**** Breaking News For Irish Viewers On Sky ****
BBC HD launches on the Sky TV platform tomorrow

NO EPG NUMBER SET AS YET

BBC HD is set to launch on the Sky TV platform tomorrow, Tuesday 27 April. This means that Sky TV customers taking the HD Pack now have access to up to 38 high definition channels, Ireland’s widest range of HD channels! Making the HD Pack better value than ever before!

BBC HD is where you’ll find the BBC’s most-loved content, in high definition. For the first time ever sports fans will be able to see every game of the World CUP in high definition on BBC HD.

The BBC HD channel will be accessible via the HD channels page to the Sky+HD EPG.

And for those of us who have HD boxes but no HD sub it's even better news! :D

This is good news. It is a pity that Channel 4 HD, BBC3 and BBC4 will still be missing.

Good news! We need to get our hands on whoever does these deals and ask them about why the other BBC’s (BBC3/BBC4/CBeebies/CBBC/BBC News) cannot be included.

I suspect BBC HD was added so Sky can plug watching the World Cup in HD.

is this news confirmed anywhere offical?

Ah, good point! I was wondering what their potential motive was!

Sky already get their financial incentive. If they charge extra for BBC HD on the EPG then they really are taking the piss.

interesting the mention of the hd pack? will it not be available unless you pay for the hd pack? considering bbc hd costs 2.50 extra on upc (5euro for the dvr and 2.50 to total 7.50 being the cheapest hd option).. so did sky pay that much to bbc worldwide?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭enfant terrible

Great stuff wonder if we'll get ITV HD on the epg too for the world cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,965 ✭✭✭JDxtra

That would be less likely. Especially with greedy TV3 around. I would not be surprised if they have drafts prepared of letters to Sky in case such a situation arises.

    What?
You get live PGA Masters golf, Rugby 6 nations, The World Cup, Wimbledon, BBC Drama, BBC movies, Comedy.
It is probably the best channel on satellite bar none. And that includes the pay channels.

    content = very good

quality = pretty poor compared to the other hd channels

still good to have it on the epg though

Good stuff, so it is! :D

This also confirms that it is available to us that have HD boxes without HD subs.

The ability to Sky+ series link etc is the biggest appeal. I may upgrade to SkyHD for this alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

I bet sky have the marketing leaflets ready to roll as we speak....the world cup in hd on sky and a free box too... beats upc hands down for those in mmds land anyways that cant even get the recorder with upc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,140 ✭✭✭John mac

    OOglies on series link :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

If only Sky would pull the finger out and do a deal to add BBC3, 4 and News.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭keith_d99

    Why is it better?

Surely you can't record etc without the HD sub?

Fantastic news. Only got the HD box last week without the sub and have been watching loads on the BBC HD channel. Will change all my Sky+ BBC schedule to the HD version when I get home.

Yeah I know. I should have said that all the programmes I have scheduled on Sky+ are on BBC HD as well. I have had most of them set as a back up in case I miss them on the HD channel.

and God knows what it'll be like when the World Cup is on in terms of serials - they buggered up a load of stuff when the Winter Olympics were on like dropping the finalé of "Nurse Jackie" and missing an episode of "Mad Men".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,601 ✭✭✭Kotek Besar

I wish Eastenders were in HD.

I for one look forward to the World Cup dominating the BBC HD schedules. Let's be honest, if it wasn't the World Cup then it would have been Wimbledon.

Half the reason I got the HD box was for the world cup coverage. Just set a couple of things to record tonight on the HD channel. This is first opportunity to record any HD content so it will be interesting to seehow much more room they take up on the hard drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,140 ✭✭✭John mac

A lot! 4~5 times the space of normal recordings.

welcome back charles.... any knowledge of bb3 and 4 going on the epg or did sky just decide they needed bbchd only to market the hd box/

the select few ones i failed to remember, fair dues, those are good events when they are on

    however on tonights lineup:-

    The Beauty Of Maps
    Maps: Power, Plunder, and Possession
    The Delicious Miss Dahl
    Five Daughters
    Later..Live with Jools Holland
    Timewatch..Stonehenge
    Mad Men

not my cups of tea unfort, and this continues during the weekdays

so imo, its a crap channel most of the time, note the "in my opinion"

not a hope i see it as the best channel on sky, plus its a crap HD bitrate channel

still great to have it on the EPG, cant wait for the world cup coverage

    :)

    :)

The BBCHD bitrare is dire, as is ITVHD and ESPNHD. I have been monitoring the bitrates across most of the HD channels and by far the Sky channels are the best quality, EurosportHD is showing the snooker at the moment and the bitrate is averaging 13K, which isn't bad.

As I don't have a Sky box the addition of BBCHD to the EPG makes no difference to me, I have been able to record from it for a long time (as with ITVHD, BBC3, BBC4 etc) but I can't recall ever actually wanting to record anything. The only time I ever watch them is when the footy is on in HD.

Having said all that, there seems to be a lot more content being released so things can only get better!
