I guess the best thing to do is go get a test done, your doc should be able to do it for you.
Most supermarkets carry 'free from' ranges now, and health food shops carry dairy free cheese, milk etc.

Have a food diary ready for when you go see the doctor-it'll save on extra visits. Make a record of when you suffer from any ill effects after eating certain foods (bloating etc.)

I have 4 intolerances, one of which may be an actual allergy (I'm getting that checked out over the summer). I got a blood test done. If you ask your dr he/she should be able to help.

Hope you've been sorted by now, but just in case...remember that most Irish people aren't lactose intolerant (i.e. have problems digesting the sugar in milk after infancy) but quite a lot of people have issues with the proteins, some of which are also found in the milk of other mammals. In other words, most Irish people wouldn't benefit from lactose-free products, unless they have a temporary lactose intolerance, which can arise after, for example, antibiotics. This is because some of your enzymes for breaking down lactose are produced by your gut bacteria, one of the reasons it is recommended you take probiotic capsules or natural (not the branded 'probiotic' sugary drinks) organic yoghurts after antibiotic treatment.

Get a test done from a reputable practitioner (if 'silver bars' are mentioned at any stage then run away).

Why do you think you have lactose intolerance? What are your symptoms?

For me, I think the simpler route is the best....I just listen to my body.

I've given up gluten in the past for a month then reintroduced it into my diet and the negative effects occured almost straight away...hence I now avoid gluten.

Same with the likes of dairy or lactose or whatever you think you might be intolerant to. Why not give it up for 30days, introduce it back into the diet and see how your body responds? I'd much prefer to listen to my body then to shell out a load of money for them to tell me I could be intolerant to a ridiculous amount of foods.

My housemate got a food intolerance test done, more out of curiousity than because of any symptoms she had and she was given a huge list of all the foods she is 'intolerant' to.

What do you mean by the bit in bold? Thinking of getting some blood work done to see if everything is ok.

My friend went to some kind of 'consultant' who ended up telling him he was lactose inolerant and allergic to beer and red wine etc etc....I asked him what test they administerted and he said they had him hold a silver bar which was connected to a machine....I didn't hear the rest as I was too busy sniggering.

The only scientific methods of testing for allergies are blood tests and skin tests

Oh christ, pretty hilarious, no way I'd have accepted that! :D

That sounds like the machine used by the scientologists in their stress test. i wouldn't be surprised if that consultant was involved and was telling him to cut alcohol and dairy in the hope that he feel better and return to get hooked into something else.

I thought that the lactose was fermented off in the cheese making process! How are you with milk?
