Well,as I suspected from the wording on the letter from the NCT back in May "free periodic inspection".which I printed up here a few posts back.

I got my free NCT this morning,no haggling or anything,he just asked for my name and the keys and said its free.
Dont know whether it was the 8 weeks for an appointment or the 6 weeks from that date for a test date.

He had a list of about 10 "free periodic inspections" for today in front of him.
This is good for public relations.

My car passed well within tolerances, wouldnt expect anything less from a non restored 20 year old MX-5:).

Booked it in May and they gave me a date next August. Just rang them there to hear that the "procedure" is to pay on the date and send the receipt to head office where they will check your booking history to see if you're eligible for a refund. Doesn't inspire confidence at all.

Sounds very like the PROCEDURE used by the private clamping firms, who never give refunds.

If you are entitled to a free NCT test then you shouldn't have to pay first and then let them decide if they want to refund you.
I would ring them again and ask them if this procedure is part of their contract with our government.

don't know if this has been covered but we are soon to be getting our '82 car back on the road after 2/3 years off.now i kinda understand with the nct and the gards but what about the tax as we can't tax it without an nct because of the lapse in time?

oh.when i phoned up i was told i had to fill out a form to apply as the car hadn't been taxed for a few years and on the form you have to fill out the nct details.

I suspect what it's looking for is a Certificate of Roadworthiness. This isn't an NCT, and only applies to commercial vehicles.

Several years ago you did need an NCT to tax your car. This is no longer the case but some of the older tax renewal forms are still floating around.
You can just ignore that section when taxing the car.

The nct service is a joke
I rang up today and was it was all booked up for July and August and could give me nothing..but when I mentioned the free test they said I was on the Priority list and any cancellations I will get and would have something within 2 weeks but my insurance company says i cant get insurance on car without a date

My brother lives in Armagh and his car was up for testlast Monday .. he rang up mot centre and was given a date that same day and 2 the tuesday morning at Armagh so what the hell is wrong across the border that you have to wait so long.. then the nct have a cheek of bringing in a 1 year test for cars over 10 years old and they can not handle even the 2 year car test .. very silly and very greedy but more money for them and to hell with everyone else..
Seems like we have monkeys running this country and the services( sorry monkeys could do a better job)and it really is a FARCE..Really does make me very angry..

i know i can test my southern reg car in the north and my insurance company will accept this they say...
