Big_G I certainly agree with those comments too and don't want to give the impression that I like the med card scheme or advocate building a practice that would be dependent on it. Far from . I hate it.

But..... things have changed in the country lately. We can't presume the med card pts walking in our doors now are all useless layabouts. We have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Many of them have recently lost good jobs. They won't always remain med card pts. Others are the genuine poor who actually deserve a card.

I had a working civil servent yesterday who qualified for a med card due to all the pay cuts she took, so the profile has definitely changed.

I dont think I ever treated any patient differently if they were on the medical card, thats not the point. In a way you have to approach the patients needs differently as the types of treatments open to you both are limited. And certainly dentists can build a practice out of only medical card patients.

I think the issue here is that people recently have been asking a lot of questions such as
"Can I get expensive totally elective complex prosthetic work on my medical card"
"Can I get braces on the medical card, BTW I am 28 years old, couldn't be bothered before but now I have a card I want them for free"

The questions are valid, but surprise or outrage at the obvious answer is not.....

The medical card is not a Health care free pass. Its a crutch to allow you access to BASIC medical and dental services that you otherwise cannot afford. its a system that would rather give a little treatment to 100 people than a lot of treatment to one person, community health and rightly so.

Georgie - dont jump ship just yet, everywhere is the same.... although you might be able to practice dentistry on every continent yet.......

i got a root canal on my medical card like a month ago with ****mod edit no names*** and didn't have to pay a penny. the only thing is that it wasn't for cosmetic reasons and medical cards don't cover anything cosmetic so you'd have to check it out for yourself.

Yes, indeed, just get your kin to grab the pliers(is it safe) and a shot of brandy, strap you to a chair and yank out those gnashers that have been in your head for about forty years, then get your shiny new ****ty spec acrylic dentures so you can look like Martin Sheen! I mean, dear?, your livin' beyond your means if you find yourself on a medical card! Must go rendezvous with my golf cronies now!!

Bite the hand that doesn't feed you, (making sure that the fixadent you were compelled to resort to adheres well!!).

@ €800 a gnash, I would suggest that there is a bottomless pit of €€€, except that money which the elite are hoarding will only be good for heating that bottomless pit one discourteous one & co.horts may well wind up in....
