South Park

South Park creators are reported to be writing a new episode of their show featuring drawings of the prophet mohammed(pbuh). This is a new low for atheists picking on different religions. Fair enough everyone is entitled to their opinions and their belief systems but when your beliefs trample on others peoples beliefs then it becomes a problem.

Wow, you are way out of date pal, this happened in 2001 in the episode "Super Best Friends" and he has actually appeared in nearly every episode since.

Edit: emm, seeing as how long they have had so many other religious leaders in the show (eg. Jesus, who kills a load of Iraqis to save Santa, Moses, who is a big gold head and Buddha, who did coke), it occurs to me that you are either a massive hypocrit or could just be taking the piss

South Park has consistently made fun of all the major religions. Oh, and scientology too.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. If it offends your delicate sensibilities, you better stay away from the article on Muhammad on Wikipedia.

    Are you serious?

The episode doesn't feature drawings of him btw. All images of him are censored out with a big black rectangle with the word censored on it lest some people get angry because someone who is not a member of their religion didn't follow the religion's rules.

Thats not an excuse. You have to respect people's beliefs. Islam respects Atheists beliefs and you guys should do the same for Islam.

They took quite a lot of urine out of Dawkins as well. There's no-one they won't make fun of.

Watching South Park, having a strong religious affiliation and expecting not to be offended is like putting a loaded gun to your head, pulling the trigger and expecting to be cool afterwards.

    Just doesn't happen.

Also if you had seen the 200th episode you would have seen Mohammad was censored heavily with a big black and white 'parental-warning' type sign. He then appeared in a bear suit. It wasn't him, it was merely a reference to him - playing with the notion that you can't show him to anyone without the threat of violence/accusations of hate-crime...

Yeah Mohammed has been shown before, I think the confusion comes from that Comedy Central in the US has always censored the image of Mohammed with a black square. This episode might be the first where it is uncensored on Comedy Central.

Can't remember was there a black square on the repeats of it over here or not?

EDIT: seems by the time I posted this it was already out of date, wow these threads move fast.

No I don't. I respect a persons right to have those beliefs, I have absolutely no need to have respect for their actual beliefs.

You dont have to respect any ones beliefs. You do have to respect that people will have their own beliefs, and you should allow them to explain and defend them, but that doesn mean they are free from criticism or ridicule. South park is complete equal in its ridicule of all religions, Christianity, Mormonism, Scientology, and even Atheism* has been done on the show. I dont hear you calling for their respect.

    *not a religion.

Honestly I think it's about time they ripped it out of Mohammed. The things they've done with Jesus - it's only fair.

Yeah, you gotta respect what peoples beliefs are. People rely on their beliefs to live and once you start disrespecting human life like that... well look at Hitler.

You spelled Mohammed(pbuh) wrong. Also, Islam's belief system has been around longer than yours. You can't just make up stuff to suit your own agenda. Their has to be some weight behind your argument.

Hows that? They technically did nothing wrong

Jesus has a talk show on the program. Vishnu is a coke addict and Barbara Streisand is a metal godzilla... you are aware this is an intentionally offensive cartoon, right?

Stalin and Hitler were atheists who had similar attitudes to respecting people's beliefs to the ones expressed in this thread by the way.

You don't get to go through life demanding nothing offends you. I don't 'have' to respect ANY belief. I don't give a monkey's about islam or any other religion. ALL religions are open to mockery.

No you don't and there's no reason that religions should be open to mockery. That's a disgraceful attitude to have.

When you look at modern things that would be considered blasphemous to Christians like Piss Christ or Jerry Springer the Opera, you do have to wonder what would happen if anyone did something like this with Mohammed.

(Or do you - the reaction to the Jyllands-Posten pictures kind of speaks for itself)

I think they do censor the repeats, but its largely pointless. Muhammad has appeared in almost every episode since, he's in the opening credits.

    I usually call him Mo-Dawg.

I don't have a belief system, but if lenght of time a belief has been around is a factor, then there's plenty of religions older than Islam.

He doesn't exist, he may have done once, but he's dead now. No real belief involved in knowing a dead person is dead. Much like Jesus.

What a stupid post. As has been mentioned, South Park have ripped the piss out of every religion and everything. Nothing's taboo.

Aside from that, each religion pretty much tramples on the beliefs of others don't they? Has to be a troll.

ROFL. You have to be a satirist. There's no way a theist could say something so incredibly hypocritical without copping on to how it sounds.

I dunno, but I reckon personal freedom, freedom of speech and of expression are beliefs that have been around since about the dawn of mankind.

You can believe what you want, and you can choose to draw or not draw pictures of whomever you want. You can't push those beliefs and choices on me though.

South Park works because it pulls no punches. It is offensive to none because it is offensive to all. They have attacked christianity, scientology, buddhism, jewish people, blind people, deaf people, the handicapped, homosexuals, celebrities and virtually every walk of life you can think of. To say that one particular religion or entity should be above satire or criticism is an arrogant, disgusting notion.

I really hope Comedy Central have the balls to show Muhammad. Not because I want to upset Muslim people, but because everyone and everything should be on a level playing field.

I wouldn't make fun of people's religious beliefs if their religious beliefs weren't completely ridiculous.

Anyway he's trolling. I was considering an actual response but his post history makes it pretty clear he's not a muslim nor the sort to white knight for them.

It many ways, the only reason their prophet must walk around in a cutesy bear suit is because of Islam's penchant for having their precious feelings hurt and burning down buildings as a reaction, all while laughably calling themselves a 'religion of peace'. Actions have a funny way of backfiring sometimes.

Reminds me a bit of way back when the Satanic Verses were first published, and some Iranian cleric called on believers to kill Salman Rushdie.
They interviewed one of the demonstrators outside a British embassy in Pakistan (I think it was), and he more or less said that he hasn't read the book, but so-and-so says it's disrespectful of Islam, so he will kill Salman Rushdie if he gets a chance.

I know I'm showing my age, but it does saddens me quite a bit to find people haven't used the decades since to grow up a bit.

I loved how South Park tried to stick it to Islam, I'm no believer but it annoys me how chrisitans, jews, mormons, scientologists and any other religious types are fair game but the Islamic crazies have to be left alone for fear they'll go all jihad on someone, they put the mental in fundamentalist

I'm a big South Park fan and have been for a long time. I remember being utterly confused about the whole Danish cartoon farce owing to not one word when Super Best Friends aired (Muhammed had the power of fire btw).

    muhammad.jpg

    Major international cartoon -> silence
Obscure Danish paper -> 6 month delay, but then all sorts of violence

    Heh, funny old world.
