    2010 Hurling Championship Pools
    Hoydy folks,

Started a week late unfortunately but its time to start up the championship pools. Daysha has handed it over to me for the summer so I'll do my best.

Rather than go with my slightly over the top format suggestion on the other thread I will be using the exact same format used in the 2010 National Hurling League pools ran by Daysha as we are all familiar with it.

Furthermore, I will post two separate sets of results; one for the Liam McCarthy Cup only, and one for the other competitions.

I will copy and paste the rules from the NHL pools here for reference.

1.Each Monday evening I will post up the fixtures for the coming week and by Tuesday or Wednesday I'll have the league table of posters and points for the previous week just gone.

2.Late comers will be accepted but points will be forfeited for any games missed.

3.Predictions will be accepted and valid by 12 noon on the day of the games.Should a poster miss this deadline, points will be forfeited. If a poster does miss this deadline, the poster can appeal via PM but where the poster PMs or submits predictions after the stated throw in of the game, there will be no room for appeal.

4.The points system I am using has a twist to it.You get 2 points for predicting the winner of the game.Should a poster predict within 2 points of the winning margin, that poster will receive a bonus point. Points will not be given for draws so don't post a draw as a prediction. (This is to prevent complications that may arise from teams winning drawn games after extra time) Needless to say if you predict a team to win and they lose you get no points.

5.Bonus points will be awarded at the end of the season for predicting correctly the respective winners and runners up of each competition; those competitions being McCarthy Cup, Munster, Leinster, Ulster, Ring, Rackard and Meagher. Bonus points also available for picking teams relegated from the Ring and Rackard cups. (No relegation in the McCarthy cup this year)

6.Posters must predict champions, finalists and relegations in their first post with their first round of predictions.

N.B. Predictions for Finalists, champion, and team relegated from Christy Ring Cup and Ulster finalists and champion will not be accepted after midday Sunday the 16th, as the competitions are already underway. All other champion/finalist predictions will not be accepted after midday of Saturday May the 22nd as the Leinster championship begins that day.

All-Ireland: Galway to beat Tipperary (But it'll probably go to a replay :D )
    Leinster: Galway to beat Kilkenny
    Munster: Tipperary to beat Waterford
    Ulster: Antrim to beat Down

This is a shot in the dark now for some of these and I'm not too even too sure on whether they can meet or not, but based on the bit I've seen:

    Ring: Westmeath to beat Kerry
    Rackard: London to beat Armagh
    Meagher: Donegal to beat Monaghan

    Ring relegated: Mayo
    Rackard relegated: Louth

The system is weighted towards being very conservative with predictions.
If you predict kerry will beat tipp this sunday you get the same amount of points as if you correctly predicted that limerick would beat tipp/cork on june 20th!

Surely there should be more points given for longshots.

I have decided to make one last rule change- 3 points will be awarded for successfully predicting a draw rather than 2. (This is because predicting a winner is worth 2 points and a bonus point is given if the player predicts the points difference within 2 points.)

Also- I'm not sure what to do in the event of a game going to extra time. Lets take the Cork v Tipp game next weekend: Lets suppose it finishes drawn after 70 minutes, and Cork win after extra time. (Lets for the sake of this example overlook the fact that the draw would go to a replay and not extra time!)

Player 1 predicts a Cork win.
    Player 2 predicts a draw.

Both player1 and player2 can claim to have made the correct prediction; but who gets the points?!

Dont allow a draw as a selection and withhold giving points until the match is eventually settled?

Perhaps also give players a chance to rename their selection if it goes to a replay? For instance, if Kilkenny drew with Galway and Joe Canning got injured in the first game, I might be more willing to select Kilkenny to win the replay. Other little factors might also lead you to changing selection, (e.g venue of replay, different referree, amount of games players have played in the last number of weeks.)

    All-Ireland Championship;
Only 3 out of 13 so far see Kilkenny winning 5 in a row. Galway and Tipperary get 5 votes each.

Leinster; Galway get the nod so far with 8 votes compared to Kilkenny's 5.
Munster; Everyone predicts the winners of the Cork v Tipp game to go on to win the Munster title. Tipp lead 7-6.
In other competitions Antrim are clear favourites to win Ulster, Westmeath get most votes in the Christy Ring, Armagh and London get 6 votes each in the Rackard cup, and Donegal get most votes in the Meagher Cup.

    In the match predictions the boardsies predictions are as follows;
    Kildare 10-3 Wicklow
Kerry 9-4 Westmeath (Interestingly, 7 people predict Westmeath to win the Ring cup and only 4 tip Kerry)
    Down 13-0 Mayo
    Derry 9-4 Meath
    London 13-0 Monaghan
    Armagh 13-0 Tyrone

Predictions by 12pm tomorrow and best of luck to you all! :D

Good luck to everyone taking part. Missed out on winning this by just a few points last year so I would've loved to try go one step further, but I know I just won't have the time to get those predictions in every week.

G'luck to jordainius as well (you'll understand come results time tomorrow :))
