Wow - laws being enforced!

Whomever would have thunk it? :D

I've just got an RF100 for a new XC90 Geartonic and that is just shy of €20,000 of VRT. The Q7 is in the 36% bracket compared to the Volvo in 32%, so whatever the figure is - it's going to be a right kick in the nuts!

edjit must have handed over the keys, should have stood his ground.

    for what reason ?

if the owner was unable to prove very recent ownership or documentation supporting a nordy address - the vehicle should be taken until paid for.

there are far too many "foreign" registered vehicles on the roads that the government are not getting money from - its about time they stopped and checked EVERY vehicle to ensure proper tax/insurance and seize those that are outside the "grace period" or that are unable to supply sufficient information to prove they are not flouting the laws.

Hopefully the Gardai/customs will improve their systems are catch more criminals too, the level of illegal substances brought into the country on a daily basis is shocking - unfortunately they do not have the resources (or the cop on/knowledge to create a path to catching these people).....the justice system doesnt help either (too slow and lenient)

EDIT: I was typing it while you posted Rugbyman !!!

I've got a 2003 Ford Fiesta Van .... which I cant afford to upgrade - even with prices dropping in the republic, every day I see these types of SUV's being driven around by "yummy mummies" and "rich" kids...maybe I'm jealous but I dont think they should get away with flouting the laws

The rights of EU citizens are protected by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights

    Article 17
    Right to property

    1. Everyone has the right to own, use, dispose of and bequeath his or her lawfully acquired possessions. No one may be deprived of his or her possessions.

If you paid for something and own it, it's yours, if you give customs the keys when they ask for it they can take the vehicle, but your within your rights to refuse.

I think "lawfully acquired" can also mean paying VRT, where applicable. The money used to buy it may be legal, but not paying VRT is illegal.

They should bill him for the vrt, they do not have the right to take the car unless you give it to them.

It is not legally yours until vrt is paid.

    Simple

    Duty is not paid
therefore it becomes Revenue property to dispose of it as they wish I would assume.

Bring a vehicle into the country
you have until the close of business the next day to pay the revenue
Failing that deadline you tell me what happens and who has the rights.?

When I was five I had my toy car searched for explosives by police in Heathrow. I lived.:)

Somehow strange....anywhere in world any institution have to prove you're wrong or guilty. In Ireland it is opposite. :(

Having a UK reg on your car with an Irish licence and no papers showing your living in the UK is pretty much proof of guilt!

Or what Berty said below :)

If its a company registered vehicle and you spend 185+ days per year outside of the state you can drive a UK reg here.

You need to apply to the VRT Office for a specific approval letter you carry with you.

Perhaps not. I'd imagine it more likely that a UK car here is being driven by an ROI resident than that the IRA was using 5 year olds to courier explosives a few grams at a time in their Dinky cars. I've no time for rudeness by police anywhere, but it does sound in your case that they might at least have had reasonable grounds for suspicion.

    Fair play to the customs,

Im sorry but there is too many foreign reg cars on the roads for just tourists, and unfortunately the tourists will suffer as they'll be stopped and questions.

Be polite and don't be a knob and you won't get hassle if you've nothing to hide you'll be ok :D

No im not in favour of VRT but we all have to pay it, so if you can afford a Q7 to buy and run, you should just pay the VRT then no hassle.

If it is or not an 'illegal' tax with regards the free movement of goods within the EU its a tax that needs to be paid to registar the car in this state.

But if you've owned the car in a foreign country you re-register it here for what 50 quid, is that right?

Theres too many "cute whoors" out there, if its not registered can you be sure its insured?

If it is are you sure the insurance is actually legal because your out of the country.
I know there is a couple of nordies here who live between the north and south so there alright no problem with them what so ever.

I think you'll find the lads are the necessary 183 days "resident" outside the Sate per year, a period which allows them drive the UK reg cars.

    You are right.

My father saw 5 brand new SUV's crushed in a yard because the VRT had not been paid and they were refusing to pay it.

Customs can do what they like with it if they seize it and you dont pay the VRT.

If you mean the Artists exemption? That only applies to song-writers. WESTLIFE do not qualify for such exemption.

It looks like if you are in certain social position the laws of the land dont apply....If your very successful the law turns a blind eye to you and if your a drug dealer driving a High power BMW etc.. you also are untouchable! Unfortunately most of us are in the social position where fear the law, pay your taxes and dont dare ask questions:rolleyes:

Is there a number you can ring? I'm getting pretty sick at this stage of seeing the 20+ English registered cars parked up in my estate being driven daily.

No, it looks like if you are rich and you want to avoid paying tax, you can pay someone to tell you how to do it legally, and you can afford to meet the residency rules.

Personally, I wouldn't fancy being told by the taxman how many nights I could spend at home.

Why does it even bother you, would you not just mind your own business rather than ratting on your neighbours.

So your telling me if OP reports his neighbours your going to have more money? Come on stop defending the the indefensible. VRT is theft.

I think it's a disgusting thing to report your neighbours when your not personally being effected by them. Only the worst kind of person would do such a thing. Terrible, Terrible, Terrible.
