Get a Terrier or a large cat?

It takes Strychnine a while to work so expect to see dead rats in a few days. Failing that, get a rat trap from Woodies.

Rats will carry the bait back to their nest, if you are using the large pieces of poison, always break one piece into bits so they will eat it there, it can take a few days to kill them.

Apparently their innards explode when they drink after eating the poison, so leave out a saucer of Red Bull for them as well.:D

No I think cheese works best in traps......

Are you using the Storm blocks rather than the pellets? Rats often take the blocks and bury them, while they have to eat the pellets there and then. If you give the blocks a whack with a spade then they break up and it works as well as the pellets do.

    Edit: beaten to it!

    PS: Storm is good.

Good old fashion traps, break their necks and have the proof lying in front of you. Removes the element of doubt often caused when using poison, not as clean though.

Rats notoriously prefer nesting in children's play areas so remember to put plenty of arsenic all over the room

Find a satirist from Ancient Ireland. One of the first tests a satirist had to go through was to prove his or her ability to charm away rats.

I remember a local farmer who used to trap a few rats, put them in a barrell, after a few days of starvation, the Rats start to attack each other, eventually, he would release the now Cannibalistic Rat into the open which would now hunt any other Rats around for food.

That's one rat I wouldn't want to be within a mile of!

OP be very careful dealing with rats. They carry weil's disease which is lethal.

That brutal process could only lead to the creation of a species of Uber Rat, who will eventually kill us all....

Old wives tale. And even if it was true it would be highly unhygienic.

OP where did you say the rat was? Indoors or outdoors? It's always best to use snap traps to kill them if they are indoors. Bait with a bit of a Mars bar or any sort of nutty chocolate bar. Using poison indoors isn't the best practice; and the little bugger could end up stuck in a hard to reach spot and smell up the shop.

Try to lay poison bait pellets outdoors in an old piece of drainpipe to stop other animals or birds getting at it. Those bait station things are good as well.

    Happy hunting

What type of ground have you under your deck? Rats hate small sharp stones and tend to avoid them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭Drake66

Common enough spot for them in a garden alright. They love a nice bit of harbourage. I had them under my garden shed. They tend to tunnel around under it. Make sure to keep laying bait until they stop taking it. Make sure there are no cheap sources of food available to them; keep compost lids/flaps closed, if you feed birds use a feeding cage, keep pet food etc under raps. If areas of the garden are overgrown cut them back; they lover cover. You can set snap traps outdoors to get a confirmed kill: set them inside an old plastic milk crate or something and cut a small flap in the side. Put a board on the top to keep the trap dry.

There's a good few extermination companies around the country.

    These ones are in Dublin:
