The return of Interpol

So - the band released a new song online late last night/this morning.

    What do you think?

I love it, it's a song that builds nicely. It obviously won't be a single from the forthcoming album but hopefully it's a good indication that they are going back on track after OLTA (which I don't think is awful but was disappointing and contained the only Interpol song(s) I can't justify in liking).

Sorry, thought I mentioned their official website - but I did say the band released it so... Anyhoo interpolnyc.com or Hypem to avoid the whole signing up on mail BS.

Cheers for that. Take you on a cruise probably one of my most favourites songs ever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭Aridstarling

Didn't strike me too much on first listen, standard interpol really. Maybe after a couple of listens it will sink in.

Not a bad tune at all for a freebie.

Doesn't like it's single worthy but would be a solid album track.

I think it's a better indication of what the album may be like than Heinrich Maneuvre was for OLTA. When that song came out I was initially disappointed with it because it sounded overly polished and opened with too similar a riff to Slow Hands. It grew on me but I prefer when their music is darker.

Can't wait to see how the album pans out.

I like it. It builds up nicely. I wonder where it'll feature on the album?? Its about time they came back!

I hope it's not the final track on the record. I like hearing that fresh when I give the album a 1st full listen. Don't like when the bands release the first single/taster of an album and it's the closer. There's something about the last track that should be the one that leaves you wanting more, or if there is a certain mood to the album it completes it like the ending of a good movie.

Love it, a kinda Editors feel to the 2nd half of it. And the new logo is class too!

Editors aren't fit to shine Interpol's shoes IMO!

Damn straight. Interpol are in another league.

I think this song will be the second last one on the album.

Been waiting for something for SO SO SO SO long! Great to see a song at last. I really like it, growing on me. Cannot wait for the album and tour.

We'll agree to disagree ;) Two of my favourite bands. I think they sound very similar in places, just a case of people hearing different things i suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

They've said their going to be putting a few songs on the net over the next few months, so I can't see this being on the album if their going to be put online for free. They've also said their going to be announcing shows for the summer in the next few weeks.

Not a bad track at all. Lot of Interpol fans already noticing Bank's voice staying in the Plenti mode, which for me isn't a bad thing at all, but for some it seems to be a problem.

Either way, looking forward to see what they put out. Narc and Take You On A Cruise I could play millions of times without getting sick of them.

Personally, I'm bored to death with Interpol. I adored Turn on the Bright Lights but in all honestly there hasn't been much progression with their sound. Lights could have been on any of their albums and it wouldn't sound out of place.

Without trying to turn this thread into something it's not, at least Editors have been trying new things. I hate the snobbishness directed at Editors by Interpol fans. I remember at Oxegen, probably 05', overhearing some young one after Editors' performance saying "they're like soooo ripping off Interpol". Looking back I wished I'd had the balls to do a Larry David and tell her that "Interpol aren't the most original band in the world, have you ever heard of Joy Division or The Chameleons?"

The Chameleons, now there's a band that doesn't get enough credit.

Can't say I'm too mad about Lights now. Have given it a good few listens since yesterday morning and it hasn't really grown on me. It builds quite well but nothing anthemic or catchy to it really. Still, it free so I suppose we can't complain.

"Interpol aren't the most original band in the world, have you ever heard of Joy Division or The Chameleons?"

This is a bit of a tiresome argument in itself.

Interpol aren't fit to shine Joy Division's shoes. Not many are, I suppose.

The only comparison between the 2 bands for me is that they both have bassists that deserve a good kick in the nuts. The constant comparing is a product of lazy journalism.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

The Editors and Interpol do have similiar sounds but both should be judged on their own merits. Have a lot of time for the Editors and loved Papillion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,417 ✭✭✭Miguel_Sanchez

Let's steer this away from the old Joy Division/Interpol/Editors debate and back towards the new Interpol material.

I'm really liking 'Lights'. Can't wait for the album! Some new Julain Plenti would be nice too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭Table Top Joe

Hmmm, bit disapointed with this to be honest,i gave OLTA plenty of spins but it just did nothing for me,they seem to be in a bit of a rut, what was yer mans solo album like? never got round to trying it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭GirlOfGlass

I quite like it, but I know a lot of people. Mainly 'cause it's more poppy than Interpol.
Some of the songs are a bit weak on the album, but this one is really good, in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭Table Top Joe

Cheers,i liked that,it was recommended to me when it was released but i was so disapointed with OLTA that i couldnt be bothered with it,a song from "Antics" came up on my shuffle the other day though and reminded me of how good that album was,i might give that solo one a try

bit worried that 3 years after their last album the new song is what theyve come up with, not very promising imo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

New song not the best. Think Interpol have their own sound and all but sometimes they need to mix it up a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

It's an ok track. Deserves a few more listens I think, I'm expecting it to be a grower

Probably an old argument as well, but nothing was ever as good as TOTBL. The other albums were ok, but they all lacked whatever it was that made TOTBL so so amazing.

