    Folks,

Spoke to Gay Howard of Stamullen yesterday and he said to spread the word that the Stamullen GP on Sunday the 18th will have a separate A3/A4 race also. Not sure if it will be a combined or two separate races.

This goes up Snowtown which I reckon is a wall so should break up well. Think the A1/2's go up it 7 times:eek:.

Will post up more when I hear.

    Shaun

That's great news. Going by the calendar I thought they'd restricted A4's from it. It's a savage race. Did it last year and reckon it's the hardest course I've ever done.

Will open my season with this one :) and its not so far from dublin which is a huge plus

    Any MMR or BRT links?

This sounds like one I might like to try.

I think this is the route. It includes Snowtown

Is the wall where MMR has the 4% gradient? (I am well aware it averages and way underplays these things.)

yeah around three miles. I'm gutted:mad: it always seems so much worse. The climb is split into 3 sections so perhaps it is an average. Damned statitics proving stuff.

you may well forget about a 4% gradient. Havent had a look at MMR yet but if it comes up from Greenanstown I reckon their is a 20% section. will have alook

That route was mapped by me. I can't remember where I got it from. Probably from the Swords website somewhere. I don't know for certain if it is the right route.

The Monie Nolan is on the day before which is also worth checking out. Nice hard course with a climb and an uphill finish.

EDIT: Looks like they've a race on Friday night as well. Don't know anything about that one. The legs would be well and truly toasted by the end of that weekend.

It does average and I have seen 3-4% averages on MMR that have turned out to have 15% ramps on them! It is of course always different in a race and even a shallow gradient turns much higher but I imagine there is a lot steeper than 4% in there. I don't find MMR great at giving a realistic picture. Anyone with a Garmin?

pretty sure it goes up Snowtown from Grennanstown.

Dont know if this will work but very short section @18% on MMR http://www.mapmyride.com/create_new

edit: it didnt work. If someone instructs me how to post a screenshot I will put it up

Give this a go. Use the "Capture a screen area" option.

@ Lumen I am viewing the intertube via Safari but on a pc will that affect it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Stuck the section from Clinstown to Clashford into BRT, I much prefer their non-normalised (or whatever you want to call what MMR do) elevations:

Doesn't matter, it will just capture whatever is on the screen when you press the appropriate hotkey. The file will be saved to your computer, then you can attach it to a new post.

Seriously - what's the issue with posting race results here?

The warning was that it may not contain race results, simply more boring blogs from total losers who enjoy cycling but just aren't up to the high standards set by some.

Maybe everyone should post they came 1st following this one, would that be best? Everyone's a winner!

Alternately, Alt+PrtSc on Windows will capture the current window, no additional software required.

Yeah, but then you risk exposing the fact that you have ten different porn folders open whilst browsing boards.

    So, who's going?

I want to do one of these but probably not both Sat and Sun. Anyone have any more info on them so I can make a choice better than random?

From what I've heard the Friday & Saturday races are flat. Sunday is hilly.

Will probably do Friday & Sunday myself

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

I'm hoping to do the two, but that will depend on how free I am this weekend and lifts. It looks like Saturday's race will be handicapped, while Sunday will have separate races A3 and A4.

The Monie Nolan is run over a tight enough circuit, with some technical parts. It has one short enough climb and an uphill finish.

The Stamullen GP features a tougher climb and would definitely favour the lads with the climbing legs. It's one of the big races of the year and there is a real sense of occasion about it. If I was doing one, I'd do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

Sunday sounds better to me then - haven't really had a go at a hillier race yet and I think I prefer the way a rise thins the group out a bit. I'm sure it'll be horrific. I might give the Saturday a go too, but not sure.

Anyone in the Orwell/Lucan/Tiernan's/etc. league going to give 4 consecutive days racing a go? :P

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

I think you'd be well suited to Stamullen, Tom. Just mark the moves on the climb and you could find yourself in contention. I think you're right too about hillier races being less hairy. The bunch on Sunday was definitely taking it handy before it hit the hills in ancitipation of what was to come and it was much more civilised.

I briefly contemplated the four day thing but I wouldn't be able to get out of work on time to make Friday's race.

It's not just about making it less hairy; I like the way a hill rewards the strongest rider and gets rid of the fatter lurkers hoping to poach a placing in the gallop having done absolutely no work whatsoever up to that point (I know, I know - that's racing for you - but it's not what I like).

Hey. Some of us fatsos have been known to do a bit of work in a race. ;)

A hill rewards the rider with the best power/weight ratio for that gradient. Not the strongest rider by any means.

Captain bloody pedantic to the rescue. You know what I mean, there's no free-loading on a 10% gradient, that's all.

    Hi all,

I'm with Stamullen RC so this is the skinny at the mo.

Friday - Handicapped. Flat circuit probably reduced to 5 laps rather than 6 due to light etc. Start 7.20pm sharp

    Saturday
    - Handicapped. Fast circuit with couple of decent drags shortly after passing through Stamullen village. Start 12.30pm sharp

    Sunday - Three seperate races for 1. A1/A2 together 2. A3 & 3. A4
Circuit is approx 11m/17.5k with 6 laps for A1/A2, 4 laps for A3, 2 laps for A4. She's hilly alright! Start 12.30pm sharp

Weather forecast is good for 3 days at present...bit cooler than lately, but dry. Circuits will be well marshalled & circuit surfaces in as good a nick as possible.

Hope to see a good turnout and that we all get around the chosen courses safely. Enjoy & please ride sensibly.

    T ;)

Is 35km not a bit on the short side for the A4s?
I don't know the course and I hear its v tough, but it still seems fairly short.

It is, yes. Newbridge was the same, a very short A4 race. Somehow I doubt if I'll be sorry about the length come Sunday though.

The Newbridge GP was like that and whilst there was some moaning initially I think it worked out well - a decent sized bunch stayed together for the most part but there were plenty of opportunities for matches to get burnt and breaks to occur.

    It's still only April. :)

I'd been hoping to do this one but it's quite a distance to travel from the west for 35k. 1 more lap would be ideal.
