Got the all clear from Zascar so here commences the Boards DJ thread.

Basically a place to let us know where you're DJing, so people can come along, help fill the night, and help people find more good nights .

I'll start things off with a night I'm running next Thursday. It's in the Bernard Shaw, and it's based around Witnail & I, for Richard E. Grant's birthday. Showing a film, then DJs, then a band called Jazzberries, and me DJing at 11. I'll be playing something like this mix.

Free in, and it should be a good night.

Facebook event here with more information.

Just in case anyone does not already know, I run a night called Laundry in the basement of Hogan's - currently its only on the last Friday of every month, but we will be announcing something else in a few months also. We are playing as Laundry DJ's at both the Life Festival and No Place Like Dome too.

About time we had a thread like this, although typical it comes along just as a big long streak of gigs starts to dry out a little!

Playing on Saturday for the Spectrum lads in Kennedy's - Subtle Audio are releasing the second LP by cult Irish pseudo-recluse Polska (he didn't know the name meant "Polish" when he picked it)

    Lineup is:

Polska - (Bassbin, Make:Shift, Kin, Subtle Audio, Inperspective)
0=0 - (Synaptic Plastic, Planet Mu)
    Code - (Subtle Audio)
Executive Steve (Reach, Ancient Ways, Rnl106.4FM)
    Donny Wang (Spectrum)

Tenner in, copies of the CD and Vinyl version on sale at cut prices. €5 for a double cd!

The new Neu! box-set looks seriously tempting!

Can't personally justify the price right now though myself.

anyone in or passing thru vancouver, i run and play at a night in a restaurant that we convert into a bar/club each friday night @ Cassis on Pender.

music varies really depending on who's playing but tis usually hiphop, house, electro, nudisco etc etc kinda stuff. not really my bag, but you have to play to the crowd and all that malarky!

free in every week, drink specials, 420 friendly and sometimes its actually good ;)

Yea Tago Mago's a classic, though my favourite is Hallogallo by Neu! (much copied, especially by Stereolab's earlier stuff check out the "Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements" LP, there's a track called jenny Ondioline which you should like) )

Very tempting, depends though on how many are pressed so will it be worth it?! Could be a serious collectors item down the road, my last big box set purchase was the 13th floor elevators Sign of The 3-Eyed Men http://www.internationalartistsrecords.com/13th_floor_elevators_sign_of_the_three_eyed_men.html

I'll start things off with a night I'm running next Thursday.

Might actually make an appearance at this to schmooze around a bit - I'll PM you if I am and we'll have a pint or something; I'll be the fella outside w/the Camberwell carrot.

Ha, it made me verify my age to watch that! Knowing the Shaw I doubt you'll be the only one there with a Carrot! That'd be great if you or a few of the lads here could come along. Just because I like it so much, I thought I'd throw up the poster.

Only night I was connected with has now been taken over by ''Girls!Girls!Girls - Dublin's only all-female DJ night'' in the POD (the shame, I know) so I'm fairly deprived of gigs atm. Just after getting an Xponent and new monitors as well...

Doing a bit of repping/shilling for Tripod starting shortly so I expect the odd slot to pop up and am doing a fair amount for Ents in UCD from August AFAIK. Hence I've gone all commercial and...dirty recently. Exams finished on Monday so I'll be hitting the production/remix side of things like a bauld thing ASAP.

If anyone's around the Munster area...

    Cork: Liquid Lounge: Marlboro Street
Thursdays: Liam Lavelle and Myself: house and techno (with bits of electro and dubstep) in room two. €5 in and €2 cans makes it all the more worthwhile.
Fridays Fortnightly: Electric Underground (think we won that Irish dance music awards malarky the other week as best small clubnight???) James Holden next week, I'll be warming up, for instance. Monster X, Ben Pest and Prince Kong last week, I think it was. Noisy stuff.

Does this get a lot of students in? At first glance I thought 'savage', but then I started thinking of places in Dublin like Fibbers (rocker bar).

Fibbers is a good auld spot, nice and smelly! €3 bottles of Paulaner keep me happy. The pints are rotten though, the smokin area is good craic. Overall, a nice vibe. I dont know of any other pub in dublin with a similar messiness to it since Mcgruders closed.

