So here it is, I live in Doondalk and in all the restauraunts I visit, none put brown sauce on display, just red and occasionally the odd bottle of mayo might be seen.

are we Irish people just not into that Brown Sauce?

Depends on what it is you're eating it with.

Red for some and brown for others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭Cormac2791

It depends what your eating IMO, if your eating a steak or something, brown is nicer.

Red for chips and fast food etc..

Brown sauce has to be 'hp' though!!

    Mayo!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭Ann22

Yeah it all depends on what you're eating. Red for chips or waffles and on burgers. Brown for dinners with mash...like with sausages and a fried egg...Only drawback is, brown sauce (has to be Chef) has such an overpowering taste it tends to drown out other flavours.
Red sauce is really good for helping to prevent prostrate cancer lads..just thought I'd share that little bit of info.

Brown sauce for Boiled Bacon (with cabbage n spuds) :D

    Red sauce for Rashers,sausages,chips.

Both are yummy in the right context.

    Nah...

Chef Red Sauce on Chipper chips.

YR Brown Sauce on Fresh Cod. (from the chipper too).

We used to have Kandee 1 litre red sauce at home. (thats cause there was millions of us and it was cheap). Horrible stuff altogether.

Three pages in and not one Intermission reference.

    Shocking.

Also - I wouldn't call a place that has ketchup bottles on the table a restaurant, wouldn't it be more a cafe?

    :)

Ketchup contains concentrated amounts of the antioxidant Lycopene. Its present in tomato based sauces like on pizza and in pasta sauces. More concentrated than in fresh tomatoes.

"Research studies suggest that in the body, lycopene is deposited
in the liver, lungs, colon, prostate gland and skin.
A six year study at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health showed reduced risk of prostate cancer in 47,000 men whose diets contained large quantities of lycopene."

    Thanks for the info :)

Just gonna have to eat more fresh tomatoes then, can't get over my aversion to the overly sweet tomato ketchup.

Reggae reggae sauce is an excellent alternative to ketchup or brown sauce. I'd rather give my money to Levi than to Heinz.
