Was there not a thread on here recently where someone stated that whatever way the law is over here, cats are classified as wild animals or vermin or something and not actually as people's property in the same way as dogs are? I'm not condoning it, Jesus that's just wrong, I'm just asking

Ah. Well in that case, i'm glad the vile man got a criminal record.

WTF? Cop yourself on. Hows a muzzle going to sort that out? My dogs are already confined and under control. So I should also muzzle them IN MY OWN GARDEN because some tosser lets his cats roam free all day? Good plan Batman. Maybe I should get them all debarked aswell? Or maybe just go all the way and have all four of them put to sleep for the sake of the poor ickle puddy cats next door?

Cats can be wild or domestic. A wild cat can be destroyed because they spread disease, but it must be done by a vet afaik.

My cat was attacked by a dog once. The owner told me to fcuk off when I confronted him about it. I got on to the RSPCA and they fined him 500 euro for having his dog off the lead and for cruelty to animals. He refused to pay it so they destroyed the dog instead. Not saying it's right but it was his choice to sacrifice his dog for the sake of 500 euro.

The reason a cat doesn't need a licence is because they are not a danger to humans. It doesn't mean you can kill or torture them.

My cousin lost most of his sight when he was young due to paracites in cat poo

This is called toxoplasmosis, a parasite commonly found in cat feces.
Cat owners conveniently forget about this when claiming how harmless their animals are.
My advise is to email minister@environ.ie and lobby for cat controls similar to that placed on dog owners, that's what I have done.

    it's true but it's a myth that it's a cat parasite.
Toxoplasmosis comes from bacteria in raw meat, which yea cats can sometimes eat, but that would be wild cats you're talking about there. As I've said if you bring a wild cat to a vet it will be destroyed unless an owner is found.

Maybe a need in a very densely populated area. I can't see any need for this in the countryside. If you have farmyards attracting mice and rats there's nothing better than a few cats. Unless you people on the animal board think using poison is a better way of life. I don't understand that mentality.
I've had cats all my life, they sit on the car, and have NEVER left the tiniest mark. Metal isn't pleasant to scratch...

How come? Do domestic cat's not get the same if they eat raw meat?

This is true. Yes it is found in cat feces (AND other animals) but the most common way to pick up Toxoplasmosis is via raw meat.

I know this as I have Toxoplasmosis, I've suffered from it in the past and have spent many hours and days in hospitals dealing with specialists.

Yes but there is no raw meat in my garden, nor is their animal droppings of any other variety other than cats.
The only risk of a member of my family contracting toxoplasmosis is from the
ample amounts of cat 5hit in my garden that the neighbourhood cats deposit on a daily basis.

A domestic cat will not eat raw meat unless you feed it to it or if it's neglected and starving and happens upon a piece. It's possible the kid ate some raw meat directly but many will believe the myth and jump to the conclusion the kid got it from cat poo.

Or maybe you're a bad cook. I can jump to conclusions too.

AghH! the neighbours cat is prowling around my flowerbeds as i type!

  • Registered Users Posts: 374 ✭✭STForSale

It is not a myth, contact with cat's feces IS a cause of toxoplasmosis infection if the cat is carrying the disease.
    I wasn't aware I had made a conclusion?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭20goto10

It's a myth that it is a cat parasite and that all cat poo causes it or even that cat poo is the main cause. Read the post above from someone who has had it.

If you want sone constructive advice, there's things you can do to stop the cats going in your garden. The best would be to chuck some water over it. Get yourself a super soaker and blast the hell out of it. It might take a couple of goes but the cat will get the message.

I've tried all the deterrants, these things cost money and I have better things to do.
Why is this my problem, the onus should be on the owner of the animal to behave responsibly, as is the case with dogs.

A dog craps in my garden, the owner either cleans it up or faces a fine.
A cat craps in my garden.......

Why is this so hard for you to understand?

Are you suggesting Im not considerate to my neighbours? Did I state that my cats go roaming into to the neighbours gardens. I said I dont lock them in the whole time.

Clearly it is your problem. A cat owner is not responsible for it's cats poo nor should they be. You cannot take a cat for a walk on a lead. They're different animals. You dont get it that's fine. Ignorance is not a good enough reason to enforce dog laws onto cats.

  • Registered Users Posts: 374 ✭✭STForSale

    Ignorance?
All I can say is send the email off people, this situation and the attitude of above poster is not acceptable to me, nor should it be to you.

yes but a domesticated cat would have a high percentage of his/her intake via cat food from your local shop's.....which i believe is precooked.

if there were no cats in the neighborhood i would think that you might get an even greater disease from the abundance of rats who pee everywhere they go inc. your furniture on your patio and can even squeeze into a very small hole into any house, etc

So thats it? Youre answere is it's a cat, it can crap everywhere, what can you do?!

I think I'll get a pet badger or better yet, a pet elephant and let it roam in my neighbours gardens. Sure it's a wild animal so it $hitting everywhere isn't my problem

I have seen people walking cats on leads (looks pretty ridiculous tbh) and there's a difference between ignorance and stating that it's just wrong that a DOMESTICATED animal OWNED by someone, has the right to go into other peoples property and crap and it's not the owners problem. If cats where confined to their owners gardens, this would solve the problem. I don't see whats hard to understand or ignorant about that opinion. Yes they are different animals but no other pets roam free like they do. If my on leash dog walked through your garden, pooped and scraped a bit of loose soil over the top of it, would that be ok with you?

    have you tried lion poop?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭20goto10

No other animals roam like they do because no other animal is a cat. The facts are they are clean animals and bury their poo. If they were going around causing toxoplasmosis then there would be something done about it. But the fact is it's total bs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 374 ✭✭STForSale

Replace the cat 5hit with a bigger cat's 5hit, ehhh, no?
but I am intrigued, do go on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭20goto10

They also have a commercial purpose to protect agricultural land from vermin. How does that work if the farmer had to follow it around with a pooper scooper?

a cat will in no way poop in a garden that has the scent of a lion and the easiest way to do this is ask a friendly zoo keeper for some lion poop! google it

there are lots of animals that roam like cats if alowed to so that argument falls flat on it's face

I have often cleared cat poo from my crandmothers path way

The fact is it is not total bs and health boards have spent alot of money
over the years warning about about it .

    Thanks

Why so many animal haters on the pet board? I've never met a single person who objects to cats. I find this discussion weird.
