Munster Squad (for Australia next week):
    Mike Sherry, Sean Henry,
Wian du Preez, Peter Borlase, Dave Ryan, Stephen Archer,
Dave Foley, Ian Nagle, Brian Hayes, Billy Holland,
Alan Quinlan, Niall Ronan, James Coughlan, Tommy O'Donnell, Peter O'Mahony, Paddy Butler,
    Duncan Williams, Conor Murray,
Declan Cusack, Paul Warwick, JJ Hanrahan,
Tom Gleeson, Barry Murphy, Sam Tuitupou, Ivan Dineen,
    Doug Howlett, Simon Zebo,
    Sean Scanlon,Denis Hurley, Scott Deasy.

    http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/8235.php

There could be a few players released from Ireland to add to that squad, the likes of Varley and Hayes come to mind.

As it stands, I'd like to see
    Du Preez, Sherry, Borlase, Nagle, Holland, Quinlan, POM, Coughlan;
Williams, Warwick, Zebo, Tuitupou, Dineen, Howlett, Hurley

Bench: Henry, Dave Ryan, Foley, Butler/TOD, Murray, Deasy, ?

I wouldn't put Deasy at fullback again after his performance at Ulster so stick Hurley there and I wouldn't expect Dineen to feature if Gleeson and Murphy are good to go.

On the injury front, I heard Darragh Hurley has got hurt again. Barry Murphy played 80 for UL Bohs and by all accounts had an excellent game.

This might have been a possibility (McCaw to Munster), but the money is getting tight now and unless there is a dramatic change in this, i am afraid we won't be able to afford him.
In fact, how will we be able to keep our star names at home.
When they are all gone maybe Bob Casey will get a few well deserved caps as the Ban that doesnt exist will have to be lifted.
    Welcome to the new world.

I was just about to ask about Hurley.Thats a pity that he's injured again. I was hoping he'd get some gametime here.

    From the Examiner.
Revitalised Murphy eager to wallop Wallabies
    By Charlie Mulqueen

    Thursday, November 11, 2010

ONLY one team scored a try against the All Blacks on their Grand Slam tour of the Northern Hemisphere in 2008 – and it wasn’t Scotland, Ireland, England or Wales.

The honour went to Munster, who frightened the lives out of the New Zealanders on a memorable night at Thomond Park before they scraped a win through a late, late Joe Rokocoko try. The man to breach the tourists’ line was Barry Murphy. It’s an achievement he’ll dine on for the rest of his days.

"I hear the question often comes up at table quizzes," he mused. "I didn’t have to do a huge amount, the scrum did the work and Strings (Peter Stringer) spotted the gap and all I had to do was touch it down but it’s a nice one to have.

"It was an incredible night and I’ll never forget it. It was unbelievable: the build-up, the history, the crowd, the atmosphere... we have a lot of connections with New Zealand and even travelled there as a family. Every Kiwi who came to Limerick for the first 15 years in my life seemed to stop off at our house few a couple of weeks."

Sadly Murphy’s appearances have since been seriously curtailed due by a series of ankle, back and hamstring injuries. He wasn’t helped by an apparent misdiagnosis and rushing back prematurely once or twice and his last game for Munster was against the Dragons 14 months ago.

However, since his return less than a month ago, Murphy has scored outstanding tries in two of his three outings with UL Bohemian and is now hopeful that his injury problems are a thing of the past and that Tuesday’s clash of Munster and Australiain the Sony Ericsson Challenge at Thomond will herald greater things.

"I never for a minute thought my career was over," he maintains. "It was very frustrating but I knew it was going to come right. I came back in April for a game with Bohs and lasted four minutes. I went over on my ankle again. That was a pretty low point but there are a lot of inspiring people around who have also gone through tough times, you see what Jerry Flannery and Paul O’Connell have to go through.

"I’ve been working with those guys every day, having lunch and chatting, keeping each other in high spirits. When you’ve got people like that around it makes it a lot easier. I firmly believe that these experiences stand to you and while I might have missed a lot of rugby, I still learned a lot in the year.

