Apple OS 4.0 Event Confirmed for April 8th.

Apple has sent out invites for their Event for the unveiling of the iPhone OS 4.0.

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/05/apple-holding-iphone-os-4-event-april-8th/

Multitasking and the ability to put contacts on the Homescreen are rumored to be included for 4.0. The fact that the Event is so close to the iPad release means that Multitasking is a big possibility, as it's the one feature people miss on the iPad (aswell as the iPhone).

What's the normal turnaround from unveiling to download with Apple.

I wonder will they announce an iPhone 4 as well as the OS4.0

It will be in beta for a few months. So, probably June or July for the download.

No I wouldnt expect an iPhone 4G at this event. This is only a preview of OS 4.0 so I wouldn't expect it to be released for a month or two.

Sorry for the silly question but does this mean we can update from 3.1.3 to 4.0 and have multitasking when it's available?

Sweet, I had assumed I'd have to wait for the new iphone to come out and upgrade!

    Great news :D

Nobody has any idea until they announce
    a) What is in 4.0 and
    b) System requirements to run them.......

The DEV team will be busy. I'm not giving up my iblacklist for any update..

    You probably still will.

this is just an event to showcase some 4.0 features. nothing will be released until june/july by my reckoning.

although however this should give us some good solid evidence as to what the new iPhone will have.

also it's not certain that 4.0 will indeed run on older phones, no one can say for 100% that it will. my guess is that it will run on 3G and 3G S with a subset of features, not run at all on the 1st gen iPhone and only run fully on the new iPhone.

Definitely, nothing new for 2g users :(

well don't take my word for it. i know nothing bar my own educated guesses judging on what apple have done in the past.

Yes i agree. My guess is that IF Multitasking is apart of 4.0, it will only be available to 3GS users and on the next iPhone. AN FM antenna has been found in the 3GS and the current iPod Touch so this could be another thing that will be enabled on 4.0.

I really hope so, but even if the antenna on the 3GS is useable for FM radio, I can see Apple leaving it disabled so as to encourage people to upgrade to the 4th gen iPhone.

    I know, after no mms.

I'd say they will try to phase out 2g completely.

Jailbroken multi-tasking has been around forever..

so was jailbroken cut/copy/paste but no matter how good jailbroken apps are they will never come close to an official apple app imo and that's coming from someone who has jailbroken their iPhone.

I don't get why 2G owners are complaining. You're running old hardware, old enough to be classified as out of date nearly at this stage. You can't expect a 3 year old (at time of 4.0 probable release) to run the newest OS. That's like me expecting a PC to go from Windows 95 to Vista!

except there's a 12 year gap between the release of 95 and vista (07) which if four fold the time difference between 1st gen iPhone and new iPhone :pac:.

According to some sources there is an FM capable chip in the iPad as well.

12 years ago, I didn't even have a phone! Phones move on a faster scale than PC OSs. Christ, you couldn't even use the internet properly on a phone until about 4 years or so ago. Now I do most of my browsing on it!

Mobile phones are so much easier to replace than PC's ever will be.

in fairness, apart from the touch screen and os, it was out of date when it launched.

You could say the same about all of Apple's Hardware. They sell outdated hardware with stellar software and make a massive profit.

If no radio is mentioned there will be fcuking tears at bedtime. :(

I've only been waiting 3 years for it.

God bless factory unlocked IPhones - 4.0, yes please:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

tbh if the only two things 4.0 brought was:

ability to open more than 8 windows in safari.
    ability to search within a webpage (ctrl/cmd + f).

then i'd be happy, seriously don't understand why they aren't there especially the searching one considering spotlight works so damn well.

Tbh, I'm having difficulty thinking what they can add to the phone. Multitasking would be nice, but not massively important to me. Certainly I could happily do without it, if the API allowed certain apps to "sign in" automatically - such as Skype - and receive messages and calls. Push notifications go halfway here, but it's not ideal.

One thing which does irk me is the inability to add multiple attachments to emails. That should be dead simple and standard.

At a very low level, they could improve the prefetching mechanisms so that popular apps start more quickly. Standard apps like messages and email load instantly, but lightweight downloaded apps still take that little bit longer. It would be nice if lightweight apps (like eirtext) could be "instant on".

I'm probably not a power user, which is why my requirements are so low. For the moment, making it faster and with bigger storage will satisfy me.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

The other halfway house to multitasking would be to allow apps to register a scheduled task that the phone can run every minute, 10 minutes, hour etc. in the background. Combine with push notifications and you're there.

There are FM bits in the 3G also but there's no antenna AFAIK.

I wonder if this will be evolutionary, as opposed to revolutionary (as the 3Gs was to the 3G)?

I can't see what big ticket items they can add/change.

Would like to see a 'homepage' option. With maybe a calender and mail widget - and maybe a bluetooth/wireless toggle option.

I wonder will Apple release their own free Turn-By-Turn Navigation in 4.0. Google and Nokia currently provide this free with their devices and Apple did purchase PlaceBase.

Now that would be class. Would be well impressed with that? Would have to do the whole world though?

6pm our time, Pacific time is 8 hours behind GMT.

Or more scientifically, they're at UTC-7 and we're at UTC+1 (for the moment)

I suppose multi-tasking would be good, although my biggest gripe at the moment is having to constantly type in my FB password every time I open the app. I wish it would let me save it so I don't have to type it each time.

You must be doing it wrong, mine keeps me signed in. Isn't there a "remember me" check box?

I wish I could see my received messages in apps like Eirtext...

I think Apple have to allow access to the sms database or something to facilitate this...

They need to open up access to the calendar DB as well, I've written a desktop weekly scheduler for the Mac that lets me put in events that I do regularly but not regularly enough to auto-repeat them. I'd really love to be able to do the job from my iPhone though.
