Muppets attack US Frigate

So it turns out Somali pirates aren't too bright. 3 of them attacked the USS Nicholas, a Frigate with a crew of over 200 and enough fire-power to sink several ocean liners; in nothing but a skiff with small arms and rpgs.

Unsurprisingly their attempted hijack did not go according to plan. Their boat was sunk and they we're captured. The Nicolas then proceeded to capture their mothership and two more pirates on board.

    LOL Great stuff.

The sad part is that more than likely they will just be let go eventually.

Very apt username. however, in the interests of keeping in line with the AH tradition of pointing out grammatical errors I direct your attention to the incorrect use of the apostrophe in the emboldened word.

The on-land equivalent would be attempting to rob a gun store with a plastic knife.

It must have been fun target practice for the crew though, they disabled the skiff with no harm done.

I for one believe the Americans account of the incident. I mean they wouldn't just attack the Somalis and then claim it was self-defence, would they?

Feck 'em either way. Those Somali pirates need a good kicking.

Believe it or not, that's the fourth naval vessel that the Somalis have gone after. Two have been American, two French. Granted, one each of the French and American were logistical supply ships, which if it weren't for the fact that they were painted haze gray, could be easily mistaken for civilian freighters, but the other French ship attacked was also a frigate.

In no case thus far have they been successful.

Can't fault their ambition at least. A bit more of that can-do attitude wouldn't go amiss.

They are out there to defend shipping and take care of pirates, what possible reason could they have for lieing about something everyone knows they are there to do.

Yeah I guess they could have been fishermen that just happen to use AK47's to catch fish instead of nets:D

Interesting point! I wonder how many unreported failed attacks ended that way?

thing is that muppets can win in asymmetric warfare
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cole_bombing

and war games have shown this
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/12/washington/12navy.html
American officers have acknowledged that they have been studying anew the lessons from a startling simulation conducted in August 2002. In that war game, the Blue Team navy, representing the United States, lost 16 major warships — an aircraft carrier, cruisers and amphibious vessels — when they were sunk to the bottom of the Persian Gulf in an attack that included swarming tactics by enemy speedboats.

“The sheer numbers involved overloaded their ability, both mentally and electronically, to handle the attack,” said Lt. Gen. Paul K. Van Riper, a retired Marine Corps officer who served in the war game as commander of a Red Team force representing an unnamed Persian Gulf military. “The whole thing was over in 5, maybe 10 minutes.”

If the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, proved to the public how terrorists could transform hijacked airliners into hostage-filled cruise missiles, then the “Millennium Challenge 2002” war game with General Van Riper was a warning to the armed services as to how an adversary could apply similar, asymmetrical thinking to conflict at sea.

It's interesting the way the pirates are organised , they have to pay people on shore and village elders and hire equipment and then the profits are split according between those who financed it , those taking part depending on their roles and weapons

    BTW
Has anyone stopped to consider the effect on climate change of clamping down on pirates ?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 93,596 Mod ✭✭✭✭Capt'n Midnight

Actually thinking about it the Israeli's and Iraqi's have carried out fatal attacks on US warships without retaliation.

Even the Aussies have taken out a US destroyer but they used an aircraft carrier

It would seem to me that the true correlation is between the overall pirate effect and global warming, not merely the amount of pirates. Killing off ineffective pirates should be fairly innocuous when it comes to climate change.

    WTF, couldn't believe this sh|t.

Their latest hijacking was actually nearer to India than Somalia.

Amazing that these arseholes operate in dingies with propellers and they can get out that far.

    They (Pirates) lost.

Maybe they're targeting the Naval vessels. I've heard that these are rebels fighting foreigners that are dumbing waste and overfishing they're waters because there's no government to stop them. Maybe they've switched to military targets due to the international outrage that surrounded the kidnappings.
