This is actually quite interesting. I am dying to hear about some of the customs and traditions. Just said that if an immediate member of the family dies, the rest of them cannot attend any celebrations for a year!

I have to say, this is quite good. TV3 have really improved on their documentaries in recent months.

It's a good insight into traveller life. I didn't know about many of these customs 'til now.

Yeah I'm watching it.... How big does a wedding dress have to be? Now when and if I get married, yeah I'd like a big dress, but not THAT big, and certainly not a 22st one!

Didn't say they were, but whenever they're mentioned there's always someone who cries racism/discrimination.

I'm watching it, quiet interesting. You know what the sham meant when he said all of Tuam was related. How they can afford to throw the lavish weddings are a matter of hearsay and rumour, but I'm not going to start them on here!!

Henry is a brilliant reporter, he can ask the questions we would all love to ask and he's not embarrassed to ask them, good show, i can't believe the girls get married so young and they said the reception at the wedding is a big match making event no wonder there are so many rows at these weddings.

Do they honestly think they look good?
    Especially the yoke getting married.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,996 ✭✭✭✭billymitchell

Some of them actually are fairly pretty looking, like any other wedding. Fashion may not be to everybodys taste, but its their day, so they can dress whatever way they like.

    Yeah, shame on you OP!
Why it was only yesterday that a charming traveller lady read my palm, sold me some lucky heather, sharpened my knives AND gave me change from a fiver!

This is an old Catholic tradition, not a Traveller tradition.

Did anyone notice the expensive looking furniture in the mobile home/chalet? Will he ask them how they can afford these things and expensive weddings?

Cringeworthy. I was praying they wouldn't show my house there. Came close a few times but thankfully they didn't.

I would also like to back up Lee and Red Leper by saying that we are not all related!

There has been a traveller wedding every week for the past three weeks. I was beginning to think I was living in Hollywood with all of the hummers and limo's around...

Won't answer that here...but to freak ya out. I know who ya are!

I'll give ya a clue as to who I am, I was the one badgering your dad about the ladies soccer club and used to play with the lads when I was younger. Was out with your mam, dad and the Corbetts on Sunday.

Anyway, on topic. I hate these sort of programs. One woman there saying "ya need to get to know us before you can judge". I don't want to get to know ye if I can't walk up my own street without having one of your smart assed relations verbally abusing me.

Slighly annoyed that I can't fathom who you are but I'm sure you won't go stalking me or anything :P

Yea I agree, they want to be acknowledged properly but do nothing to help themselves be so.

Haha, I think you go to college with my cousin but he doesn't know that I know of ya! I'm a big United fan, surely that helps?!

There is some lovely travellers out there that I have great time for, but the majority really don't help their own case.

Wow! I'm a bit shocked at the hatred. I thought it was a fascinating and worthwhile insight.

It's not hatred. It's...how do you explain it?

Everyday I could walk up that road and I'd have some twat shouting at me.

The road has houses that are only 10 years old, fine gardens in the back of them and what have they done? Broken all the windows in the uninhabited houses, have horses in the gardens and broken toys strewn everywhere. The windows of the houses have been boarded up after that program was done. There is a distinct lack of respect for the area by these people and people who have mortgages on the street like my parents who put work into the upkeep of the houses are being disrespected.

Yet there is about 5 new Ford Transit vans up there.

I don't hate them. They are human like the rest of us. I just find it hard to give some of them the respect they don't give us.

Ah, you said it yourself, gotta stay on topic! I like to keep my anonymity on the interwebz! At least on boards anyways! Don't worry, i'm nobody close tya anyways!! Just know who ye are!! :)

ANYWAYS, as "mars bar" said, it's not really a hatred towards the travellers, it's hard to describe and this could easily turn into another "what's the problem with tuam" thread if we ain't careful. I don't hate the travelling community at all but it really is hard to give them a chance...with the way they treat the town.

Gilmartin road is an absolute mess and is a blemish on the town, I mean no offense or disrespect whatsoever to you mars bar, I know you live near there & I know plenty of others who live there too that aren't too blame. But a trip down that road is certainly an experience...

But it's in an absolutely appalling state and it really wouldn't take much to fix if the travelers actually made the effort and cleaned up after them.
They say they don't like being discriminated against, or people being prejudiced towards them, which is understandable, but it's hard to question reality.

The thing is, they're not all bad. There's a majority of them that are as sound as the next person. They're usually all chat in shops and genuinely nice, friendly people.

But there are many others that are just disrespectful, and act as if they own this town. On rare nights you might see a mini drink-feulled famly-feud between themselves outside Supermacs(not a regular occurence of course, but just an example) where gangs of them (aged 18-60, it's really a sight to see..) would literally stand up and start squarin up each other on the road without a care for anyone else, even the guards won't go near them. Within minutes they'd have dispersed and disappeared, but really, it's the rough few that give the town the bad name.

Sorry my post is a bit all over the place, it's hard to put my feelings into words about them! I've great pride in living in Tuam and just hate the stereotypes and negative opinions people have of the town for silly reasons! I don't wanna appear hateful or come off as a bit of an ass. Just expressing my opinion of course!
