Cork may have a few injury worries but that doesn't mean they will roll over and be beaten by Galway.

We have a dreadful record against Cork in senior (league & championship) hurling finals and have never beaten them. This will be a tight game and could go either way as both sides have improved immensely in the last 2 years. Too close to call really.

Galway to win at a canter I think

I think it will be a 7 point win for Galway although we have a leaky defense so it will cause a lot of problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 59 ✭✭Submara

I think it is ridiculous to suggest that it will be an easy seven point win for Galway.

    Let's look at the facts.
    • Galway have an appalling record against Cork in major hurling finals i.e. 0% success rate.
    • Cork have multi All Ireland winning hurlers in key positions, not one Galway player has a senior All-Ireland medal.
    • Galway have improved steadily in the last two years but still haven't won a crunch match over that same time period.
    • Cork may have been poor in the last two years but they have the players and a huge tradition.
    • Galway are still very fickle and mentally brittle
I am an avid Galway GAA supporter but I don't want us to behave like Mayo supporters and become delusional. This NHL Final is a huge test of Galway's character and a very important match in the team's development. Galway have a lot more to lose than Cork so a win at all costs is vital for us.

True, but I don't know how relevant that will be on Sunday. And Galway actually have an ok record in general against Cork over the last number of years.
Cork have multi All Ireland winning hurlers in key positions, not one Galway player has a senior All-Ireland medal.

Yes but several of those Cork players are nearing the end of their careers now, and not as good as they used to be.

Galway have improved steadily in the last two years but still haven't won a crunch match over that same time period.

The win against Cork in last year's championship was the only real victory of note, so I'd agree that it's high time Galway started winning more big games instead of losing them.
Cork may have been poor in the last two years but they have the players and a huge tradition.

They have a few good young players coming through alright but this year might be a bit soon for them. I've no doubt Cork will be back strong sooner or later, and let's hope we can win an All-Ireland before they do!
Galway are still very fickle and mentally brittle

This year will tell us alot in that regard. Despite the late collapse against Waterford there was alot to like about how Galway played last year and in most of this year's league. They looked tougher and harder and won alot more ball around the half forward line, something that had been a big problem in previous years. I think this team is going in the right direction.

Galway have a lot more to lose than Cork so a win at all costs is vital for us.

That I would agree with. This game probably means more to Galway overall. Alot of these Galway players have won nothing at senior level, and I think that extra bit of hunger might swing it.

For me I'd go with Galway by about 3 or 4 pts.

The Cork Senior Hurling team to play Galway in Sunday's Allianz National Hurling League final at 7pm in Thurles is as follows:

    1. Donal Óg Cusack (Cloyne)
    2. Shane O'Neill (Bishopstown)
    3. Eoin Dillon (Milford)
    4. Brian Murphy (Bride Rovers)
    5. John Gardiner (Na Piarsaigh)
    6. Ronan Curran (St. Finbarr's)
    7. Seán Óg Ó hAilpín (Na Piarsaigh)
    8. Tom Kenny (Grenagh)
    9. Lorcán McLoughlin (Kanturk)
    10. Michael Cussen (Sarsfields)
    11. Kieran Murphy (Sarsfields) Captain
    12. Cathal Naughton (Newtownshandrum)
    13. Ben O'Connor (Newtownshandrum)
    14. Aisake Ó hAilpín (Na Piarsaigh)
    15. Patrick Horgan (Glen Rovers)

    16. Martin Coleman (Ballinhassig)
    17. Shane Murphy (Erin's Own)
    18. Michael Walsh (Kildorrery)
    19. Ray Ryan (Sarsfields)
    20. William Egan (Kilbrin)
    21. Graham Callanan (Glen Rovers)
    22. Mark O'Sullivan (Dripsey)
    23. Jerry O'Connor (Newtownshandrum)
    24. Paudie O'Sullivan (Cloyne)

Very very happy to see Dillon at full-back. We need a proper full-back replacement, which isn't Brian Murphy. Looks a great team other then Ben in the other corner, he won't stay there though.

Galway make 13 changes from the team that defeated Cork in the final round of the NHL two weeks ago. Injury rules out Fergal Moore and Niall Healy, with Damien Joyce and Iarla Tannian coming in. Tony Og Regan starts at centre back, while Cyril Donnellan returns from suspension to lead the attack. Joe Canning is at full forward.

