just watched his 2 songs on the full show - really good, powerful stuff. not usually into the whole irish acoustic singer songwriter thing, but he's got something different - when's the album out?

Yeah posted that on the Music thread just to remind some that there is more to life than the blizzards and the Coronas). Heard another track from his forthcoming album. Shoot the tiger I think its called. Another impressive song

Yeah decent performance. I'm still not totally sold on him yet though, some of his lyrics I find a bit suspect at times.

Having said that though - Meaning of the Ritual off his first EP is a brilliant song and the guy's a great musician with a very tight band. I will definitely check out the album when it comes out.

Also - first Irish artist to be signed by Domino Records, is he not? And he's playing in Road Records today.

Think he is dead good but looking at that joolz clip, he needs a backing band and someone to sing backing vocals on certain lines as he struggled in certain parts of the song "becoming the Jackel" in terms of the line overlaps
Good to see Marina giving him on plug on Jools btw.

his stuff on other voices with the band was pretty good.

No worries. I think his band are great - all brilliant musicians. But Meaning Of The Ritual is still the finest song I've heard from him so far. It blew me away when I heard it first.

Didnt realise the villagers did heavy stuff as well.

I just think the guy is developing and no final opinion can be made as yet. There is a certain sameness to his sound/arrangement at this moment but that won't last long in a recording studio.I can hear backing string sections already.I wouldn't be able for half an hour of this at this moment in time,a touch bland with a lot of potential yet to be uncovered

have to say, I got quite excited when i listened to a number of tracks from these guys. I think they're excellent. Lyrically more so than musically but still very strong musically in my view. I could immerse myself in this for much longer than half an hour. I think they're going to pretty big.

I checked iTunes last night after midnight and the album was there.

However, it said May 21st release date I think, but there was a link to buy (not preorder). I was tempted to try, but I didn't want to get a message saying "Thanks for preordering, come back next week."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭Air_Bass

Yes, Album 11.99 in Tower & HMV. Got it today and have given it one listen through so far. First impressions are good but I think I was expecting more for some reason. I'm sure a few more spins and it will have properly won me over. As another poster rightly said, Villagers do make more of an impression as a full band. Can't wait for the Button Factory gig, saw them in Whelan's in May last year and it was an amazing show. Conor O'Brien is making some great music and deserves to do very well. Glad this album is due for a US release in June, would be nice to see him make an impression over there.

A little bit disappointed with the album on first impression. The guy obviously has serious songwriting talent and the album's full of lovely melodies but I just find it a little bland tbh.

Ok this is slightly off topic so sorry in advance.

Does anyone have a good recording/version of The Immediate - Ghost in this house? Hard it on phantom like 3 years ago and only just remembered it.

    Cheers in advance,
    Ois

Couldn't agree more - have had a couple of listens now and and some songs almost come to life but just fail to ignite. Looks like it's gonna top the Irish charts anyway so a second album might bring him on - ??did he reproduce much off his EP in the album??

The Meaning of the Ritual is on both the EP and the album. That's it as far as I know.

Yep falls into the "shows a lot of promise" category rather than being the definitive article that some reviews pegged it to be. Still a really good album.

Spot on assessment - love the first track but find a lot fo it is forgettable and doesn't really stand out. Was hoping for a lot more given the hype tbh. A nice little record but it just doesn't make enough of a mark imo.

Curious about this but how come everything on the 11th hour is acoustic in terms of acts doing stuff live.
Tuned into the first few shows but it got a bit flat after awhile Would be great to see him something like Late with Jools.

I'd imagine it's a budgetary issue. Takes longer and costs more to set up for a fully electric performance.

Shame. RTE used to be good for stuff like Radio Ga Ga and stuff. Eleventh hour I was disappointed with for most part and noticed there are old interviews being used as well.
To their credit the Other voices sessions are good.

I bought Becoming a Jackal the other day, I was hoping 'On a Sunlit Stage' would be taking it's pride of place on the album but alas... It's my favourite thing he's done and I can't find it anywhere.

Please do not ask for people to send you copyrighted music.

The song is easily purchased on iTunes.

I know it's subdued but bland is a bit over the top I reckon- only listened twice in full but it's one of the most beautiful records I've heard in years. Delighted for Conor that he's getting the airplay and attention he deserves. They hype up so much mediocre rubbish in this country- bell x1, delorentes yada yada yada, whereas at least it's warranted (imo) with this guy.

If this gets to number one it's a good day for music.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

Just curious why none of the other band members seem to be doing the promos with him re interviews.
Would have liked to see Conor with the whole band on Joolz.
