How diet soda can make you fat.

    Interesting video that i came accross talking about the bodies PH. It will hit on diet soda in the last 3 or so minutes.

    Im not sure on the scientific accuracy of what is been said in the video, so those that do might enlighten but thought it was an intersting video none the less.

    I'm still not sure about acid/base balance, I've read really convincing reviews both in favour of the theory and ones calling it new age rubbish. I just don't think there's enough research in this area yet to make a call. But from an epidemiology point of view, hunter-gatherer diets seem to be in perfect acid/base balance.

    There are lots of studies showing diet soda such as diet coke can cause weight gain, but they didn't propose a mechanism.

    I've heard one possible mechanism is that it breaks the link in your brain between sweetness and calories. Normally, you eat something sweet, your body knows a certain amount of calories is coming in, and eventually it calls a halt.

    Drink a lot of diet soda, so the body gets the sweetness without the cals, and eventually the body stops trusting its taste buds to tell it what is going in. Then you eat something with the full whack of cals, but your body is afraid it's a trick and gets you to eat some more, just to be safe.

    Sort of like filling up on extremely bulky foods: at first the body feels full, then it realises it needs more calories and insists you are hungry even when your belly is bulging. By the way, this is why giving young babies solids too early does not make them sleep longer. They have a full belly but know they are still hungry, so they get really cranky.

    I don't know if I believe that. I've never noticed, or seen evidence that people who drink diet drinks eat more. Also, they'd have to eat a lot more to make up for the sugar in soda.

    I heard it could be because the body is expecting sugar, and gets insulin ready, this causes an insulin spike despite there being no sugar. I have no idea if this has any basis in truth.

    I have heard that, pavlovian theory/response. I have also heard the theory could go the opposite way, people who drink diet drinks all the time might mean the body gets used to sweet tastes, so you would not get spikes when you do drink actual full sugar drinks.

    I cannot understand how the lemons & oranges would be alkaline, also he had potatoes on the alkaline side but put baked ones in the acid side later one, is it just the baking? He also said diet drinks have phosphoric acid, I have only ever see this in diet cola drinks. Where would orange juice fall into this, of diet drinks like club orange light which is ~11% orange juice.