Galway v Cork SH NHL Final Colm Callanan, Damien Joyce, Shane Kavanagh C, Ollie Canning, Donal Barry, Tony Og Regan, David Collins, Ger Farragher, David Burke, Aidan Harte, Cyril Donnellan, Andy Smyth, Damien Hayes, Joe Canning, Iarla Tannian.

I think Joe Canning is THE outstanding player in the country at the moment and a huge player for Glaway . If cork can shackle him in any way i think Cork will win , If he runs amok as he is well capable of doing then Galway will probably win ....Either way i dont think their will be a whole lot in it.

Not this year buddy. I would say that Iarla Tannian has had a better campaign so far at Inter-County level.

I never understood this argument. What difference does the past results between the two teams make if they both had different sets of players? I mean I can understand the debate if they both had around the same panel of players (like the 05 AI final) but how can the fact that Cork defeat Galway in the 1986 All-Ireland final have a bearing on todays match?

I'm not singling you out btw Submara, it's just something I notice.

Brilliant match (my opinion may also be aided by several Heinekens).

Tom Kenny and John Gardiner are great for Cork tonight.

Going well so far. Looks like Farragher will be on Free's this year, no harm Joe has less distance to travel out and Farragher's just as good.

Now we put an end to all the ****e from some people ''he only scores from free's''... 1-2 from play already

Interesting to see what subs will be brought it... hopefully we can push on now and hit another goal or two(the points will sort themselves)

I'm listing to the match on radio 1 and watching it on tv. A little bit annoying with the radio ahead of the tv by around 5 seconds :) A great game to watch though.

A point I underestimated them by. Great win for Galway!

New year, same old ****ing problems. If anything we've gotten ****ing worse. Midfield destroyed. Center back line cleaned out. Basic skills far inferior, still **** in the air, picking up of the ball too slow and striking still too broad. Galway far too physical, far too intense, far too aggressive, and they worked a lot harder.

Galway are operating in a whole other stratosphere. If they had won this game by 18 points rather then 8 it would have been deserved. Men against children. Tipperary will be salivating.

Come on Galway..... Finally playing like a team

Great day.... even though we hit some poor wides towards the end the positive was we kept going full throttle for the 70mins and Cork never got a sniff at goal

Kavanagh was immense, Joe put it to the doubters hitting over 6/7 points from play. Couldnt fault anyone really. All put in a great effort, Cork weren't poor by any means.

two down... two to go :)

Aisake deserves to be taken off the panel let alone out of that match. He was terrible, I think he made about 2 hand passes and the rest he was all over the place! And tbh dont think hes done much for them at all this year, dont see why hes still be started in these games..

Twaz a fair game though, Galway were just class! :)

Galway will be very tough to beat this year. I have never seen them play so well. If any team will beat Kilkenny this year, it will be Galway!

For physicality and now workrate they will be well able to take it to the final whistle with the cats. However they should have beaten Cork by an awful lot more, to me they still lacked that killer instinct.

Not too sure who did that one, Canning bursted a lad with a shoulder and stuck it over the bar.

Good game but just one question is joe canning allowed to take as many steps as he needs to score a goal against cork.He took at least nine steps today and done something similar two years ago to the rock

He had to keep moving while trying to rip his hurley out of the fullback's grip. Some player. Cork were luckey not to have shipped a 15 point hammering there.

here here, Galway were way stronger, fitter and more skillful than Cork. I also think Aisake is not a natural hurler. He may be effective for some parts in an odd Championship game but he'll be found out by the stronger teams.

Glad someone else spotted it. As a neutral it was fantastic to watch and in fairness the referee tried to let a fair bit go, however apart from the steps for the goal Canning also fouled Brian Murphy and Galway scored a point.. On the other side Gardiner should have at least got a yellow for a wild swing early in the match and Sean Og pulled down a Galway player.

