Just a quick one...does everyone else call this the landing? I'm starting to doubt myself...

Lately I'm remembering a lot of words I used as a kid that I'm not quite sure about these days

Nope, upstairs is including the bedrooms. The landing is the part from the bedrooms to the main bathroom

Maybe because when you are carrying something upstairs, for example a load of washing, you just land it there and let everyone take whats theirs?

Because it's where I used to play with my planes when I was a kid. Best place to 'accidently' send a wary parent down the stairs and still have it look like an accident!

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

And while we're in the area...did anyone ever put their foot through the gaps in the wood in the attic? The warnings we used to get about walking on them...

According to a Google search it's also called a landing: http://stairs.interiordezine.com/images/stair_tread_and_riser.jpg.

Personally, I'd have called it a pause.

It can even be applied to the area at the foot of the stairs, according to dictionary.com.
    That sort of cheapens it.

    Anyone remember Knots Landing?

When I was young we used to call that area "where AnonoBoy sleeps".

Always known them landings too. Never thought about it before. Where does the name come from?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,689 ✭✭✭✭OutlawPete

I grew up in Swords and my brothers told me when I was eight, that the Landing was called 'the landing' because if you forget to turn off the light there, planes would land on your house thinking it was the runway

On a slightly related topic, I do distinctly remember calling the banister the "balancester" for several years. It'd made some sort of sence if you think about it.

I thought a landing is what you get when you fall drunk from this upstairs area onto the floor below.

Thats called the return, as in the first floor return, the second floor return, and so on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,763 ✭✭✭Sheeps

I personally refer to it as the upstairs private domicile reception quarters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

That has a name? When do you people reference that?

I just call the entire upstairs area "upstairs" and then specify a room if I need to

You've never heard of a landing??
What if you're talking about something that's on the floor or something in between the rooms?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

And the hot press, or presses. What is up with that? Is it because you press the door closed or something?

'Press ' is an Irish word for cupboard, which I always wondered about. Hot cupboard sounds odd somehow.

In our house its called the airing cupboard, which makes more sense (to me!).

It's either 'outside' (If I'm in my bedroom) or 'at the top of the stairs' (If I'm downstairs)

Do you have a board inside with cups hanging off it and a nice breeze blowing through it?
