Too much fat?

    Ok so my typical diet looks like this:

    Morning: one big bowl of porridge made mostly with water with a tea-spoon of coconut oil and a tea-spoon of flax seed plus a handful of berries

    Mid-morning snack: I often skip this. When I do eat something I eat a piece or two of fruit such as melon or an apple or a Satsuma

    Lunch: Two cups of steamed green veg with a tea-spoon of olive oil on top. One egg boiled or fried in a bit of butter, plus about 100 grms of prosciutto ham/mozzarella cheese/smoked salmon (I alternate between this).

    Dinner: two cups of roasted green veg (trying to do this with butter these days as I read olive oil not suitable), one onion and half a sweet potato all roasted, sometimes half an avocado, piece of fish and once a week 150 grms fried (in butter) organic mince

    Before bed (around 10-ish): One glass of organic full-fat cow’s milk or a few spoonfuls of greek yogurt or half a tub of full-fat cottage cheese plus a big bowl of my home-made kefir made with full-fat milk. Most days, one or two small pieces of 85% green and black’s chocolate.

    I have between 2 and 4 cheat meals a week, when I meet up with friends and they always bring pasta dishes, cus-cus dishes etc. I also drink one to two coffees a week, with a little bit of sugar (I always forget to take my xylitol out with me).

    The amount of fat that we consume is for a satiating/fulfilling purpose. It’s mainly in the olive oil, butter (to use as cooking fat), and full-fat dairy. At that, I do not go through more than one tub of cottage cheese a week and a tub of greek yogurt a week. I realize that fat has a lot more calories per gram than carbs or protein but although I have not counted I do not think I ingest those many calories in total, as usually portion sizes are on the small size (never ate hugely anyway). I do not need to loose weight but would not like to put on any either. But since we eat too many carbs to go into ketosis I am worried that perhaps I eat too much fat? Any opinions?

    BTW I am a middle-aged (sounds so bad!) mum of two, small built, 160cm and 54 kilos, with very low levels of activity other than running after the kids around the house!

    I think you're not eating enough fat. You may have an unfounded fear, as most people do, of consuming it.

    As well as being an energy source fat forms the building blocks for hormones and cell membranes, is necessary for the absorption of several fat soluble vitamins and plays a part in the cushioning of various organs.

    It's only since the 1980s that we've been advised to eat low fat diets. We are told that fat makes us put on weight and that saturated fat causes heart disease, neither of which is true. We're told polyunsaturated fats are the healthiest when, in fact, they are the least healthy and should be avoided as much as possible.

    most of that i would agree with - sally fallon and mary enig have been banging on about this point for donkeys years.

    I think your total fat intake is grand and wayyyyy better than what i see on a daily basis with clients

    fat intake is fine IMO .. you are consuming more than enough, but not too much!
