Shin splint countering runners?

    Hello

    I'm aware there are methods of running which prevent shin splints but there are also runners for this.;

I used to run a bit but each time when I started to make real progress I would get shin splints and have to stop.

Joined a gym last week and I need a pair of runners anyway so I may as well get comfortable ones even if I don't end up running at the gym, right?

Can anyone recommend a pair and tell me roughly how much they cost?

I hear Asics Gel are very good for this?

    Thanks

It's a bit more complicated...and shin splints can be a total pain to get rid of. It depends too on what you mean by shin splints-people have different symptoms, in different parts of the shin and they are caused by different things. Sometimes "shin splints" refers to medial tibial stress syndrome, where you feel the pain along the inside of the tibia (shin bone). This may be associated with a foot that "over pronates" or rolls in too much. People with this problem often have quite a flat foot. In this case, stability or motion control shoes might help. Asics do have some-like the Kayano and the Gel 2140-but so do all the other brands. It's really individual. If you want a good pair, I'd say go to a specialist running shop where they will actually look at your foot and how you walk and run.
Orthotics can also help-Superfeet green provide good motion control if you want to try an over the counter one.

It depends on what caused the shin splints. A lot of the time it is caused by footwear. Asics shoes are great, but they're split into different categories for different types of footfall so if you're spending 100 euro plus on a pair of runners you'd want to make sure you're getting the right ones. As has been said above, go to a specialist running shop - runways in parnell street or elverys in suffolk street if you're in Dublin, will do a gait analysis to help you pick the correct type of shoe.

Thanks guys, I'll try Elvery's during the week.

The Asics Gel Kayanos are listed at €140 so I'll take comfort knowing the salesperson will have looked at my foot and made an informed decision, pardon the pun :)

just another thought but I used to suffer badly from shin pains and spent a smalll fortion on different runners and inserts which made little difference (including the vibram stuff). In the end I began looking at the way I was running and experimented with both the POSE and CHI running techniques which in the end vertiualiy eliminated the pain even with the same runners I was always using.

I still get pains from time to time on long runs or when I get lazy about my posture but its still much better than it was before.

We always had a lot of guys suffer from shinsplints when they started running, most of them agreed that doing toe taps while sitting around in the evenings or whatever helped them immensely. I used to suffer from them, complete pain in the....shins.

Anyway,toe-taps are a cheaper alternative then trainers at 150squid!

Is there any weight training that would be good for strenghting the shins.

Im getting the orthotics in 3-4 days so hopefully that will help with it.

Very difficult to build up strength (or mass) in that area. Massaging the muscle is probably worth doing. There's one that runs along the outside of the shin bone that is a dirty dog, and difficult to stretch and / or massage, but I saw a sports physio before and she recommended this. Using the thumb. Worked out quite well for me.

They're a tried and tested method we use in D'army.Passed on from generation to generation of Fitness instructors.

Holding your foot about 3 inches off the ground while seated or standing and start by bringing your toes upward without moving your leg and then point them back down again.repeat.repeat.repeat. 20 to 30 reps each foot. you'll start to feel it working the muscles in the shin.
You can use this exercise with your foot turned in, turned out or just straight depending on where you are experiencing the shin-splints.

should you do these while you have slight pain in the shins?

    Hi Folks

Ok, This thread has gone from recommending trainers (OP's thread topic) to diagnosing and offering treatments for "Shin Splints". This constitutes giving medical advice which is against both the forum charter and the posting rules of Boards.ie and needs to stop now.

mrDerek: If you are experiencing painful shins from participating in sports, then you should have your GP or a sports physio diagnose and offer treatment advice. An internet forum is not the place to get this advice.

Note: Shin Splints is often a catch all term for shin pain which can have a number of causes and no single treatment will cure all these causes. This is why the best place to get a diagnosis and treatment advice is from a qualified professional who can examine you properly.

Now please let's get back on topic, which in case anybody forgets is trainer recommendations