Yeah it does. I'm not the best placed to judge how busy it is in comparison with the competition, because I don't actually go out on student nights any more but we'd capacity by 00.30 or 00.45 for the first few months of college term, which is about as much as we can ask for I guess.

The management are great: they wanted an actual underground music room, to augment their student night's normal pop music room. They were willing to stick with us while the students came to terms with certain concepts (no pop music, no flashy lights, darkened room, few genre changes, vinyl) and within a few months other places had copied the format. Students need options too.

I wont pretend it's glamorous, but it's actual underground music, on a good soundsystem (we bring in a big system every week).

    There's pictures on here:

and there's live recordings on my podcast thing http://beko.podomatic.com/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,350 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

    Haha thanks.
A lot of our customers are sold on the simple idea of having a choice.
Even more are sold on having a big night out on €20. It'd be an ideal scenario if the idea of having different music in different rooms was adopted more. It's the management that deserve the praise there tbh. We never thought it would work, and we never thought they'd stick with it. So fair play to them.

13th Floor Elevators - very psychedelic!

Yeah the Neu! boxset is very tempting - they have it in Tower and the weight of it alone suggests lots of nice contents. No mention anywhere as to how many it's limited to, it does state 'very special limited edition' on boomkat but that could be 500 copies, which in today's terms is probably a lot for a box of Krautrock vinyl!

    Forgot about this thread!

    Two gigs this week:

    29491_428916221154_769061154_5542962_5397078_n.jpg

^ Kaboogie's K Club night has moved to the venue formerly known as Le Cirk on Dame Street - Bonz and Myself will be rolling down tomorrow to lash out some proper grown-up DnB, free in, open late. Should be a giggle.

    http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=116724901699782&ref=mf

^ Sunday night Tribal Ireland are launching some arts initiative in the Melody Bar, don't know much more apart from that, they rang me out of the blue and asked me to play, but I understand it will be going on till late. Drop down and say hello. Haven't a clue what time I'm on at because I was a bit tipsy when they rang me...

Running a new fortnightly night in the Bernard Shaw starting this Thursday. It's called Forward/Slash, and the general plan is to get a DJ I really like in every week, and then have some good bands as well.

No worries mate, there'll be a good few over the summer, it's every second Thursday. Won't be around Friday seeing as I'm playing the Button Factory, but I've been meaning to catch one of your sets for ages, so I must come to the next one.

If anyone happens to be knocking about Temple Bar tonight, stick your head into the Purty Kitchen - playing in a mix off for the launch night of OpenFM to try and win meself a radio slot / festival slot.

Shaking your tail feather like its going out of fashion purely optional.

After my external harddrive went with a meticulously crafted tribal house/minimal set I had been obsessing over for the last few weeks went headfirst onto the floor and started clicking thanks to me dog crossing over the USB lead(with me whatpeopleplay/beatport account and gmail password) I ended up having to throw some commercial Mark Knight etc.. together on the fly playing at half nine to an empty room. This is not to mention me having to re-install the Xponent drivers IN THE DJ BOX and restart me laptop (cheers M-Audio).

Lovely if sparse crowd and some seriously sensational Deep House/Techno DJs playing to an equally empty room all night (Kudos to Deckno and Fanning, top blokes)... But there we are, nice to be out playing in somewhere a bit different in Temple Bar anyway!

Ah sh1t sorry to hear that Jimi - computer issues suck balls.

It sucks when you've put all the effort in and there are fuk all people there. Promoting in the Dublin market is pretty dam tough these days, too bloody many in it and not enough punters. Bring back the good old days lol...

If anyone happens to be around and either working with Ableton or thinking about it or just interested in hearing a pretty broad mix of genres then here you go.

I'll (miXile) be taking part in the 22:00 live improv jam. Should be interesting to see how my Australian field recording based ambient works with some techno and house and other tales of mystery and imagination :)
The Ableton Live user Group - Dublin are holding their next event in SPACE54, Smithfield (Beside the Luas), Dublin 7
    Friday, 18 June 2010 at 19:00 - around 00:00

This month we are bringing you the digitally downloadable electronic-love that is Live-beats III !!!

