I was in or around the obese category in the BMI index so in the new year I lost about 2 stone through exercise and sensible diet but have found my alcohol tolerance is about 50% of what it was, I can't handle much drink at all before I get drunk, anyone similar experience or advise to increase the tolerance?

im not sure what to say here tbh, except that having low blood sugar can intensify the effects of alcohol.. other than that I dont see a problem .. getting drunk quicker = cheap date :D:p

You'll spend half as much money. Is that not good? :p

I was not in the same boat as you, but did start a new training schedule last week which foe me is a some what tough. Then at the weekend I couldn't drink for squat (NO pun intended:D) After three glasses of wine on Friday I was well on my way. The on Saturday I went to watch the match, 3 pints, home and in bed out for the count at 9:30!!!

We (wife and i) don't drink during the week, and look forward to a few at the weekend. She's now calling me a cheep date!! But I guess its better for me in the long run.

Well done with the weight loss keep up the good work.

I'm down about 4 stone since August 09 and I find as well my tolerance has gone way down, i like it because i dont spend as much in town anymore!
Yours is naturally going to go down however it might have shot down quite a bit because you lost weight so quick, the recommended amount to lose is 2 lbs a week so 28 lbs in 8 weeks is very impressive. my advice is to stay away from rounds with your mates and have a cheeky glass of water now and again.

I have a significantly lower tolerance than before too. I don't see the problem tbh. As everyone else says....it's cheaper.

I lost 5 and a half stone - my tolerance to alcohol reduced mighitly. I find that if you keep quite fit, your tolerance is lower too.

    Cheap night out though!

running down the stairs in eddie rockets - puking in the toilet - coming back up and putting a tenner on a table for food you never even ordered before walking home in the rain, getting home and falling asleep on the stairs with the front door open.

    Never. Again.

Now i stick to guiness on a night out and will prob go through 3 or 4 the whole night. Most nights i am the sober one minding people.

Then there are the nights like i stated above. EEK!

Cheers for all the replies, I suppose I have to re-evaluate my limits when it comes to drinking, just going to find it very hard to do a long session, will have to break it up with water and see how I go.

I find it's the tiredness from training that get's me drunker easier. If I can I get a bit of an aul nap and a cup of coffee before going out I'm grand. Then my tolerance is about the same as it ever was. If I don't do above steps it can on occassion get messy if I try to drink as normal.

Yeah, eat something too - if your going on a nightout, you will drink faster when with a group of mates.
A big meal before a session should really help

im in the same boat, i lost weight and got a lot fitter over the past 12 months or so. i used to be probably the biggest drinker in terms of tolerance in my group of mates, now im nowhere near it. it took a fair few nights of being a complete writeoff before i realised it had gone down! cheaper nights though now that ive adjusted!

Lowered tolerance is on of the great benefits of weightloss! cheaper as mentioned but less overall alcohol going through your system too. If you eat before hand it will slow down absorption a lot, I purposely try NOT to eat much before so I can drink less and have the same effect. I know a guy who brags about how much he drinks, he goes off out of the pub and is know to have sneaky burgers, even sneaky full chinese meals. I do not like the idea of eating, you are taking in loads of calories just so you can drink a load more calories. I found my weightloss began to snowball since as I got thinner I drank less, so took less calories in and so kept dropping.

If you have less fat and are fitter you should notice that you are getting undrunk much quicker.

Well trying to describe the act of going from drunk to sober in the most stilted prose possible.

being fitter certainly helps with tolerance / recovery ... maybe due to speed of metabolism .. but im not sure what, if any difference body fat makes tbh

I have heard it said one reason women get drunk more on the same amount is due to a naturally higher BF level, i.e. the average 11 stone woman would end up with a higher blood alcohol level than a 11 stone man drinking the same amount.

    http://www.brad21.org/alcohol_and_women.html
Women are more sensitive to alcohol:

    * Since, on the average, women are smaller than men, equivalent doses of alcohol produce higher levels of concentration in women's bodies.

    * The average female carries more body fat than the average male, and body fat contains little water. Consequently, most women have less body water to dilute the alcohol, leaving a higher concentration of alcohol in women's bodies.

    * Alcohol dehydrogenase is a metabolizing enzyme that helps the body get alcohol out of its system. Women have less of this enzyme than men, so more of what women drink enters the bloodstream as pure alcohol.
    * Fluctuating hormone levels in women means that the intoxicating effects of alcohol will set in faster when their estrogen levels are higher, premenstrually. Also, alcohol increases the estrogen levels- birth control pills or other medications with estrogen will cause the intoxicating effects to set in at lower levels of BAC.
