I had Steinbeck backed originally but have now backed Canford Cliffs at 12's after the Greenham. I have SNA backed for the Derby at 10's but his price is simply crazy for the Guineas now so cant have him @ 6-4 first time out. May well win but just not as a betting proposition.

I was impressed by CC's run in the Greenham, despite the massive sway to the left he would have won fairly impressively. Showed a nice turn of foot and Hannon reckons he is the best horse he has ever trained.

Canford cliffs for me. I thought he ran a great race at Ascot last year and the word of Hannon saying he is the best horse he has ever trained is good enough for me. Represents the value bet in the race i think. :)

If the ground is fast I'd be happy to lay SNA. Doubt that will be the case though, I reckon they will chuck loads of water on to keep APO'B happy.

I'll head to newmarket to make sure they do :D

Im laying canford cliffs for a place. With the way he has a tendancy to hang in his races as soon as he hits the dip i can see him struggling.

Elusive pim for me each way looks a cert to be placed and big chance of winning too so would fancy him strongly each way;)

I've a reall soft spot for Elusive Pimpernel havent got any bets for the race although Dick Turpin looks the best value regardless of CC and Arcanos prep for the Greenham Stakes. Dick Turpin did the business and has shown hes up to speed. 14/1 will prol be my bet. no access to the 16's

I wouldn't touch SNA at that price. Yes he looks a cert, but didn't rainbow view last year in the 1000 guineas? I would have backed her before I'll back him.

    For the derby and guineas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭larsson7

Yeah well it's 6/4 for Saturday and 7/4 for the Derby right now.
So if it wins Saturday what will price be for Derby? Evens be my guess the way bookies are these days so by my reckoning its a 4/1 shot. Actually evens might be even hard to get!

The 6/1 double means he is getting near 15/8 on his winnings on Saturday for the Derby so he's basically getting the price before the market reacts. Unbelievable value
    Literally unbelievable

He looked a world-beater at Ascot but has disappointed a couple of times since. Plus a stiff mile could stretch his stamina, since he's all speed. Jury still out on him I think.

If SNA turns out to be as good as he could be then it will be good value. But right now 6/1 for the double isn't what I'd call 'unbelievable' value. Brilliant 2 year olds don't always live up to expectations at 3. 7/4 for the Derby is ridiculously short for a horse that hasn't even run yet this year. You're talking as though all he has to do is turn up. It's not always as straightforward as that.

Where, on a high stool while having a pint with my local bookmaker. Suppose it's a bit generous but it's a difficult double as we have seen over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭larsson7

Never said it was a shoe in. Not backing it myself at the weekend but if anyone is 6/1 is crazy value.
Paddy Power actually make it a 10/3 shot so they're saying it's 8/11 to win Derby if it wins at weekend.
So he is just after getting 15/8 about an 8/11 shot, yeah I know powers is sh$t value but in those circumstances it is serious value

Paddy power can make up thier own odds. I dont know how they do it

I thought 6/1 for the double was shocking. Sea the Stars does it last year and now it will become a yearly occurance?

The lads that make up the odds are called odds compilers. I know one of them. Here is some info about them Nulty.

I find they are still much better than Ladbrokes in most cases. William Hill,VC or Bet 365 seem to have the best. Are there any VC or bet365 in ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭larsson7

Think he meant the 10/3 quote which was sh$t cause it meant it was 8/11 for the Derby, if it's 8/11 come Saturday eve the industry is gone to fk.
They are actually still 10/3 eventhough they are 5/4 for Saturday meaning about 5/6 for Derby now which just shows it was a made up bs quote in the first place
Bet365 online only no shops anywhere, VC are in Dublin anyway

theres a huge VC shop in the ifsc and another 1 on baggot street.

they used to let u take any price offered by will hill, ladbrokes, boyles or pp's in their shops if the price was better than theirs in the shop.

no bet 365 as far as l know

John magnier left the barman in our golf club a €50 tip during the week and said put it on viscount nelson each way or without fav. Says he won't beat SNA but will come 2nd.

l got a similar type tip from a o'brien stable worker years ago for sholokhov in the irish derby when high chaparal was 1/3.

had him at 200/1 w/o the fav in ladbrokes.he was the the pace maker.
also had ronaldo to score 1st and brazil to win the world cup final 2-0 at 28/1 the same day.l will always remember that day for the rest of my life.
l used some of the money from those winnings for my half of the deposit of my house lm living in now.

sorry about the after timimg but it was 8 years ago :o

funny that, my uncle told me Viscount Nelson without favorite today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

I bought into the hype...I didn't have a bet in the 2000 yet so Viscount Nelson EW W/O is my bet.

I may look very stupid tomorrow....

St Nic seriously strong today. A few people have told me the stable really fancy it but is very short now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,261 ✭✭✭Juwwi

viscount nelson is 33/1 w/o the fav in stan james or 28/1 in ladbrokes
1/4 the odds the first three.

I also did Viscount Nelson w/o SNA.

I took Dick Turpin EW (With the Fav) also, half the stake of VN though

VN is really well bred and Fallon is 'hopefull' so I've banged a few punts EW on him, come on VN

Lot of burned fingers after that result. Glad I stayed away. SNA never picked up when asked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Well, what went wrong with the fav ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭Goldcupfav

Clanford Cliffs the horse to take out of the race pulled way to hard the first 2 furlongs. No doubt he stays the mile now.

Beat him the last time cause Clanford hung across the track. Today i doubt he would of beaten him if Clanford hadnt of pulled so hard for at the start of the race. Dick Turpin wasnt gettin away for Clanford at the end of that race there. Id be confident Clanford would get the better of Turpin if they raced against each other again.

    Twice with excuses....third time lucky?

Doubt they'll be in too many races together tho. Maybe I'm wrong.

Saw in boyles before the off they were giving 5/2 on SNA to win the guineas and derby.
I usually have sympathy for people who lose but if you took that you deserve to lose.
Sea the Stars wasn't even 5/2 for the derby after he had won the guineas but this lad was without even going onto the track.

Normally I wouldn't mention this but you did it 4 times in one post. You know the horse is called Canford and not C>>l<<anford.

I suspect your still taken by the Ascot race. He's a good horse but DT has the form in the book. Whos to say DT has stopped improving? He keeps getting better and CC hasn't matched that magical run to date.

On another note, could have been a great day gambling....

    * Picked Gigha in the first but didn't bet.
    * Same with JJ (thought there should have been more support)
    * If I hadnt bought into the VC bull, DT would have turned me a profit
    * Went Borderlescott on the nose - 2nd
    * Didn't consider a bet in the next although my nephew arrived back from holidays today....guess his name? haha
    * Had Rashaad EW, beaten out of a place. No hard luck there
    * Considered Karacka Jack but refrained from the bet.

Good Guineas day in all though. Great racing.

just looked at the replay of the 2000 G. Canford Cliffs reminds me of the great sprinters of the past.... Classy 2 year olds who needed to prove to their connections that they were too precocious for a mile. This horse could be the sprint superstar that has been needed for years. With all due respect to the sprinters of the last few years, this division has been screeming out for a real star. Think this is the one.......
