Famine?

I was just wondering, seeing as the Great Famine devastated the country during the 1800s, could there be another famine in this country, and what effect might this have?

    No, there couldn't.

    Why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Because Ireland doesn't rely on one food source anymore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭ItsAWindUp

But would it not be possible for all the crops to fail anyways?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Not to my knowledge. Different crops thrive in different conditions. Maybe if there was a prolonged drought( (Not very likely at all in Ireland though). But even then we can import/ manufacture food

Way less people living here now. Way better agricultural technology. Don't rely so heavily on one single crop. EU to come to our aid.

Ireland is probably one of the most famine-proof countries in the world atm.

ireland never had a famine. there was plenty of food in the country, just the potato crop failed, which was what most of the poor ate.

my LC history teacher hated saying there was a famine in ireland then, because there was food, just not for the poor, the rich had it all.

sorry for playing with words

How many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman??

    None :pac:

We're not dependent on a sole food source. No, it would be impossible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

Increased food productivity because of tractors/fertilizers/modern crops/not relying on one food source etc. Not to mention food not being exported by a foreign power.

It would have to be something catastrophic, Nuclear winter/ asteroid strike etc. for Ireland to suddenly have a famine.

Plus we wouldn't have anyone collecting all the food and exporting it.

A famine is just nature's way of sexifying fat chick's.
Could do with a famine in my house, then I may feel better about myself, especially when I cross dress.

the only way I can see it happening is if the whole crop worldwide failed. Or if it became impossible to import food into the country.

So if we had one group of people in Ireland starving and another group of people in Ireland who had the opportunity to do quite well for themselves exporting food and a government prepared to allow and even facilitate this the latter group would nevertheless refrain from acting in their own self interest and instead come to the assistance of the former group purely out of a sense of altruism based on their shared nationality ?

If you actually believe this to be the case you are either highly deluded. have never lived in Ireland or both of the above.

We'd have to roll Bob Geldof out of retirement for another live aid.

A Famine is a good way to get rid of those veggies, i bet they would not be complaining about 2 Euro chickens in Lidl if they were hungry enough:D.
As my father says where did all these veggies come from, there was none in his time, they were lucky to get anything.

Don't want to sound like a culchie so I'll refer to myself as an educated Dub.

Nowadays there's many ways of dealing with Potato Blight (What caused the famine) from certified seed (Seed treated for and guaranteed safe from various diseases) to fungicides / methods of preventing Potato Blight now part of common farming practice.

Not to mention Ireland is now no longer dependent on one food type, instead if a famine did occur we could import more than enough food to get by.

To the tune of Kelis' Milkshake song:

"My potato's bring all the Irish to the yard, and they're like 'This famine is hard'

'Damn right, this famine is hard.....

I could feed you, but you'll have to starve"

That is the case with almost all famines though, its not a lack of food but the hording of it (or other political events) which causes the problem.

What if, for whatever reason, all the Irish crops failed, and then something crazy happened, like a volcanic eruption or something (I dunno, just shooting from the hip here), and we couldn't import any food?

    I don't want a paradoxically bloated midriff :(.

You got there before me..but this is true people..we import our food now...if for some reason importing it became uneconomical or impossible what would happen?

    There was no Famine ..

    Famine
OK, I want to talk about Ireland
Specifically I want to talk about the "famine"
About the fact that there never really was one
    There was no "famine"

See Irish people were only allowed to eat potatoes
    All of the other food
    Meat fish vegetables
Were shipped out of the country under armed guard
To England while the Irish people starved

And then on the middle of all this
They gave us money not to teach our children Irish
And so we lost our history
And this is what I think is still hurting me

See we're like a child that's been battered
Has to drive itself out of it's head because it's frightened
Still feels all the painful feelings
But they lose contact with the memory
And this leads to massive self-destruction
    alcoholism, drug adiction

    All desperate attempts at running
    And in it's worst form
    Becomes actual killing
And if there ever is gonna be healing
    There has to be remembering
    And then grieving

So that there then can be forgiving
There has to be knowledge and understanding
    All the lonely people
where do they all come from

An American army regulation Says you mustn't kill more than 10% of a nation
'Cos to do so causes permanent "psychological damage"
It's not permanent but they didn't know that

    Anyway during the supposed "famine"
We lost a lot more than 10% of our nation
Through deaths on land or on ships of emigration

But what finally broke us was not starvation
but it's use in the controlling of our education
Schools go on about "Black 47"
On and on about "The terrible famine"

But what they don't say is in truth
    There really never was one

    All the lonely people
    (I'm sorry, excuse me)
Where do they all come from
(that I can tell you in one word)
    All the lonely people
    where do they all belong

So let's take a look shall we
The highest statistics of child abuse in the EEC
And we say we're a Christian country

But we've lost contact with our history
See we used to worship God as a mother
We're sufferin from post traumatic stress disorder

Look at all our old men in the pubs
Look at all our young people on drugs
We used to worship God as a mother
Now look at what we're doing to each other

We've even made killers of ourselves
The most child-like trusting people in the Universe
And this is what's wrong with us
Our history books the parent figures lied to us

    I see the Irish
As a race like a child
That got itself bashed in the face
And if there ever is gonna be healing

    There has to be remembering
    And then grieving
So that there then can be forgiving
There has to be knowledge and understanding

    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from
    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from