"Tuesday is my first chance to prove to the management that I am still a force to be reckoned with. I just need game time."

Munster coach Tony McGahan believes having Murphy available again means a lot to the squad.

"Barry has been an integral part of Munster rugby for a long period," said McGahan. "He has struggled for continuity of games and training time and that’s tough.

"So full credit to Barry and his determination to play for Munster."

This is great news for Munster and for Ireland :D

    From Munsterrugby
O'Callaghan Puts His Faith & Future In Munster

11 November 2010, 5:08 pm By Pat Geraghty

Donncha O'Callaghan has put pen to paper to extend his contract for a further three years with Munster. Share
The second row who turned 31 last March concluded his negotiations this week that in all probability will see him end his illustrious career in the red of Munster.
He has been capped 172 times since making his debut in 1998 and been involved in all of Munster's major triumphs.

Coach Tony McGahan was clearly more than happy whern asked for his reaction to the news. "We're obviously delighted that Donncha has agreed an extension of his contract. I believe it's a massive boost for Munster given the strong interest there was in him from overseas clubs with far greater financial resources than Munster."

"He's a hugely ambitious competitive character," McGahan continued, "and I think this sends a clear message concerning that ambition and where it will be best served. Here in Ireland with Munster. "I think it's also a very encouraging sign for younger players to see a player of his calibre and universal appeal showing the loyalty and commitment he has done by agreeing this new deal. I look forward continuing to work with him. This is certainly good news for Munster Rugby."

The player himself speaking from the Ireland team hotel in Dublin where he is preparing for his 65th Ireland cap said "As players we are so well looked after by both the national and provincial management teams and I feel incredibly privileged to be able to play the sport I love for both Ireland and Munster. Munster is my home province and the decision to continue my career here was an easy one when you consider the standard of players in the squad and the incredible support I have received from both the fans and my family. My focus now is to try and perform as well as I can to help Munster and Ireland to be successful."

I couldn't care less what rumour ya heard about Warwick last year . . .all I asked was did anyone else hear the rumour about Tony. Its not rocket science.

well it seems despite all the ****e replies from some folks I was right about Mc Gahan at the time . . . .but matters were rectified during that week.

. . .and it all ties in with Tomás's broken hand/ thumb and Quinny being dropped.

    End of.

The disgraceful taunts from Munster fans that was born out of the semi-final in 2006 and the treatment of certain Leinster players, not least Contepomi, was where the healthy Irish rugby rivalry became bitter.

Leinster endured years of abuse from Munster and the media, and as soon as the tables turned, Leinster were branded bully boys and soccer hooligans in the media.

We've come a long way since the articles of hair straightners and lady boys, and I like it.

I started a thread on Leinsterfans about the greatest ever Leinster game, and listed about 10 of Leinsters finest moments in professional rugby, and about half picked the semi win over Munster - not even the final win over Leicester - because that was the day we took back our pride, hammered the sh*t out of the ones who taunted us most, and took the crown of king pins.

You can sense around Leinster rugby that we're growing into the best team in Europe, I think our glory days are all ahead of us over the next decade, and I know many Leinster fans wont be shy about arrogance and taunting, and rightfully so .... for all of Munsters glory and never losing a game, just bravely battling to keep close in an unwinnable match, and never winning a game, but defying the laws of physics and reality, as a Irish parish could not produce these men, they must be godly in their perfection, and for all the rhetoric of brave and faitfull and standing up and fighting and wearing the jersey with pride and honour and having all the rich history - Munster really don't have much more to show for their efforts of 10 years of domination in professional rugby than Leinster. One Heineken Cup, and that's all. And they certainly never achieved a 5 in a row or 30 - 0 thumping.

I can see Leinster settling the score in the near future and then surpassing Munster as the most sucsessfull province in Irish history, and silence the ligends for a while. ;)

It always amazes me how rivalry is embraced in every sport in every country, but for some reason it's shameful in Irish rugby to speak openly about a Leinster / Munster rivalry - I've been to Thomond Park and I've seen Munster supporters first hand, and anyone who's been to a Leinster v Munster game down there and doesn't think the Munster supporters are disgraceful to Leinster supporters is lying or in denial. It's blatantly obvious and it's from the ground to the pubs. I've seen border line violence on those trips and I've seen violence on O'Connell street in Dublin after the semi in 09 also...a hostility that far exceeds any treatment of fans in RDS, Lansdowne or Croke Park..

