I don't know if this is a ridiculous question but can you be allergic to caffeine. I drink buckets of tea and rarely drink coffee, unless I'm out in a restaurant for dinner. I've noticed that any time I drink coffee which might be only once every 6 weeks if even that, I have to go to the toilet straight away (sorry if TMI). And today I was driving after work and I was afraid of being sleepy so I bought one of those lucozade alert drinks they're only small like the size of an actimel. I know they are full of caffeine. In about ten minutes I got a pain in my tummy and had to use the loo. So anyone any ideas is that just coincidence or am I intolerant to caffeine?

I used to get a funny reaction to coffee too, my heart raced and the blood drains from my face and I felt really sick to my stomach. It seemed to kick in all of a sudden as I was a hard-core coffee drinker before thanks to free espressos in work.

I cut it out for a few months and now can have the odd cup once in a while as long as it's not on an empty stomach. I never ever get that reaction from tea.

I thought it had that effect on most people, it's a diuretic at least

Oh yeah, coffee also induces peristalsis, which is the spasming of the bowels in preparation to 'go' :)

Tea contains a lot of caffeine as well - so it's probably not the caffeine.

But coffee does acts as a peristalsis stimulant and causes loosening of the bowel (regardless of whether is caffeinated or decaffeinated).

Yeah, if that worked, I'm be a stick insect by now.

Though I was eating in the same cafe as a bunch of fashion models, and they really do live on black coffee and fresh air. They were giving out to one girl who had put milk in her coffee. Way too fattening.

I dont really drink coffee but if i am a bit stuffed up it gets things working straight away. It has the opposite effect if you drink too much of it.

I can't drink a strong coffee if I'm out & about. Unless I've already attended to 'things' earlier in the day. I don't like having to use public toilets for that kind of visit!!
