and why not :) COYFS !!!!

Because we don't have £80m for the transfer fee, and would have to break our wage structure to pay the wages.

    Next!

I know this might start a little early, but since we have confirmed our CL spot, all the talk on tv is of the calibre of player we can attract. so whta do lads thinks? where do we need to improve to progress for next season? I think the full back positions, possibly another centre if King can only play part time, another mid, and if we secured Guddy and added another striker. I think Pav did ok, but i be very wary of his up and down form.

This is going to be a tough transfer season. Defoe was great for all but the last 10 games or so, where he stopped scoring goals. I didn't think he was great again last night, and the problem is that we need someone who is going to score 25 league goals in the season. All the other top 4 teams have that (Van Persie, Rooney, Drogba, Torres) and if we're serious, we need that too. Who do we get rid of though? I like Pav - he's a genuinely two-footed striker, rare enough these days, though he blows so hot and cold that he can be frustrating. And I like Gudjonson as well, though should we be holding on to him?

Outside that, I'd love another really strong CB, or for Bassong to mature and make that position his own. RB needs to be sorted, though in fairness Kaboul has been excellent there and seems to almost be growing into the role. Backup GK needs to be sorted too.

So basically I think we need one absolutely brilliant midfielder or striker, and cover elsewhere.

i think we all pretty much say the same thing

    backup goalie

right back (bennie is ok at left)

backup CB while king grooms bassong to be his natural sucessor

    cover in CM

    World class striker

we need someone like torres who will go to old trafford and score, that kind of striker

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I'd love a world class striker. I like Pav, and have a new found respect for Crouch (who was fantastic last night), but we need a Torres/Rooney type player, who'll get 20+ goals a season. Could also do with another great midfielder, but i'd be happy with Modric and Palacios/Hudd as long as they keep their form up.

What i'm most happy about, is the players we really need to keep have a fantastic reason to stay now. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL!! :P

crouch was outstanding but we know he is only that good in certain kinds of games. he is a great squad man but he not world class

Priority has got to be to retain our current squad, ie Bale Modric Lennon etc..

    Maybe Torres would fancy London

Hwe picked Liverpool over Man U/Chelsea when he came first, why not Spurs over Chelsea now.

Worth breaking the bank for Torres

    Well said that man.

I think RB and CB should be priorities, but I don't think we will see a new CB unless we make it to the CL group stages.

Pacy cover for Lennon on the right would be nice, I think Bentley might be off if the right offer comes in. He might make do with Jenas out there, I'm not sure.

I'd be surprised if Eidur stays on, so we will need another striker...now is the time to get the quality goalscorer we need, though who that is I don't know.

Oh, and decent cover for Gomes is a must.

    Dreamland I think,

Although I think we could get a couple of decent players from them.

What about babel or glen Johnston?

For the two reasons I posted above, plus he will challenge for trophies at Chelses (and be guaranteed CL Group stage football at a bare minimum) Do you think the chance to work with his fellow countryman as manager and play for a side that were recent CL winners might have helped make his mind up on his last move?

Let's not lose the run of ourselves fellas.

What about Santa Cruz? Easy to forget but he looked pretty special before he followed the money.

The last thing I want is some merc like Robinho coming in thinking he owns the place!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭Wendell Gee

I could'nt agree more with Ronan. The priority must be to retain our key players. Now Bale looks likely to extend, and Lennon and Thudd have been signed up, Modric is next.
Goalie to back up Gomez the most obvious need. After that we need to evaluate all the players we have, and decide on Jenas, Bentley and Pav. Then there are the players on loan - Keane, Hutton, O Hara, Dos Santos, and Taarabt. If we get 3rd or win CL qualifier, it could be argued that we need a deeper squad, so some of them could come in. Then there are the youngsters Walker, Naughton, Bostock, Obika et al.
In terms of buying in, would bellamy or Pienaar walk into the first 11 if everyone is fit- no. Would they even get into the 16-18 match squad? We need to be judicious in who we bring in. We also need to above all trust Harry's eye for a player, and Levy's hard nose to close a deal.
As an option to Crouch, how about Doyle? Hard working, leads the line, never trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭Wendell Gee

    As we stand
    squad for 2011
Gomez Cudicini? Alnwick? Walker x Need a goalie
RB Corluka Kaboul Hutton ?Walker? Naughton?
    LB BAE Bale O Hara?
CB King Dawson Bassong Kaboul Woodgate? Corluka Thudd (emergencies only) Walker? Naughton? Derivte x
    RM Lennon Bentley? Krenjcar
LM Bale Modric Kranjcar GDS? O Hara?
CM Thudd Palacios Modric Sandro O Hara? Eidur?
ST Defoe Crouch Pav? Keane? Eidur? GDS?
    Not bad, is it?