It exists, it's real and there is a rivalry there. I don't think it should be taboo to acknowledge it, talk about it or accept it. Hell, I don't think it should even be taboo to buy into it. Rivalry is what makes sport great. If we were all indifferent to each other it'd be like playing the Dragons every week...

European rivalries, local derbys, they're the greatest events in rugby and Leinster & Munster is arguably the biggest and certainly oldest rivalry in world rugby. 83,000 or so going to a head to head in a crunch European encounter, and you could have sold 150,000 tickets for that match. It's huge, let's not hide from it any more. Neither side is right or wrong, it's just sport and it's a bitter rivalry, let it exist, let's not all be overly PC and deny it, as long as we're not taking it too far, abusing each other and spamming the board, I say embrace it.

Deep down, most hardcore Munster fans love nothing more than beating Leinster, and vice versa. And deep down, if you're being honest, no Munster fan would like to see Leinster lifting 2 or 3 Heineken Cups over the next few years, and vice versa...it's natural, don't fight it. It's all banter at the end of the day, and as long as we can share a pint and not be out of hand, then we're all the better for it I say.

    Rubbish,

Perhaps you need to learn alot more about the History of Irish Rugby to see where the "problem" munster folks have with Leinster comes from . . . . and thats where the whole rivalry should be sent . .to history, to the bin.

Rivalry is part of sport . . . healthy rivalry is good . . . but the Horse **** rivalry between Munster and Leinster at the moment is not good . . ..and Ulster dont escape either.

Go to an International match, listen to many many folks . . .they are not true Ireland fans . .not true rugby fans,

Im talking about the amount of folks there to shout for their own provincial players . . . . and people from all provinces are at it . . . abusing irish players from another province in the hope their own will be brought on.

Its pathetic tbh to see irish fans divided . . . . . and it shows folks up for what they are or should I say are not . . .Not true Rugby Fans.

If someone is more interested in a petty provincial rivalry than the success of their national side then they are a disgrace imo . . . . .and thats the problem with the current unhealthy rivalry between the Irish Provinces.

A true rugby fan can appreciate ROG and Sexton as much as each other . . . .etc etc . . . .or and old rivalry betweeen Humphries and ROG . . .its sick to see so called fans at Irish games only getting behind the team when "their" flyhalf was brought on . . .spending every moment until that time slating the other flyhalf.

A true Irish Rugby fan would be delighted to see any other irish province doing well . . . . . I'd love to see leinster win another HC . . .not at Munster's expense of course, but if Munster were out then by god I'd love to see giants of irish rugby like O Driscoll, Heaslip etc succeed.

Sport is full of rivalry yes . . . .but many many of the rivalry's in sport are very unhealthy . . . and the current Munster Leinster one is unhealthy imo.

The only aspect of the rivalry thats healthy is that of the players . . . .cos the carry on of so called "fans" is pathetic.

And your post was full of that kind of rubbish.

. .and as for your "its natural . .dont fight it nonesense" . . .it might be for you, but anyone who considers themselves a rugby fan finds nothing more intolerable than that crap your advocating.

I find it odd how, for example fans of Real Madrid can cheer on Barcelona players when they play for the national team and vice versa despite that being a MUCH more intense rivalry but when it comes to Munster and Leinster and the Irish national team theres such a divide.

It got extraordinarily prevalent when Kidney took over and to be honest I think its down to appointing a coach so entrenched with Munster rugby as national manager who goes onto pick Munster players ahead of players playing better and giving every marginal call in favour of a Munster player.

If Guardiola took over Spain tomorrow and started playing Barcelona players over better Real Madrid players then I think you'd see the same. And if a member of Guardiola's coaching team came out and said "oh we picked him because hes from Barcelona!" (Smal) there would be war.
The likes of Mick O'Driscoll, Donnacha Ryan, John Hayes and Dennis Leamy over Leo Cullen, Sean O'Brien, Mike Ross is the icing on the cake for me.

