Hi everyone, I run regularly and keep active but want to add a little bit of weight training as would love to tone up and lose a few pounds. How often do you think I should do weights? Also is there any particular amount I should do? Any advice from someone who has succeeded in losing weight or know their stuff? Thanks!:)

This is a good site aimed at women, though there is no real difference in weight training methods for either sex.

Hey I started donig weights at crossfit about 8 months ago and I love it I even joined a weightlifting club when I emigrated to Germany. I only started it in an effort to get Michelle Obama arms but now i'm getting a buzz out of lifting heavier. It's tons funner and for me more effective than jogging ever was.

I find this site:: http://gubernatrix.co.uk/ really good too

I was pretty obsessed with crossfit ireland as it was great fun so I was going about 4-5 times a week over in Germany i'm going about 3-4 times a week as i'm not doing anything else.

I find i've toned up tons i'm alot less flabby, even my stomach and arms which were always brutal. i've also quit carbs so i've lost about 3/4 of a stone in 8 months.

Yeah I have tried the carbs thing but I run a lot so need the energy. Could do without carbs at dinner though. Do you find it hard to eat dinner without carbs. Do you have any tips on what to eat instead?

Will check out crossfit as think its hard to put in proper effort on your own.

I just had ordinary dinners with more veg, pork chops, chicken, steak etc with twice as much veg it's pretty easy when you get used to it and fantastic to have rashers and eggs for breakfast and still lose weight!

Just checked out crossfit website, they are pretty awkward to get to for me. Is there anything similar in town or north side?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

There's informed performance on the northside. It's not crossfit but it might fit what you want.

You don't have to attend a crossfit gym to do crossfit either...It's just best if you can.

hug.. theres a few ways that you can crossfit on your own.. www.crossfit.com and the faq on that site is a good place to start. or here.. http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/start-how.html...

This site also gives daily scaled down versions of the workouts depending on your level of ability with the movements.. ..http://www.crossfitbrandx.com/index.php/forums..

as a side though how much do u currently train? i.e miles p/week etc.
Have you any previous weight training experience ?

Also i would say it would be worth your while calling out to the lads at crossfit.ie in sandyford sometime as they will be able to answer alot of the questions you may have about doing crossfit on your own. they are very helpful.
    Hope that helps. :)

I started doing kettlebells about 4 months ago and i have to say i haven't looked back. I'm a nightmare for starting something up and then losing interest in a matter of weeks. BUt with the kettlebell, there's something about the swinging motion thats conducive to you wanting to repeat it over and over. I really like it.

I started off with an 8 Kig kbell, then bought 2 x 12 kgs and i used a 16kg for just swings. Big difference in strength and over all tightness.

I did 30 mins this morning and I can honestly say i was b*lloxed afterwards. I normally train to some shop bought DVD's (Kettlebell Bootcamp - Angie Miller), (10 minute solution kettlebell, ultimate fat burner) . I also have a couple of workouts on YouTube that I go back to all the time and lastly, I'll sometimes just do 10 / 15mins of the exercises that are on a typical kettlebell workout wall chart.

Thanks everyone. I run with a club speed training and hills at least twice a week, also run on my own. Not sure really how much mileage. Last year a did two marathons so I'm cutting down this year and doing shorter distances. Just feel I would like to something extra to tone me up a bit more.
The kettlebells sounds great, might give that a go. Although wouldnt mind doing a class to learn exactly what to do. Checked the crossfit website, seems a little confusing maybe going out to Sandyford would be a good idea.
Trying to do some weights on my own, know what exercises to do just need to work out a routine to do with the running (what days to do running and when to weights). Dont really want exercise to take over my life! :o

I do some crossfit workouts on my own in the gym and it's grand, although if you're looking for motivation then you might be better off going to a class. It's really not confusing though, just have a read over those websites, and it shouldn't take over your life..it should be an enjoyable part of it:) If you're focusing on the running maybe try the crossfit endurance workouts http://www.crossfitendurance.com/.

yeah.. the kettlebells are a great tool. so so versatile. i would defo check them out. and agreed .. at the beginning crossfit can seem a bit complex but stick with it believe me, its a seriously underated type of training. !! it will compliment the shorter running your doing these days.
couple of sites to give you an idea.. www.kettlebellesireland.com, www.thetransformationcatalyst.com( blog).