Would agree with the Bentley piece, if Harry was offered 8/10m, he'd prob let him go. Potential is there to take in a decent few quid in sales this summer, if the likes of Keane, Gio, OHara and Hutton all leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭Wendell Gee

Forgot Jenas. Sorry JJ- seemed buzzed at ft last night, hardly a write off, but definately a question mark over his future.

It could fund the signing of a top striker, maybe Huntelaar.

27 or 28m if you add bently and I'm sure near enough 100k a week in wages between them.

Could get a he'll of a forward between them.

    £100k a week?

If you're throwing Bentley in there I'd put it at closer to £200k, Keane is on very good money (IIRC around £80k, and Bentley and Hutton would be on at least the same between them)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭mushykeogh

I think left back has to be a priority.BAE has done well but is always a liability. Will the club change its wage structure now were in the qualifiers? If not we are hampered when looking to get players in.
What of the new stadium? whats the latest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

    Keane is on 80k? Jesus!

Point remains though, I for one would prefer we try our luck with a superstar at 200k a week then have the 4 fringe players Ronan was talking about.

Although I still would like to keep O'Hara TBH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,827 ✭✭✭Mr. Guappa

I would agree that we need to look for a Right Back and a Striker, plus a back-up keeper, but the main thing is to keep what we have, we didn't add too many last summer and I think that continuity showed last night against a City side who looked disjointed and like a team of individuals.

3/4 in and 3/4 out would do me nicely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Cant get this (completely outlandish) transfer out of my head.

As people are saying- ship out the lads who arent even in the squad at the minute plus jj and im going to throw in crouch as well. Pool that money and their wages for Torres.

I no its absolutely ridiculous but i cant help myself thinking about it.

On a slightly more realisitc note- Goalie, Right/centre back. With sandro coming in id be happy enough with that.- Plus torres of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

    Hatch99 wrote: »

Hmm maybe champions league pull might keep him happy as a squad player. Hard to know really like he surely knows he's not gonna be an England player!

I think larry has something up his sleve myself. He's not exactly known for not buying players!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭keane=cock

i think keane will prob be shipped out in the summer(unfortunitly-for me, i like him) just for the reason i heard he had som,e clause in his contract when he came back from liverpool that he had to be joint highest earner at the club. this came about when we were interested in van nistelroy. not sure how true this is maybe someone can confirm or banish this rumour?????

but i think it would hinder any major signings of people demanding 100k a week wages would it not? id imaging torres would look for something in the region of that. how certain are we even torres will leave liverpool. he always stated he was happy there.

I don't see the point in de-stabilising the team we have at present by going out on a mass spending spree.

Bring in maybe 2 or 3 quality players at most, however more importantly is that we keep the excellent core of players who have stepped up to the mark and shown their quality this season. Gomes, Bale, Dawson, King, Modric, Palacios, Huddlestone, Lennon, Defoe have all been legends this season. Add to that the major contributions from Bentley, Krancjar, Crouch, BAE and Crouch then I really don't see that we need to go out and break the bank.

What we have currently, is a team that play as a team. There's spirit there. No one individual who thinks he's too good to be playing for us (e.g. Berbatov, Carrick etc etc.).

No doubt, we'll be tested over the summer for the likes of Modric but I hope to god the board stays strong and resists the approaches from the predators like Man U and Pool etc. when it comes to it. If we do, then there's every chance that we can be right up there next season in the fight to consolidate another top four finish. If not then this years finish will go down as a 'one season wonder'.

We're going in the right direction, let's not feck it up like years gone by.

    COYS

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,661 ✭✭✭mickman

i dont think modric will be tempted. he is very young and will stay for 12 more months to see how we get on in the champs league

i think the important thing we have is the team spirit, no one thinks (anymore) that they are bigger than the club. it was great to see fancy dan david bentley over joyed the last night , jenas was also jumping around the place. that has never happened before. the players thought they were bigger than the club. i think when you think of a club the first thought that comes into your head should be the manager and not a player, this shows that there is a team there and not a collection of individuals. when i think of

    madrid - ronaldo / kaka
    united - ferguson
    chelsea - drogba
    liverpool - torres
    spurs - redknapp

harry is firmly in charge of the club and dosent take any crap from any player and look at what has happened. we are a club going in the right direction

I think your wrong mate!! It's not all that counts. The fella is a bit odd, lets be honest! You don't want anyone in the squad who is a bit of loose cannon and could make things difficult for management in the changing room etc when things don't go his way.....ie Berbatov!! We don't want players of his character we want players who want to be there for the right reasons not for money etc.... we'll excuse BAE!!

    Steve Ireland - no way.
I also can't see Torres going to us even if we put a bid in for him.

I'd prefer to have the wage sturcture in place versus paying 100K a week for a player who may or may not show up on match day.

