    Update on the Munster Open
We have been working hard in the last few weeks to bring a very high standard competition and have confirmed details as below. This is open to all, if you are training BJJ, NOGI, MMA, get ready

    Saturday June 26th
Sports Hall, Colaiste Chriost Ri, Capwell Road, Turners Cross, Cork

The event is going to be Pre Registration Only, which will be available from Monday next, and will remain open until the week of the competition.

(We are testing an online system and will have a final price for monday- it will be close to €25)

Everyone will get at least 3 fights.

There will be GI and NOGI, the entry fee covers both.

All fights will be refereed in accordance with http://www.ibjjf.org/rules.htm

    GI

    As per ibjjf weight brackets
    • Ultra Heavyweight: +100,5 kg
    • Super Heavyweight: -100,5 kg
    • Heavyweight: under -94,3 kg
    • Medium Heavyweight: -88,3 kg
    • Middleweight: under -82,3 kg
    • Lightweight: under -76 kg
    • Featherweight: under -70 kg
    • Light Featherweight: -64 kg
    • Roosterweight: under -57 kg
There will be a female division.
If there is enough interest there will be a juniors division

There will be GI absolute with Black Eagle GI prizes for each winner

    NOGI

    Under 76kg or Over 76kg

Beginner Up to1 year Rules restricted to White / Blue belt level

    Intermediate
1 - 3 Years Rules restricted to Purple Belt Level

Advanced 3+ years Rules as Brown / Black Belt

This was the format that was run in shannon last time and it proved very succesfull with very entertaining fights

We will post a schedule in time before the competition so that people know when to arrive. First fight will be 10am

The usual stuff applies, weigh in before the fight, no changing brackets on the day, make yourself aware of the rules,

The venue is very close to the city for anyone that is going to get public transport, and there is lots of parking available.

I think there was a bus organised from Dublin the last time so if anyone is willing to do that please post.

    Liam

When you say everyone will get at least 3 fights do you mean one gi, one nogi and one absolute fight or will the gi and nogi be round robin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭r_obric

you will get 2 fights with the GI, in your weight and absolute.
    And then one nogi fight

    Registration is open at

    http://munsteropenbjj.blogspot.com/

Registration fee €25 will be collected on the day.

Just a note on the weights.
We will take your weight category for the GI as being for the NOGI

The NOGI brackets will be either under or over 76kg.

GI weights as always are with the GI on. If anyone is over 76kg with the GI, and will be under 76kg for NOGI then let me know.

Hey guys, total beginners questions here, gotta start somewhere though right :o

    what is absolute?

do you have to fight both Gi & no-Gi? I thought you might be able to choose to do one or the other....

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭pablohoney87

Absolute is an open weight category. i.e. no weight classes you can come up against anyone in your experience division.

absolute is open weight all fighters by belt.

you dont have to do all 3, you can choose only to fight GI in your weight bracket, GI absolute or NOGI or all 3 up to yourself

with the new the red cow to the jack lynch tunnel is about 2.5 hours, and about 15 mins from the tunnel to the venue. so yea you will make the weigh ins, we will confirm the schedule the week of the event and give an accurate time when you need to be there

if the bru hostel is full there is another one around the corner from it

there are a few people registered blue belt +100.5kg so you will have fights in your weight bracket, and you have the advantage of being one of the biggest in the absolute ;);)

i was always under the impression that at irish nogi comps there was a 'gentlemans understanding' that once u had won an intermediate category, u automatically entered in the advanced category the next time u competed.

I was under the impression that this was an 'unwritten rule'? Maybe i have it wrong..

    Anyone?

    Anyone?

Peoples who have won brackets before should move up, people should be looking to challenge themselves and see how their level is.

    just a quick outline,
If anyone is a purple belt they are advanced,
Blue belt is either intermediate or advanced,
White belts are either beginner if they only started training in the last 12 months, otherwise they are intermediate, if someone started training in the last year and wants to go intermediate do so. same with going advanced with less than 3 years training,
All beginners would be white belt in the GI

There are some people who only train NOGI so
    under a year beginner
    1-3 years intermediate
    3+years advanced

Really? I didn know that? ive been training just over 2 years and there are guys like michael devlin and artemij sitenkov in my advanced division which is a huge step up for me, but i think im ready to take the challange on now:) should be great fun either way:)

Unfortunately the Mendes brothers are not going to be at the Munster open comp but they sent this message and asked it be passed on to the BJJ community in the UK and Ireland (this has been translated from Portuguese):

"We would like to invite the entire jiu jitsu community of Ireland to Munster Open Jiu Jitsu Championship, it will be a great phase for jiu jitsu in Ireland and will be really good if everyone supports this to raise the level of the event. We were in Ireland last year, and we could say that we learned a little about the people, the beauty of the country and the jiu jitsu of Ireland. It was an incredible experience, we liked a lot, the country is very beautiful and the people were very kind and were very interested in learning jiu jitsu. We hope that we can come back to learn more about Ireland, we would like to send a hug to everybody and to remind everyone that rivalries are a part of sport but we cannot let this hinder our progress in our jiu jitsu. We always need to find importance through evolution. Big Hug to everybody.”

We're still in touch from time to time and I'll definitely have them back at some stage, but getting guys in is expensive with flights, fees etc. and we're already bringing Robert Drysdale in July and probably someone else in October. Maybe early in 2011. We'll see.
