Women walk topless through US city in protest

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7557632/Women-walk-topless-through-US-city-in-protest.html
Organiser Ty MacDowell, 20, said the protest in Portland, Maine, was aimed at showing the double standards in the state of Maine.
Men are allowed to walk down the street shirtless but, although not illegal, women are too afraid to go topless.
Police gave the two dozen women an escort as they bared their breasts for a stroll through Maine's biggest city.

Hundreds of onlookers, mostly men, turned out to watch the topless demo.
MacDowell said she was upset that many of the men were taking photos on their mobile phones at the spectacle.
She said: "I'm really upset by the men ... watching it like it's a parade."
Maine has some of the most relaxed nudity laws in the US. Women are allowed to go topless, but very few choose to strip off for fear of being ogled.
Maine's nudity laws only come into action when men or women expose their lower half.

"I'm really upset by the men ... watching it like it's a parade." Has she just been born? :D

The woman saying a 10 year old girl shouldn't see that. WTF? Is she so ashamed of her body that she thinks girls shouldn't see other femininity?

Some people's jaws hit the ground, plenty of men showed up with cameras, and others - including parents with their children - were just plain offended, as almost two dozen topless women marched in Maine's largest city.

The women drew a crowd of over 500 onlookers when they shed their shirts and marched in downtown Portland on Saturday to promote what they call "equal-opportunity public toplessness."

Organizer Ty MacDowell said the point of the march was that a topless woman out in public shouldn't attract any more attention than a man who walks around without a shirt.

    Good luck with that.

According to The Portland Press Herald, by the end of the march more than 500 people had amassed - a mix of marchers, young men snapping photos, oglers and people just out enjoying a warm sunny day.

"We should be able to walk down the street and not have this many men taking pictures of us," a participant shouted according to CBS affiliate WGME.

It's not illegal for a woman to be topless in public in Maine, although it is illegal in many other states.

Police said there were no incidents or arrests

Only in America, pah! They protest against abortion in Ireland! Seems slightly redundant with it already being illegal and all.

(For the love of whatever you believe in, don't turn this thread into an abortion debate. Please.)

There's no real argument against banning toplessness in women but allowing it in men. It's not like breasts are a sexual organ or anything. I somehow get the feeling if women going topless was normal, western men wouldn't have the obsession with breasts that they do. I look forward to that time.

So to protest getting ogled when they take their tops off in public they took their tops off in public and were disappointed when they were ogled while doing so?

Yup, makes about as much sense as anything else going on these days.

This is what makes me laugh, men will ogle women until the end of time and vice versa, its in our nature, no amount of protesting will change that

I agree. Women will oogle topless men with defined pecs on display - how is that different ?

on the video - LMAO at the two guys in dresses:D - "free legs now":D

What amazes me more than anything is that this is legal in Maine. I didn't know anywhere in the us was this liberal on nudity. Its positively German.

Well we are always moaning about the lack of protest here.

Tits out protesting about Tits in Dail Eireann.

    Protest marches, RISE in popularity.

Protest urging REDUCTIONS in the Public Service.

    Gardai urge SCREENING of protesters.

Marches show a BOUNCE in popularity.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

as for the "if it's not illegal, what were they protesting for?" question, i imagine it was protesting how women don't feel free to go topless, despite the law.
similarly many people refer to Take Back the Night marches as "a protest against rape and violence on our streets". yes rape is already illegal, but many people still feel unsafe on our streets at night, the march is about raising awareness etc.

and while simply staring may not be a crime, maybe these women still fear they will be subject to sexual harassment -either verbal or physical, if they walk down the streets shirtless, even though they are within their rights. so i wouldn't call it the most redundant protest ever.

i doubt the organizer was really surprised people looked, seeing as it was a protest and all, but i see nothing wrong with her voicing her disappointment that people were taking pictures on their phones and stuff.

Breast in the wests' primary function has shifted from feeding babies to their sexualisation.
I agree though, although breasts will always be an obsession with men, I think they would be less of an obsession if there was les taboo over having them out in public. When on a beach in the Med, you see women with no bikini tops on, and the only ones drooling are the pasty paddies.
