No big surprise, but it's cool to see. Good 3D Mario is...good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

I'm not sure if I'm going to get it. I have the first one but still haven't beaten it. I'm very close to the end but I just can't drag myself back to it. I don't know why. I guess maybe I just prefer 2D Mario games.

    Wonder if it's a well deserved 10/10, or a 'Halo 3' 10/10 though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Gran Turismo, GTAIV or Bayonetta aren't worth 10 either.

SMG2 is a launch day buy for me regardless, but a 10/10 review in Edge wouldn't automatically seal the deal for me.

Possibly that they got paid to give it a high score, many gaming magazines, notably Japan's Famitsu, accept bribes.

Seeing as The Edge have only handed out twelve "10/10"s in its history this would suggest they can't be bought ....

Famitsu had given out very few, then, all of a sudden, they were handing out 40/40's left, right and center.

Yeah but it also coincides with when they started taking 'advertising money' :)

I would never trust an Edge review and think they are full of **** but I'm looking forward to this game. It will be better than 10/10 Halo 3 that's for sure.

Am i right in saying this is out on June 11?

Last time i pre-ordered a game in a shop, i managed to get it the evening before it came out. If i could get my hands on this the evening befoe the World Cup started...well that would just be swell.:p

I agree with every other ten except Halo 3 and GTA IV so this is a must-buy now! Galaxy was the only 3D Mario game I ever played to 100% and hopefully this can be equal to it.

    Blasphemy!

Not too surprised about this after reading the review last night. Super Mario Galaxy was a wonderful experience, one of the most inventive and enjoyable games I've ever played. If this does indeed do even more with the ideas and mechanics laid out by the first, well I think my mind will be blown once again.

Bayonetta on Amazon uk is only about £13 at the minute...22euro delivered to ireland:)

    Hmmm...

Any chance there might be one of those midnight launches for this?

I find Edge to give very tough and honest reviews.

Its very unlikely they take bribes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

Cant stand Edge tbh, they have an air of self importance about their reviews, as if other magazines should just wait and see what they give it, I much prefer Games TM's approach to gaming.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 554 ✭✭✭spongeman

Yeah but Games TM copied Edge's scoring system, ie 5 is average ?

Don't most places use that system? Eurogamer to name one...
    who coincidentally gave SMG2 10/10
You can hardly hold that against them

Im surprised Goldeneye did'nt get a ten ?

I would have thought that when using a marking scale between 0 (I'm guessing 0, rather than 1) and 10, 5 would be the logical definition of average. It's not like Edge invented arithmetic.

Though you do come across reviews on sites and in magazines that label games as "average" and then give them 7 out of 10 or equivalent.

The former is how it should be, if a site is giving average games 7/10 then basically anything below 4 or 5 is terrible.

3 scores between average (7/10) and perfection (10/10) isn't enough, while having 3 scores between terrible (3/10) and absolutely woeful (0/10) is pointlessly high.

    Ohh, bitchy!

It is possibly an 11/10, that is, so good it needs a whole new branch of imaginary numbers to come up with a score better than 10/10.

The game truly is a piece of jeweled perfection, a constant source of delight and surprise and capable of making any gamer, however jaded, remember what it was like as a child, playing games for the first time.
For me, that was the first time I played Battlezone and Donkey Kong in an arcade back in the day, for you it'll be something different I suppose, but rest assured Super Mario Galaxy 2 will take you there.

Pre-ordered this the other day. Will have to get the batteries charged and ready to play this :D.

The coop play with the second player looks a bit better than the first, a little luma rather that a plain star. My kids thought the original was brilliant in itself, they were happy enough collecting star bits and holding off enemies, so I think they will be delighted with that and Yoshi arriving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I got a US copy, it's fecking excellent so far, and I'm just at the end of the first galaxy as I've been really busy! I'd say that already it's got a slight edge on the first Galaxy game.

It's a great game guys. I believe it to be mario's best 3d platformer.

Unless games like super mario 64 and sunshine in this game you know EXACTLY where you're going and it's unlikely you will get lost.

The map system works too. The 10/10 scores are justified, any complaint with the game isn't worth docking it a mark.

any irish retailers doing pre order deals?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

How does the co-op play work in this game? There was not much to it in the first.

Can't wait to get my hands on this. Screw every other game in my 'currently playing' pile.

Am going to pop down to Bray town around six or seven and see if anyone is selling early.

I'm very surprised with the lack of enthusiasm around this game - every review has basically said its one of the best games they have ever played yet some people are having doubts and few people seem to be posting here about it.

If this was a release for Xbox or PS3 there would be pages and pages of people talking about it and trying to find out if someone has got it yet from any stores.

I can't wait for it and will definitely be going in tonight round 6 to see if I have any chance of getting it, and if not probably try Tesco later tonight.

Game have a collector's tin (like they did for NSMBW) and HMV have a t-shirt.

    Game's tin: http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=123365

    HMV t-shirt: http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=324;6;-1;-1;83&sku=302287

If anyone gets confirmed prices for the various retailers, please post here.
Definitely grabbing this at lunchtime tomorrow. :)

It's a little bit more invoved from the first game but the second player controls an orange luma.

They can spin mario, grab coins, grab star bits and press a and point at an enemy to stun them.

    That's about it :)

re: Prices - those of you not itching to get it in your grubby mitts tomorrow should check out this page on BleedingCool.com describing how to order it from Littlewoods at an eventual price of £24 (dropping to £20.80 if you go in for some cashback scheme as well).

Predictably no-one would sell it to me (although the girl in Smyths seemed disappointed that she had a box of them beside her but couldn't sell them!) but I got a general price idea. 45 in Smyths with loyalty card, same in Gamestop (I didn't ask if they were selling it because I'm not buying it there anyway). Xtravision was 50, but according to the worker it comes with - and I quote - 'a free controller thingie'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,024 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

    HMV is €45 iirc

It's £32 on amazon if you can wait until next week to get it.

Interesting, may take a peek tomorrow and see, even though I just bought the first SMG yesterday. Its probably a special rubber sleeve with Mario images or such.

Its pretty much just an extension of the first one. Its OK like but if you've played the first one and are expecting a big jump up, you might be dissappointed. It may as well have just been called the Mario Galaxy Extra Level Pack.

Was in Game Limerick yesterday. They have a flyer at the counter with states they will give 25% extra on trade-ins. It says they'll give 37.50 for NSMB! It also comes with a 5 euro voucher, so you could get the game for peanuts.

Are they not doing the same deal in HMV here as in England? £5 for the game if you trade in Mario Kart Wii and the wheel. I might have to hold up picking it up if they're not.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

The game is spectacular, not some mere extension, in so far as Super Mario World could have been considered an "extension" of Super Mario Bros. 3.
No, don't believe that nonsense, Super Mario Galaxy 2 adds so much to the realm of 3D platformers it tears up the rule book and creates something incredible.
The game contains more good ldeas per level than most good modern games contain in their entirety.
Buying this is a must for Wii owners and if you don't have a Wii, this game is the best reason you have to go and pick one up, it's that goodn folks.
I've been playing the NTSC version for a while now and can't get over just how much ingenuity is distilled into every level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

Yeah, but I think you need to pre-order. They also only had medium in HMV Grafton street when I was there, which is a poor selection for Gamers ;).
