It's a fairly small production rig to be honest so can't see if having much of an impact on the supply of oil globally.

Why don't they torpedo the pipe leaking the oil instead of waiting around for ideas for the next 3 months while the area gets ruined.

What would torpedo'ing the pipe do?

    Sieze BP Petition.

A petition to get the US Government to seize and freeeze all assets of BP and hold them in a trust to help those effected by this ecological disaster.

    http://www.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=SeizeBP

I'm not sure that would be legal. Would strike me as being an ex post facto action, and thus prohibited by the US Constitution. They can pass a new law for future events, but effectively enacting a punishment for an incident already done is going to be questionable.

Oil Slick in the Gulf of Mexico

On Saturday, June 19, 2010, oil spread northeast from the leaking Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil appears as a maze of silvery-gray ribbons in this photo-like image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.

The location of the leaking well is marked with a white dot. North of the well, a spot of black may be smoke; reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say that oil and gas continue to be captured and burned as part of the emergency response efforts.

Jesus. That's unreal. Why doesnt the US get the best people who can deal with this, throw out BP, get the military involved(navy deep subs etc) and cap the damn thing. Then send BP the bill.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but leaked internal documents show that the current estimate is actually 100,000 barrels a day being still leaked into the ocean.

    Sere here: http://www.consumerenergyreport.com/2010/06/20/internal-document-bp-estimates-spill-rate-up-to-100000-bpd/

Seriously, they should have nuked the damn thing (like the Russians suggested and have done themselves a few times) ages ago.
“Right from the beginning, BP was either lying or grossly incompetent. First they said it was only 1,000. Then they said it was 5,000 barrels. Now we’re up to 100,000 barrels,” Markey said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

"This document raises very troubling questions about what BP knew and when they knew it," says Congressman Ed Markey.

Markey said that the company submitted the documents to Congress at a time when the leak was estimated at only 5,000 barrels a day, and BP told congressmen that the worst case scenario would be 60,000 barrels a day.

They already have the best people, even brought in people from rival companies aswell as a hydrogen bomb expert, one plan was to use a bomb to stop the leak however this wasn't possible in the gulf. Discovery had a good inside documentary last night about, they really are trying everything they possibly can.

i am no specialist but why cant they just pump a load of sand and concret into the hole and fill it up?

They tried a variation of that using other materials.

    They failed.

They tried that with a mix of sand and seawater and that didn't work, then they put junk in to it to try and clog it, literally golf balls and all sorts of stuff and that didn't even slow it.

It is the worst disaster in my lifetime, and possibly will be the worst in history.
The actual volume of oil is unknown, but fairly accurate estimates put
it at 40-50 thousand barrels a day. That is colossal. Unbelievable.
I don't read about it now, as it is very depressing and was avoidable too.

Biggins: I see your post that estimates it at 100k a day leakage. Yes, I saw this
    too earlier today. Scary

was listenning this morning to the business show on newstalk breakfast...there is a serious chance of BP filing for chapter 11 due to the cost of this if they cant control it within the next 3 months the company will collapse

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,019 ✭✭✭✭walshb

That is very sad, and very disturbing. A hell of a lot of peoples live affected already.
The cost of this will never be known, you cannot put a monetary price
    on this.

I passed by Biloxi last Friday and those beaches are gorgeous. I heard when I got back to Ireland that the oil had come in them by Sunday.

This area had to suffer Katrina too.

Humans have that most dangerous thing... a little knowledge.

Theres an interesting thread in CT on the subject and that it is worse than they say it is.

I well believe a lot of it is covered up and suppressed by the US Government and the media.

The US have already declined help from 13 nations including Iran who would have more experience in this technology than most other countries being the 3rd largest producer in the world.

i think its a problem that all countries should be helping deal with.Regardless of the usa turning down there help, its not a usa issue its a world one if it gets out of controle. Shame we cant plop down some giant walls to section it of from the rest of the oceans to stop it spreading time's like this we need super man but all we have is eh... bp man.

I just keep thinking about the damage done to the sea life and everything people just going on about the oil . I saw some thing on the news that sharks and other sea life were leaving the area in masses.

They got lucky this week: Hurricane Alex is only a Cat 1, going to make landfall well to the west, so the spill area is affected only by high seas. Which is bad enough, but this Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be well above average in the number and strength of storms.

Its truly shocking some of the images coming from the area affected by the oil. the birds in the oil is terrible and there is a video of a baby dolphin doing the rounds with the dolphin covered in oil. a dolphin washed up dead in florida recently too.....and its only going to get worse.I dont think it has hit most people how bad this is/could be.
