Age of Kings was and is fantastic.

    - After I finished the Campaigns my favourite way to play was to set up a random map of just the right size and with just the right amount of multiple enemy opposition (About 3 diff Enemies) that you had to literally manage everything perfectly from the first villager collecting wood up to decent walls, castles etc.

    - The last bit a number of hours later was when you survived somehow, became Top Dog and then went around the Map with your Trebuchets and Paladins hacking burning and slaying.

    Good times :D

Main base & mini base was my favouite thing on large maps. You'd spend a while doing my big base, and somewhere deep in some forest, my mini base would ambush any scout that wandered by :D

screw that. FORTRESS FTW! I loved getting my trebuchet, knocking down the trees to form a back passage into my enemies bases >:D

That is exactly what I did too - can't remember the level name but there was one level where to do this took absolutely ages and ages but was totally worth it.

AOE was the first full price game I ever bought, I was 10 years old and saved for weeks after getting a trial with PC Live! or some other PC mag. It was pretty expensive at £30 or £40 for the full game. It is one of the only strategy games I've ever completed, I played on the Zone with 56k right up until they shut down their servers.

My favourite multiplayer maps were the Heroes only maps, it was like Regicide in that you had your King garrisoned in the castle and you started off with two villagers only and no town centre (so that's all you had). There was trigger that produced 50 or 60 of a particular hero and when you got X kills your hero was upgraded, from Woad Raider to something else and then something better etc etc right up to Ghengis Khan who pwned everybody :D

Those were the days man, I miss them :(

Love age of empires, don't know how many hours I spent playing it, in my top 3 games of all time. Went back to play it recently though and it won't work properly when I reinstalled it, the text is messed up in game for the conquerors, anyone know any solution to this or come across it before? AOK works fine

the first two are easily the best games i've ever played, espeacially aoe2. i loved the joan of arc missions :D
never thought much of aoe3 though, i don't know why but it just never compared to the other two for me

It should also be said that Gameranger, a hosting/lobby client (only 3mb or so, methinks) recently got their **** together and made it so you can play AoE 2 with almost anybody, with very little connection issues. It's brilliant. I play all the time.

Been trying to play aoe on gameranger but it never works. I keep getting a message saying something about the symmetric nat router. When I go in to a room they tell me I am italic, I have tried loads of things just can't manage to get it working.

Anyone have an idea what I need to do? I did everything they tell you to do in support.