Lights sounds interesting, will give it more listens before I cast it aside!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 549 ✭✭✭TitoPuente

I did like the Julian Plenti sound for what it was but I'd much rather Interpol reverted back to their roots (as they said they would) with an album that's more inline with TOTBL. I think Lights is just a freebie/taster but I'm hoping it's not indicative of what's coming on the next album.

Interpol are definitely my favourite band but they'll really have to put their best foot forward with this next release to stay that way.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

Whats the story with Julian Plenti. Know he was pursuing other projects as well. Is it fifty fifty between his two bands now. Definitely think their is only so far Interpol can take things with that sound but when they get it right, songs tend to be very good.

Julian Plenti is the side project. Interpol is still Paul Banks main focus. When on the JP tour Paul was still working on Interpol. He stressed in interviews that he "is just the lyricist" in the band and that his contributions musically have most, if not all of the time been shot down by Daniel & Carlos.

How can you expect them to revert back to their roots? They are not the same people they were when TOTBL was recorded. They have progressed (for better or worse) and have evolved their sound. They wont make an album like TOTBL again but they could well make one just as good. Even if they don't, it's ridiculous for people like you to say things like they 'have to put their best foot forward' to stay as your favorite band, they make music for people to listen to and enjoy, not so they can stay on top of someones personal ranking. They have given us brilliant music already and should be thanked for that because there are very few bands as talented as they are.

I hope you let Paul and the lads know they are in danger of dropping down in your esteem. Get a grip.

Because that was the very statement that they made to the public when they started writing this next album. So the rest of your argument is null and void.

The rest of the argument still stands up perfectly straight because your statement of them falling from the status of your favorite band if this album isn't up to scratch makes you sound like a 12 year old.

The band said they wanted to go back to towards the first album. I don't see how that means they are going back to their roots. The new song 'Lights' doesn't seem like they have although I don't think that will be any where near the new album.

Your desperate defending of them makes you sound like a 12-year-old to be fair. I'm not 'punishing' or attacking them... I'm simply saying that they are my favourite band at present but would need to make a big improvement on OLTA to stay that way.
The band said they wanted to go back to towards the first album. I don't see how that means they are going back to their roots.

What's the difference? I'm not 100% sure they used the term 'roots' but I *think* they did. Either way, it's a moot point.

    Let's hope not.

Carlos has left the band according to the official Interpol
    site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 688 ✭✭✭Sútalún

    There is more:
Sadly, Carlos will not be joining us.

After the completion of the album, Carlos informed the rest of us that he would be leaving the band. He has decided to follow another path, and to pursue new goals. This separation is amicable, and we whole-heartedly wish him great happiness and success. We will remain, as always, deeply respectful fans of this blazingly talented individual.

We can tell you that we have some very exciting new recruits joining us on the road. So stay tuned - we will promptly be revealing the identities of these illustrious players.

    Noooooo! :(

Shame about carlos but I did post after their Oxegen gig in 2008 that I feared the end was nigh, most notably because of Carlos's lack of movement and interaction.
    TitoPuente wrote: »

Not to continue any argument - Sam made comments that the new album would be very akin to TOTBL but Paul has since come back while touring Julian Plenti and said he doesn't know what elements of the new songs Sam is getting that from. He said it is still Interpol but it is fresh and not so much "going back to their roots". Sure, many would argue that they never left their roots...

Sad about Carlos, but it's been coming for a while now. His output has got poorer and less plentiful too. Kessler has always been the real driving force behind Interpol anyway, many of Carlos's basslines are thanks to him.

It's interesting that he finished the album first though, one can only imagine what his output on it can be like considering he probably decided before or during it that he was gone.

Last time they played here they didn't have the same stage presence, especially Carlos. It took me 5 minutes to realise he was on the stage after I thought he hadn't appeared yet.

It's a pity but if anything hopefully some new additions will add something new to the band & live show and maybe even future album(s). As cool as many a Carlos bass line was, Daniel still wrote a lot of them.

    Agreed.

Anyone who saw them at Oxegen '08 could see that Carlos didn't seem too bothered about being there at all.

Yeah I was really disappointed by them oxegen '08.. Actually was the last time I saw them I think. They got the setlist all wrong and a lot of the crowd were waiting for Kings of Leon. Unfortunately. So never really had the connection. Don't think they should have been on the main stage personally.

Anyway looking forward to another few songs over the next while!

They're well deserving of the main stage when they are really at it, unfortunately they weren't that night. When they're on form they are a much better live band than Kings of Leon too.

I agree completely, didn't even stay for KoL. I'm a massive Interpol fan and have seen them 4/5 times live. And they're normally incredible. But I don't know if they have the mass appeal to play 3rd headliner on the main stage. Because the last thing I want to see is for the crowd to give them a bad reaction because they don't appreciate them. Ah I dunno, I'm probably wrong actually.. I mean their albums have been pretty commercially successful here.
