I'm 27 and wouldn't have a problem passing on now. I'm not particularly morose, i have my ups and downs, i'm pretty intelligent, but i've gotten to a stage where i think, if this is it whats the point??

I couldn't care less if I dropped dead now to be honest, I've no attachments to this planet, the only sadness i'd feel is leaving my family, dog and friends.

I've always felt this way, it's got nothing to do with the downturn, no point in getting attached to things when your going to picked off someday anyway.

I can empathise with both of you, you sound atheist, please correct me if I'm wrong, well I am and it can seem pretty pointless when you realise everything is meaningless. But the way I try and look at it is when you're dead you're dead and there's no going back, you may as well be alive than nothing, even if you are sad at the moment (not assuming you are) but there will be some point of happiness in the future, there's bound to be and that is worth living for, better to live for some happiness than die with none at all. All of it is meaningless at the end of the day, good or bad, I would just rather not live in fear of regret of dying, bit of a paradox I know.

Btw I chose the first option, old age does not have to mean being ill and stupid.

My basic yardstick is that when I need a nappy, I'm out of here.

Even Theists can be existentialists, being realistic about the meaning of your life isn't limited to those with no religion.

I don't think that there is a causal relationship between a lack of religious belief and these feelings. I have been a depressing, parasuicidal bastard for years. It is a condition which existed prior to my deconversion. There are plenty of atheists and theists who fall into this same category.

Well so do I and I value old people a lot.

Theists have something to believe in, I wouldn't necessarily call myself an existentialist, I just accept that there's no meaning and get on with life coz I may as well.

Er, with respect, does that not colour your outlook or inform your stance?

I'm not for one second saying those feelings are exclusive to atheists, just that they often go hand in hand with atheism, I didn't mean to be presumptuous about the beliefs of those posters, I was more interested in what their beliefs were so I could see where they were coming from.

I would like to die old in my sleep happy after I complete all my dreams, travel the world, do eveything I wanted to do in life.

Certainly when i was younger (I'm 34 now) i always said i didn't want to live to be a geriatric, but my views have definatly changed. It really boils down to my faith in the after life or the lack of. Meaning i might as well stick around as long as possible as i don't (think) i have any where else to go to.

Their belief is regarding the afterlife, I'm sure many of them question the relevance of this life. Not to mention a lot of them wouldn't care when they dropped dead because it would be 'their time'.

It's a belief none the less, certainly not to be compared to atheism.

I'm not comparing it to atheism, I'm simply saying existentialist thought isn't limited to a belief or lack of belief.

Why would you just assume that all atheists think like that?
I'm an atheist, I love life, I love all it has to offer and enjoy the times with the people I have in my life.
IMO, believing that this life is all there is makes it all the more sweet and to be enjoyed to the max.

Most of the people who will post in this thread will be young, with young ideas about what they think they want in the future.
Ask my 70 year old, very healthy and in good nick parents if they want to live longer, I'm pretty sure of their answer.
If you're in good shape, why wouldn't you want to live to a rip old age?

The only one being presumptuous is you tbh, I simply just related to what they were saying coz of my own beliefs.

Sounds like you havent read any of my other posts.

I say wait until you hit the big 50 ...

Sell everything you got and head to Thailand ... Indulge yourself in a month long drink and viagra fueled banging session with as many Thai birds as you can lay your hands on ( bareback and no-holes barred )

When you can bang no more and the piggy bank is empty ... Go out and radonmly start slapping Thai blokes in the back of the head ... Then leg it back to the Presidential Suite ...

Wait just a little while ...

    And Boom ...

Your on your way as a honoury Member of the Thai Balcony Diving Club

Can think of worse ways ...

Like having some New Age 2052 Scumbag bate the living ****e out of you for a ham sandwich when you are old and frail ...

And there will be plenty of New Age Scumbags by then since we have been encouraging them to breed like rabbit during the good ole Celtic Tiger:pac:

Teens looking for trouble who walk around in white reebok tracksuits with white reebok runners, and a lot of them carry lightsabers on them.

I would love to go peacefully into my sleep not by a heart attack or some crap like that :(. If I die before I can't wipe myself or drive myself anymore.. I would be happy as well. ALthough it would be great payback for the kids if I leave them nasty ones ;)!

Good plan. If I'm incontinent and in the care of my children and they annoy me I'll subsist on a diet of beef vindaloo and Guinness to teach them a lesson. :pac:

I'd like to live to a nice old age but only as long as I was reasonably independent and coherent. If I got to say 70 and I was mentally deteriorating and unable to walk etc. than living to 120 wouldn't sound too appealing would it?!!