The National situation won't improve until we have a foreign coach in charge. Only then will people accept the unbiased calls. Right now its a situation that people are getting angry because deserving players aren't getting game time because the coach has loyalties.

I'll cheer on Ireland today and forget about all of that but it doesn't change how I feel about the ever present bias in the Irish national team selection. I'll say it again, this is the best team we could put out but it will never happen because of Kidney's loyalties

Right so you think Kidney should be putting out his best team against Samoa in a utterly meaningless Autumn International 1 year before the World Cup????

. . . . .samoa a game many players fear due to injury potential against the samoans??

Kidney is mixing and matching, he is using all sorts of players for the Samoa game, like Fitzgearld at 15 . . .to try different options . . .to try and establish some depth in the squad at various positions. Its not about fifteen players!!

Any manager who puts out his best 15 each and every game of an autumn series the year before the world cup is an idiot.

Robbie Deans wasn't at it and has lost autumn series games all over the place . . .yet his squad are ranked top 2 or maybe top 3 to win the world cup next year.

Livermont is at the same thing today against Fiji . . . .mixing and matching and his squad are also hotly tipped for the world cup . . . .

We have been great at winning meaningless autumn internationals over the years . . .and not performing come the world cup.

So its not bias . . . .its called experimenting.

Kidney was picked based upon his managerial sucesses . . . .and guess what, Ireland won a grand slam . . .first one in 61 years!!!!!!! . . . .eaten bread is soon forgotten.

we dont need an overseas coach to end the divide . . .we just need people to grow up.

Peresonally like to see Murphy in for that game . . . .at 15.

Or Luke back there who was good today. He did well imo.

I believe Murphy is after getting called into the squad.

instead we'll have the likes of John Hayes, Mick O'Driscoll and David Wallace playing against New Zealand none of whom deserve to be starting considering the options.

I wonder if there's a chance that Earls could be released for Tuesday.

Earls didn't make an appearance today for Ireland and I remember in 2008 Kidney released Tony Buckley for Munster vs All Blacks. At the time, Buckley was on the bench for Ireland and he came on in the second half for Munster IIRC.

Even if he was restricted to 20/25 minutes coming off the bench, he'd be an important player to have. He could do with the gametime anyway, he's only played 10 or so minutes in 3 weeks, last 'full' appearance was against Treviso.

I find it odd how, for example fans of Real Madrid can cheer on Barcelona players when they play for the national team and vice versa despite that being a MUCH more intense rivalry but when it comes to Munster and Leinster and the Irish national team theres such a divide
If a national team is doing well anybody from that country will follow it as you will hopefully remember in 2009.

It got extraordinarily prevalent when Kidney took over and to be honest I think its down to appointing a coach so entrenched with Munster rugby as national manager who goes onto pick Munster players ahead of players playing better and giving every marginal call in favour of a Munster player
You'd really have to meet the man himself to know this is nothing. His selection panel entails an Aussie, a South African and a Leinster man as well as himself.
Honestly, reading some of the comments here you'd swear they didn't want to do well with the national side or didn't know what they were doing.

ROG summed it up best, in my opinion by pointing out that confidence amongst the players is not great at the moment. It happens.

I watched the replay when I got home from stadium last night. I could see what was attempted. There were a couple of moves for example which were so close to coming off but final execution shat on them.
I remember before, people were complaining that the team was ordinary and playing too basic a gameplan. Now the team try things in these tests, some folk want them playing the basic stuff again.
All subjective I suppose. The balance between getting the win and capitalising on the skills and strategies available will hopefully improve.

It doesn't matter who his selection panal entails as he is the ultimately makes the calls. And by the way Smal himself said Hayes was picked because he plays for Munster.

Whats rubbish that Kidney ultimately makes the calls (he does hes the manager in case you didn't notice :)) or that Smal stated Hayes was starting because of where he comes from (he did in an interview the other day)?

That's not what he meant when he said "where he comes from". He was referring to Hayes' experience.
