Do you need a tux? Will a black suit do, will a grey one? I like the grey one..
    :)

    Thanks!

this has come up a few times on the forum, there are some extensive answers to this in the databank already if you want to check.

to the best of my recollection, the ball is officially formal and not black tie although 99% of the guys wear dress suits (tuxedos). you won't be refused entry dressed in a suit (I've never heard of anyone actually been refused for not being appropriately dressed). I've seen plenty of guys not in tuxs or suits, but I don't know if they actually went through the front arch to get in.

is it the suit hire putting you off? or just don't like the look of a tux? if you don't mind being the guy that's dressed significantly differently to the other 99 guys wear the grey one.

of course, i recommend you get a tux, there aren't a whole lot of opportunities to wear them and most guys look great in them.

Technically speaking, suits are actually informal wear and the minimum formal attire for men is black tie (aka dinner jacket / tuxedo). You won't be refused entry with a grey suit (and we wouldn't want to stop you expressing yourself, Tar!), but I personally think it looks great for everyone to be decked out to the nines in black tie.

Agreed. Nonetheless, formal standards for attire are such a load of ****.

Why anyone would turn up at a party that clearly specifies black tie looking like he's just stepped out of the office is beyond me.

It's things like this that have made Trinity Ball nothing more than a glorified piss up for people in their 20s who still behave like they're teenagers. I would argue that the MCD-run Trinity Ball has a negative impact on the College rather than a positive one.

It's time to grow up. Go out and buy yourself a dinner jacket.

OP: I wore a grey suit last year and had no issues (got a ticket at the last min)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,803 ✭✭✭El Siglo

Tar, wear this tux to the ball and get someone else to wear this. It'll be totally worth it. If all else fails, this will sort ya!:D

Thats a load of crap. Most college ''balls'' are black tie, as are your debs, and this illicits the same emotional response of ''one last piss-up''. 4k drunken eejits in tuxes are still 4k drunken eejits.

(as for the whole suit thing, I'll be wearing a very dapper white tux jacket. Take that society)

A white dinner jacket? Is Trinity now in the sub-tropics? Will the ball be on a cruise ship this year? Are you going to play the piano for us?

Maybe cos its cheaper than to buy/rent a tux for one night, when no one even cares what you look like?!

    PapaRatzi wrote: »

Why should it be any more than that? What exactly do you expect it to be? If they don't even serve food then its never gonna be a "ball" anyways. So the format/cost etc of the ball isn't perfect, who cares, just chill out and enjoy it!

It's time to do what people tell you to do. Heaven forbid students choosing to do what they enjoy doing! Conform with the tradition or this institution will lose all its appeal.

Speaking of which PapaRatzi, it's tradition on this website to shun traditionalist viewpoints.

You might aswell buy the tux, I got one in black tie in december, for 99 euro, cant go too wrong with that, thats as expensive as hiring one. Besides, at 78 euro a ticket, you might aswell make an effort-its not like you don't know that its formal dress.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 PapaRatzi

I can't stand the word "tuxedo". Even worse is the word "tux". That's what Americans wear on prom night.

Black tie, or evening wear, is a well-defined dress code. Attempting to "dress down" (no, you are not being Avant-garde even if you like to think you are) at a black tie event is moronic. It's no surprise that these types tend not to get invited to formal events. And it's no wonder they don't see the need to own a black tie outfit.

It is due to being on a tight budget, it is free to wear one of my suits whereas cost money to rent a tux. I can wear an expensive suit to make you happier, but I'll probably want to save that for a more formal occasion.

Pick up a tux next time you're in Asia ;)

Got a tailor made tux and dress shirt for 76 euro a few years ago :) - that's cheaper than renting one over here... though a plane ticket might set you back 600 euro though (just get 10 tuxes :P )

Indeed. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg to dress properly. In fact, if you want to look like these guys, you'd want to have deep pockets:

Do girls wear high heels on the cobblestones? Sounds like a recipe for sprained ankles (and lawsuit clients for law students ;) ) I noticed them repainting the steps with new bright white coatings...might had legalities in mind :pac:

I believe Channel 4 did a programme on traveller weddings - I didn't get a chance to see it though :( - though seriously, it was supposed to be a really good insight into how the vast majority of law abiding travellers aren't like what the general public portrays them as.

Simple elegance. (it looks simple, but it's very easy to get wrong - one spur of the moment urge to go for the polka dot clip-on bow-tie that your girlfriend pointed out off the shelf and you're ruined...)

There is a very good reason that black tie affairs are usually associated with milestone events such as the opening of a major theatrical production or the presentation of achievement awards: the formal dress code invites attire that aptly reflects the uniqueness and distinction of the occasion. Therefore what a person decides to wear to a black tie event, opening night or formal cruise dinner cannot be viewed solely as a personal choice of wardrobe but as a contribution to the evening itself.

Consequently, a man has two options when attending a black tie event: he can either wear a suit and subsequently lower the occasion’s standards or he can opt for formal wear and raise the bar. There is no middle ground.

6.5/10. No waist covering. Shirt sleeves not long enough (although I'll forigive his parents for buying him a jacket just a little too long that he'll grow into). Also, I like to see a nice satin or silk pocket square. Don't like the white buttons or the wing-tip collar on the shirt, but you'd get away with that. Nice shawl lapel jacket. I prefer pleated trousers to flat-fronted ones.

Good effort, he'd be in the top 5% of T Ball goers with that: at home in a sea of mediocrity.

Haven't worn a tux in 5 years, can't justify it with bills atm, so c'est la vie. I would prefer to wear one but I might as well get use out of the grand I paid for a suit, that I never wear.

All girls I know are in the same boat. We'd prefer to buy a nice new ball dress and accessories but can't really justify it right now. From previous experience you end up lying in the grass and getting filthy anyway.

Was thinking of wearing flat boots...is there a chance I'd actually be refused entry?

I haven't been in Trinity apart from this year, the layout looks fairly odd.
