I think there's a clause for heroin users. That's what the wife tells me when I need to eat my parrots

It wouldn't really be a pet if your contemplating killing it

Pets are property, just like your cows or sheep.
    Wok away.

Wouldn't it depend what kind of pet it was?

I'd presume that with dogs it'd be illegal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭nibtrix

I have no idea whether it's legal to butcher and eat your own pet, but interestingly if you run over a dog you're legally obliged to report it, if you run over a cat you can toss it to the side of the road and be on your way. Something to do with legal property laws I think.

So maybe you can eat a cat but not a dog?

I'm guessing there can't be any laws against eating a pet - what if you had a pet cow or pet pig? Most of us eat those animals every day. The only difference is that you kill it yourself rather than buy it from the butcher...

    Em...please don't do that.

Whats the pets name? How long have you had it ? Does it love you? Does it wag it's tail when you enter the room?

Why so? If it's done in a humane way with no cruelty then it's not likely to be illegal.

Make sure to post up pictures so we can see how you get on. Remember not to allow the stomach acids to come up - spoils the meat ;)

I think I read somewhere that pets like being killed.

My older brother lived down the country with a plot of land, had two pet pigs, one named rasher and the other sausage, they were both eaten after a year. :p

If it was legal, it would be taxable.

A French chef I knew said they taste a whole lot better, a rabbit or a cow say, that you've given a lot of love and attention to over the years.
A nicer taste of the meat.

What if the pet was a chihuahua or something? It would hardly be worth the effort for the stingy bit of meat you would get off it

Didn't Gordon Ramsey raise some lambs in his back garden for one of his cooking shows?

Hope so, I'm sitting by my goldfish bowl with a little fishing rod I fashioned from a lolly pop stick, thread and a safety pin.

Yep, The F Word. The lambs were called Gavin & Charlotte and they eventually went to live with Victoria Beckham but they were slaughtered for the show.

The also raised 2 cows called David & Elton in another season of the same show and they were also slaughtered for the show.

I just realised how much detail I have included in this post......slight Gordon Ramsey obsession.

Didn't Gordon also raise two pigs with the help of his kids? I seem to remember him feeding one of them beer with their food to see if it helps give the meat any flavour.:pac:

check this link out on the something awful forums. some dude raises his own rabbits, kills them, prepares them and cooks various dishes with them and posts tutorials and stuff about it

As far as I'm aware its something to do with the fact that you need a licence for the dog.

It would be interesting to find out (even if you were never actually going to do it) whether it was legal alright.

I should declare myself the in house Gordon Ramsey expert *sigh*

They did a thing where they basically raised the animals that made up a full English breakfast or something. Pigs, 2 little cows and chickens. Janet Street-Porter took them in and raised them like pets and yes, they were eventually slaughtered.

I just can't see it being worthwhile tbh... by the time you buy the pet, the cage/bed/tank needed, feed it up, look after it, butcher it etc it just can't be nice enough to be worth all the trouble, so much easier to go to the local butchers...

I have to say I think there's something mentally wrong with someone who would rear an animal from day one and "love" it like you say, then butcher it and eat it. It's not like I don't eat meat myself but to care for one for some time and then butcher it and eat it? I couldn't do it myself, I'd get sick at the thoughts of it tbh.:(

They eat cats and dogs in Switzerland.

Not a lot of people know that. ;)
SWITZERLAND: CAT EATING IN RURAL AREAS (2003, 2004)

In June 2003, Animal protection groups in Switzerland became concerned about the increasing popularity of dog and cat meat, especially in rural areas of the country. The meat and fat of cats and dogs was also believed to have medicinal qualities. Slaughtering pets for their meat is prohibited under Swiss law but the meat is available on the black market.

In January 2004, Reuters reported that Swiss culinary traditions include puppies and kittens. While many European countries prohibit the eating of cats and dogs, in some rural parts Switzerland the only prohibition is on the trading and distribution of pet meat products. Private consumption of cat and dog is permissible. Swiss animal welfare groups say it is hard to estimate how many pets end up salted and smoked, or in Swiss frying pan, each year. Animal protection legislation is unlikely to end this longstanding tradition because meals served in private homes are none of the state's business.

There is a waste-not-want-not logic to the consumption of pets. As with many countries, many farm cats and farm dogs are not neutered. When the farm's cats or dogs have offspring, there are surplus ones which will be killed. Since they are going to be killed, they might as well be eaten. Despite laws in many European countries, the rural habit might be even more widespread. Several years ago a man in a rural town in France was reportedly put on local animal rescuers' blacklists after regularly adopting (or buying) kittens for his own consumption.

    Meh.
I've seen it in Morocco. One minute your petting the sheep, 10 minutes later your eating it's fried liver. It's probably a lot healthier and a lot more humane than we way we get our meat here.

Can you not just go in and pick the one you want anymore? It's been over 16 years since we got our dog there.

    .

i thiiiink maybe cats are officially regarded as "vermin" rather than pets. i know, way harsh tai. i can't back this up, but somebody who owns a cat told me that's how the law saw it, in the UK anyway.

I think you can indeed pick the one you want, but if the experience of my daughters is anything to go by, you have to pay them for injections etc. Probably 80-100 euro. Expensive curry huh? Unless you're adopting a Great Dane.

    Joking biko OK?*

*The poster does not condone the eating of dogs