Galway were so hungary and I agree with Orizio it was like men against boys but might Galway have their timing right? Its very early in the year to be hurling like that and they wont push Tipp or Kilkenny around like that. I would be slightly worried if I were Denis Walsh but maybe he is planning a different route to Croke Pk? I have never seen a Cork team out muscled like that before and their touch was woeful, they are way better than that. Looked like they are just coming off very heavy training.
Did Asaki just have a bad day? Or is he overrated? I would have Cussen playing a more central role. Gardiner done well enough early in the match as did Naughten, K. Murphy, O'Connor, Horgan and the full-back. I think Cork will come on quite a bit from today and if they lose their first match in Munster a kind draw will see them at the business end of the championship.
Would it be fair to rate them behind Tipp, Waterford, Kilkenny and Galway? If thats all thats ahead of them they could well reach the All-Ireland semi-final? And then who knows......

    Well done Galway.

best team won. Im worried as Corkman as we looked second best in full forward line. Was not impressed one bit with Aisake.

They are ****e Leo, no two ways about it. 3-4 of them should be dropped for Tipp, if only to give them a kick in the balls for that shambles. We'll go through the qualifiers again, and then get another hammering in Semple from Galway or Waterford.

Your straight, I'll give ya that, The same was said of Dublin U/21s. They were S***e today but they are much better than that.

i agree. I often wonder is he there because of his brothers, it certainly couldn't be because of any prowess on the pitch. I'll pick out one of several examples from today to show why he is not inter-county standard. When he was through on goal in the first half, he actually stopped to take the shot on goal, allowing shane kavanagh to get the block in. If a guy cant even hit a ball while on the run he shouldn't be on any county side.

Once again it was Ben O'Connor and John Gardiner who held Cork together when all around them were being beaten. I was quite disappointed with Pa Horgan, was expecting more from him but then again you'll get nothing soft off Ollie Canning. His brother Joe gets better all the time. They have the forwards to really put it up to Kilkenny in Leinster this year, should they manage to stay injury free, which ruined their season last year.

That's nonsense... a good team can perform on any day, giving a good performance this early is a GOOD indication of a teams ability, is it better to play bad?.... if thats the case records in leagues across the world in all team sports is flawed(Chelsea, Man Utd etc....)

In terms of the physicality we already have done that to KK, this year and last. We should have beaten them last summer too, we we're 5 points up twice but died away at the end. There was still a lot of experimenting going on at that stage though.
And this year we did it minus all the Portumna lads

As for Tipp, i still don't see the hype. For what exactly?... winning last years league?... we ran KK closer last year.

Early days yet but i don't see how we could be in a suspect position, this is the best position a team can be in, winning cups, the second of the year and if Leinster follows we'll be two steps from Liam, if not we now have our second chance, something we missed for years!

i watched the game 2 day i taught cork were very poor they looked liked a team that were playing 2 gether for the first time made a lot of mistakes and the comunicaton was bad will it be like that come championship not a chance i know sean og was bad today but how many times can we say that in the last 10 years maybe he is still gettin used 2 the helmet the full forward line i would worry about oiaske i never had time for and saw it today hes only a club hurler if that and pa horgan top scorer in the league came up against a great corner back (32)but still very good player had the better of him over the 70 min

try not to get carried away there, the Ballyhale lads weren't there either (remember how the club finals went;)) but yes, Galway look much improved over last year and the Cats must be well prepared. Looking forward to some good hurling this summer.

I must say i was impressed with galway yesterday. I would be very happy if i was from galway but worried that they will not be as good in late august- can they maintain that form? Better to play well and get better and better. Yesterday they were Very very good. Cork looked leaden footen and not up for the physical side of the game , which is bith of a surprise and there is certainly room for improvement. Tip don't know which cork will turn up, problem is neither do cork!
Both ohalpins should have been dragged. Sean óg was poor from the start as was his brother who was poor throughout. Denis has alot of work to do but there is alot more to come form cork team.

Heard on the way home last night from a club game that there was just over 14,000 in Thurles. I wonder if the game was played at a sensible time would there have been many more there.

Evening games are ok in the local club championships, but at intercounty level are not really on. People have to think about those teavelling etc. Maybe the ordionary league game is ok in the evenings as not all that many away travellers will travel especially if the there is any great distance in travelling is involved.

League finals and Championship games at intercounty level should always be played during the day, regardless of what other sporting activity is on the same day.
