    Hi there,

Im doing an assignment on resistance training at the moment and part of it requires a list of the advantages and disadvantages of resistance training.

So far, this is my list

    Advantages:
    • Helps Reduce Body Fat
    • Increases Strength and Mobility
    • Increases Bone Mineral Density
    • Improves Cardiovascular Health
    • Improves Mental Health
    • Improves maximum speed and power in the athlete
    • Rehabilitation following injury
    • To reduce the risk of injury
    • Enhance sport skill expression
    • Facilitate greater stability
    • Enhance fitness capabilities
      • Stabilise the neuromuscular system

    Disadvantages:
    • Can be dangerous if untrained athletes train without a proper programme and without proper supervision
    • If the load used is too heavy and used with poor form, it may lead to injury.

If anyone can think of any more to add to the list, particularly on the disadvantages side, I'd be very grateful.

Not sure how to phrase this or if its just me but i think theres a greater tendency for people to overtrain and not allow for adequate rest with resistance training, which would also lead to greater risk of injury

    Disadvantages

    - Not being able to fit through doors
    - Injuring people with spontaneous lat-spreads
    - Constantly wondering what the protein content of a king size snickers is
    - Buying clothes to accomodate the quads of doooooooom
    - Social occassions ruined by farting
    - Accidentally killing partners during intercourse
    - Trying to change the chanel, and smashing the remote control with your powerful finger
    - Pychological preoccupation with how you could save someones life if they were trapped under a car because of your savage deadlifting session

The two disadvantages are kind of the same, no?

Struggling to come up with disadvantages? :)

Resistance training facilitates the principle of progressive overload ie as you can up the amount of weight lifted, you can continually challenge yourself.

Also from a female point of view resistance training is pretty empowering.

    Advantage:
    It makes you awesome

Not sure if it fits in your disadvantage column, but cost can be high.

example - as you get fitter, you increase the speed on your treadmill. As you get stronger, you have to buy new plates / DB's / KB's

A bit tenous i Admit, but you have to be balanced!

Yeah, I wasn't sure what sort of things would be included as it seems to be a essay type thing. It obviously takes up otherwise free time. Though one advantage for me is that it saves time in other ways, e.g. carrying more stuff so I have to make less trips. Or in work I do not have to go sticking things in a vice as I can just hold them steady or do not have to find a specific spanner if I can hold a pliers tight. I can also climb up/over things which can save time.

DOMS is a potential disadvantage depending on how you train

I broke my 99 comming out of the shop after the gym today coz of my amazing grip strength.....

One notable disadvantage for myself is its effects on other sports, in particular, recovery time.
This might not necessarily mean painful DOMS, but more so, the strain on the CNS. Sometimes whilst training, (Football) my body is simply drained from the squats/DL the night before.

    This is VERY true...

Although saying that i suppose it goes back to the question of training efficiently

I would say other people's perceptions/ignorance would be a disadvantage, a lot of people don't understand the foods, powders, training, etc. they're used to team sports but weight training seems anti-social in comparison and is a bit different.