One 'special' signing will be enough for Harry Redknapp

    • Spurs secure Bale for four years
    • Manager believes squad is strong

Gareth-Bale-006.jpg Gareth Bale has signed a four-year deal with Tottenham. Photograph: Tony Marshall/Empics Sport

Harry Redknapp has told Tottenham Hotspur supporters not to expect the club to make many signings over the summer because his squad is already strong enough to mount challenges in both the Premier League and the Champions League next season. He did, however, suggest that he could venture into the transfer market to sign "one really special player".
Tottenham also announced that they have pre-empted any attempt by other clubs to sign one of their best performers of the season by agreeing a new four-year deal with the left-back Gareth Bale.
To stress how strong he believes his squad is, Redknapp pointed to the calibre of substitutes that he was able to select for Wednesday's victory at Manchester City, when the Spurs bench included internationals such as Wilson Palacios, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Sébastien Bassong.
His optimism is increased by the fact that Sandro, the 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder for whom Spurs paid £6m to Internacional last month, will arrive over the summer. The manager said the four players out on loan – Robbie Keane (Celtic), Alan Hutton (Sunderland), Jamie O'Hara (Portsmouth) and Kyle Naughton (Middlesbrough) – are all in his plans for the campaign ahead. Redknapp even sounded hopeful that Jonathan Woodgate would be fit for the start of next season. The centre-back is still in Australia receiving treatment on the groin injury that has kept him out of action since October.
"It's difficult to improve this squad," Redknapp said. "If Woodgate comes back fit, we've got good options everywhere. I wouldn't lose any sleep if we don't do anything this summer. But if we could find a really special player, someone who could take the team to another level like, for example, the way [Fernando] Torres did to Liverpool, then we'll try to do that. It might only be one player – one expensive player – but then we might go for it. But I'm certainly not chasing [chairman] Daniel [Levy] for transfer funds and I don't want four or five players – I wouldn't know what to do with them."
Redknapp, who has been named Barclays manager of the season, said one person who certainly will not be seen during Tottenham's Champions League adventures next season is his wife. "No chance, I'm very superstitious," he said, explaining that the only match she attended this season was the FA Cup semi-final that Spurs surprisingly lost to Portsmouth.
That setback may have had an unexpected benefit, as Redknapp says it gave his players extra impetus in the race for fourth spot in the Premier League. "I think if we'd won the semi-final we might not have finished fourth," he said. "People might have started looking forward to the Cup final but instead they started thinking we've done well all year and now we might end up with nothing and that made them come back strongly."

I'd be delighted with one expensive signing really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 DJ Defoe

Fantastic post but seriously, why are we still paying for Woodgate? Hes been gone almost all season and we got here without him! I would not be joking when i say i forgot he was even our player! Cut him loose ffs!!!

i am a strong believer that joe cole and carrick and bellamy will be at spurs next season. did you see when harry was walking off the pitch after city, bellamy came up and shook his hand and there was something there i thought, some kind of unspoken word that said "harry, make a bid and ill come to the lane"

if we got those 3 players and a striker, get rid of jenas , keane and bentley and we will challenge for the title next season

    Totally disagree.

We seem to have a happy and united dressing room at the moment, Bellamy would disrupt that straight away. While he is a very good player he has caused trouble almost everywhere he has been and he has no loyalty at all.

Joe Cole is too injury prone, he was top quality for 18 months under Mourinho but otherwise he seems to have lived off this reputation he got as a youngster at West Ham. I'm not sure that he is an improvement over Modric/Kranjcar/Lennon/Bale, even Bentley.

As for Carrick, please no. Hudd has come on leaps and bounds this season, he has a good passing range and gets about the pitch more than Carrick ever did.

We've also been linked with Benayoun and Pienaar. I'd like to see us get Pienaar as a replacement for Bentley, he seems to put in a performance each week, while I think Benayoun goes missing in a lot of games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

See that's what it comes down too, who can come into midfield who is a step up from bale, Lennon, luka and hudd.

Maybe joe cole when fit and top of his game but I would take bale ahead of him now.

I think a top top striker is the way forward. Someone big who Defoe can work off but is leathal to boot.

I say never sell crouch for his heroics but he is not a long or even medium term option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Leinstersqspur

    Carrick no way...
Cole? Harry would definitely get the best out of him, if fit!

The body language between HR and Bellamy suggested HR was saying "tough luck Craig should have joined the mighty yiddos!!"

He'll be 31 in July so I don't see him having much to offer long term? As for throwing his toys out of the pram, Bentley and Pav all man managed into performing for the club so I wouldn't see that as an obstacle....

By 'one special player' I'm guessing Harry is would be in the market for one player to galvanise the attack, who can unlock the bus parking teams when its needed Stoke, Wolves etc. Would have to be the Calibre of Tevez, Torres, Rooney, Drogba....?

Im sure Levy and Harry will have a shortlist of possibilities, exciting times at WHL!!
