Soaking nuts and seeds overnight?

So it turns out that I've been eating way too much fruit (details not necessary!) so I'm off to the supermarket to buy a load of different nuts and seeds to mix together to put in snackpacks for my handbag. Someone mentioned to me that you should soak almonds in water to make them more easily digestible. I was wondering should all nuts be soaked and for how long? From what I've read brazil nuts are a yes and peanuts are a no? And are all seeds fine? If anyone would know an appropriate shopping list off the top of their head that'd be great... (thanks for the help - I feel like I'm always asking but never contributing!)

Soaking nuts do make them more digestible, but only if they are raw to begin with.

Best nuts IMO are macadamias are walnuts, they have the best omega 6 / omega 3 ratio.

Seeds are ok but I wouldn't be eating more than 50g per day, there's a fair amount of omega 6 in most of them which is best minimised. (I hate this fact 'cos I can easily tuck away 150g of sunflower seeds in a sitting)

Interesting. I actually have had the same query (in my head!) recently as i read something to this effect and had never even thought about soaking them before. Doesn't it make them go funny / less crispy?? I can't imagine soaking something like a mac nut and it ending up happily?? :) Also, how do you dry them out and does it take long?

Also I believe your body cannot absorb the omega 3 from nuts (incl. walnuts obviously) as well as from fish, is this true? (I'm sure there's a proper term for this, is it bioavailable or something? Forgive me, nutrition is not my speciality :o) Does soaking help at all with this aspect?

Apparently young women are better at converting short chain ALA (which is your plant-based omega 3) to long chain EPA (which you find in fish) than other people, but the jury's out on whether you get the same benefits of fish based omega 3 from plant based, especially since the plant based is more often in package food and stored for a long time and therefore most likely to go rancid, which is the exact opposite of what you want.

Bottom line, I wouldn't be relying on plants for my omega 3.