1900_First up we are kicking off with a workshop on making a track in Ableton Live and how to take that and perform it in a liveset. And all in just over an hour :o

2000_Bringing our (experimental) new Open Mic slot. Local musicians & producers are welcome come play some of their own tunes.

2030_After that we've got Bantum aka Ruairi Lynch firing some of his carefully crafted electro breaks your way, not to be missed.

2100_7800beats is testing the bass bins with something deeper, detroit, housey and peppered with techno flavours.

2200_Something a bit special this month. Unrehearsed, live, (scary!), on the fly mash up of ambient, acid, beats and baselines! Its going to be Flynn vs miXile vs Mirolo, so lets see what they can come up with!

2300_We have a special guest up from Cork this month. Drokkr is going to round the evening with a little bit of bass. Bristo' flavor, dubstep, breakcore and maybe a few surprises!

Eye Candy: We gots visuals now! woohoo! Holly, Liam and Sean will be there on the night providing live visuals

As usual all the music on the night is made and performed by the guys themselves. So come on down for a taste of the tunes of the town and bring your dancin' feet!

Feel free to bring your own food and drinks down too. It's €5 in on the night to pay for the PA, Venue and lights.

For anyone down around Cork on Friday night, this should be a most excellent way to pass an evening.
I'll (miXile) be heading down to do a live performance of field recording based ambient electronica with sounds from South East Queensland, Australia with the chance of some subtle beats towards the end.
    http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/event.php?eid=131259776886207
    Ctrl Alt Delete (pt.9)

Live electronic music from local producers (Cork & surrounding areas)

Upstairs @ the vineyard, patrick street cork, kicking off at 8pm

    5 EURO ENTRY

    the bill:

COHERX (dubstep beats without the drama)
    http://soundcloud.com/coherx
Returning for his 3rd time with us, sound engineer & top producer Coherx has gained considerable interest this year. His set contains a rare honest quality and a twisted sense of foreboding.
Basically, it just gets us going.
He never fails to disappoint with tunes to make a pig blush and a face to make boyfriends jealous. Really can't wait to see him give it socks on the night.

    LASERFACE (experimental breakbeat-techno-trip hop-dnb)
    http://www.facebook.com/laserfacemusic
Tomás Daly aka Laserface will be churning out his usual strictly analogue hardware set with the sole intention of avoiding a genre tag like the plague.
After playing drums with various bands over the years, he relishes the challenge of never using a laptop onstage...opting for a drum machine, a sampler & some synthesizers instead.
Visual Diva Claire Guerin will be providing visual delights during Daddylaser's set.

    SKIRMISH (hard house/technoporn)
    http://www.myspace.com/skirmishcorkcity
Cork's favourite son Ken Fitzgerald will be playing with us for the first time..and hopefully not last. His pumping choons filled with oohs and aahs will leave you with a stupid smile on your face and an awkward stiffness in your walk.

    MIXILE (ambient sound art)
    http://www.mixile.com/
after spending the best part of a year traveling the australian outback to collect sounds for his new album, Noosa Sunrise, miXile is not an act to be missed. check out his website. his new album is available to purchase there.

    NARWHALS (ambient bliss)
Jonathan Deasy aka Narwhals plays with us once again. Recently played alongside The Quiet Club and Claire Guerin in probably the most perfect collaboration since Bonham & Jones.
He has no tracks available for you to listen to online though..the inconsiderate bastard.

    WIFE (dubsteppy beats)
    http://soundcloud.com/wife
Playing his first gig..... with us and beyond...James Kelly aka WIFE will be playing some bassy dubby stuff. really looking forward to hearing what he has planned. the track on his page is excellent

Had to ask to be put on a bit earlier since Krust and Mala are finishing up downstairs and there's no way in hell I'm missing them, but this should be great craic!

If you get your bums in earlier (around 8/9) Street Justice are doing their usual bit of standup and chilling out inside in the Mezz. I'm knocking around for the night so say hi!

Running another night in the Bernard Shaw, headline DJ is Louis Hop from ColorTV who a few of you know. Hugh Cooney - from his infamous YouTube videos - is doing a comedy set of some sort before that, and I'll be before him again. Anyone who's around pop down, always free in.

If anyone's around tomorrow night, I'm playing a dub, disco and generally 115-128 bpm bit of something different set.
